Homed
Homing Requirements: Riley needs an "at home or part time working" family, with other animals, who can offer him TLC, catering for his special needs. His poor co-ordination is exaggerated when initiating movements. Riley does settle when left. Riley is a Staffie chatterbox communicating his needs and desires. Housetraining can be maintained with focus, may have accidents initially during settling period.

Video: Riley walking with Colleen
His Story: Riley was found tied to a bracken bush in graveyard, late at night away from public view; he was unclaimed. Riley has had 3 fosterers 1st with kids and cats; 2nd with a rabbit and cats 3rd with Kids, another dog and guinea pigs. Riley is now in permanent foster with 3 other dogs in Tunbridge Wells.
Video: Riley on a walk
Advert: Riley is approx ?8 years young with special physical needs. When stressed in anew environment Riley demostrates extra needs but 3 days in he settles and is much eaiser to manage. He really is detrimentally affected by change. Riley is full of character and walks like he is on a march! He is very social; meeting people, children, dogs, cats and small furries easily and easily managed on an extender lead. Riley can maintain housetraining with conscious focus. He loves children, small furries, happily lives with cats and dogs. Enjoys being passenger next to the driving on trips!
Riley is a small, smart Staffie who is quite intense as he struggles to achieve what comes easily to others. Riley will break into 'Staffie chatter' telling you all about his day or concerns. Riley lives life as a faster pace, to allow him to overcome his inco-ordination problems and may appear restless but is simply keeping on the move. Riley drinks and wees more but is in good health our vet has checked him thoroughly, he just needs access to a garden. Riley happily settles with the family to watch TV or chill out. He needs tender loving care; We have tried so hard to shield Riley from kennels but currently that is where he is.
Riley needs a family: To know him, is to love him and be there for him.

Referral Details Late at night last Sunday an old Staffie boy found meowwing in a graveyard. A Dog owner went in search, thinking that isn't a cat and found him tied into a bramble bush, cut from the brambles and in a deseparate state away from view and the public in an isolated area. He was collected by the dog warden the next morning but she went on a mission to find him a Rescue place.
Hi Dee, Further to our telephone conversation today, saw this email address on the internet and although it goes to Lynne, thought you would pick it up
As I said to you after the "stand-in" dog warden collected the abandoned Staffie I have been thinking about the poor dog all day. He couldn't stop drinking last night and felt very warm, although shaking, and he has got a cough. I thought it was because he had barked himself hoarse when the rotten, stinking owner walked away! The warden guy thought he had kennel cough? He has also got a very bloodshot eye, at the top, left one I think; very long claws; sore marks on his feet; smallish lump on his left side and definitely something wrong with his back legs co-ordination. He was so stressed last night, after I untangled him, and was walking and falling all over the place but today, when I took him round the garden, there is a problem with his rear end and he cant seem to keep both back feet on the ground at the same time, he's like a puppet with one leg going up then the other.
I really hope that you can get him because he just wants SO much attention - not nasty at all. I don't know how anyone could just tie him up in the cemetery, particularly where I found him because it is a very desolate part, not far from the start of the Common and he was tied up tight in the hedgerow. I got in a right old state crawling in and trying to get him out, plus having my GSD on the lead at the same time, just in case he picked on the poor old boy!
I know staffies have got a bad name and not many people would have approached him, which makes it worse. He didn't deserve this at all, especially as he's not a youngster, and it was a cold night too and I wouldn't like to say when he would have been found, if at all. He took a liking to my old gardening shoe and was ripping it about so he's still young at heart and his teeth look quite good, from what I could see anyway.
I took a few photos of him and have sent them to you with this email. I am keeping my fingers crossed that you can help him and would love to hear some good news, or any news, if you have the time.
Nice to talk to you. Best wishes, Christine (Riley's finder)

Riley is now at Gatwick South. I collected him from the vet's yesterday - post lump op - and took him home, then along to GS this morning... and behind that simple statement is a whole saga (see General Chat). He's more lively than I expected and the home situation was a surefire disaster - my fault for having a common sense bypass - so we spent a lot of time walking or huddling in my car. Riley seems very tolerant of mad human behavior.
Here's Riley supervising the AA man as he loaded my car onto a trailer - in East Grinstead High Street - early this morning
Riley isn't quite the frail old chap I imagined. According to the vet he has spondulitis and could have glucosamine to ease his spine. It means he has limited strength in his back legs so needs lifting into a car. On the other hand, his shoulders are strong. We had several visits last night to the local recreation ground and he can walk very briskly on grass. His nails have been clipped but are still rather long so he skates a bit sometimes on hard surfaces. If we got into a muddle walking he flattened out on the ground - so it looks like someone has been less than kind or patient with him.
Riley is also a chatterbox. In the car there was an almost constant stream of "staffy speak" with grunts, whistles and a bit of yodelling. After a short time together he was howling if I left the car for a few minutes.
It would be lovely to see his chap find a foster - if not a forever home - where he can have a quiet life and be a real pet. Because he's so worth it! |

I had the absolute pleasure of meeting this boy this morning. He is scared and shaking in his kennel so I went in and sat down and he came for cuddles. We just sat for a while sharing cuddles. He is so gentle but so needing hugs and TLC. He is struggling to walk on his back legs and I think he is suffering some pain. He was very unsure of going down the kennel run but did so bravely taking no notice of the other dogs and once out in the field he brightened up and did little jumps of joy (as much as he could with his poorly back legs -bless him) I have never seen a dog so chuffed to be out and about. I did shed some tears for the injustice this poor lad has suffered as he is just ADORABLE and I stake a claim to being his biggest fan!
We did a little short walk around the field (I am not sure how far he can walk?) stopping many times for cuddles. When I sat on the stile he snuggled into my lap and I think he would have just stayed like that forever if he could. I did get his little tail wagging. So it was with a very heavy heart that I returned him to his kennel. |

So here is Teeny Tiny Riley. He really is so small and very cute. He was obviously feeling very full of himself today and enjoyed our walk around the field. He is quite sprightly quite able to walk, even though his back legs do look strange. The video shows him walking - excuse my voice (I don't think it's me ) He did not want treats or sausages, just wanted a bit of love and cuddles - which he got. He happily went back into his kennel and is looking forward to seeing someone else very soon. Love this Boy and yes Helen I gave him a hug from you too.

| I had the pleasure of walking Riley today, we slipped out the back way and met the big groups coming back. Riley is full of energy and enthusiasm, his back legs don't always work properly but it's hard to imagne anything getting in the way of him enjoying life. What he'd really like is a forever home for Christmas failing that a foster home would be warmly welcomed. |

So glad he's such a hit with the GS walkers ...

After twelve hours with Riley - most of them awake - I agree totally with Chinquest. I found he walked well on an extender on mown grass. Walking close too he seems to have a wariness about people tripping over him ... but help him onto a car seat and he'll cuddle for England!
Just a reminder ... the vet says it's his spine that's stiffening a bit and glucosamine (as sold for humans) could help ease the joints. |

| Peter, we are giving him short walks (and lots of cuddles) did the vet say whether his exercise should be limited? |

No comment about the amount of execise - but admit I didn't ask - they just suggested Riley travel in the crate to avoid jarring his spine.
The state of his claws in the first pictures suggests he hasn't been out much lately so he might need to build up the the amount of walking he can do for that reason. When his claws can be trimmed a bit more he may be better on hard surfaces and more confident on steps. But, again, there may be another reason - like his eyesight - which is also age related.
Have you seen the sudden flattening to the ground when he thinks someone is was going to trip over him? On the other hand he doesn't seem to shy away from the prospect of a walk.
The GS walkers are with you so - Go Riley, Go! |

| Riley walked with Chinquest today and seemed very taken with Smiler. He was much more relaxed and managed to get round the whole walk although was a bit tired at the end. We will build up his stamina slowly. He is just such a fantastic little character. |

Hi there - I am the lady who found and untangled Riley in his hour of need and have been reading up on his exploits. He looked like he was used to see cars breaking down - think he must be a true little Croydonian tuffie!
I think the pictures of him in the arms of the nice Staffie walker, are lovely and he just wants some tlc and company. I really don't know how the previous owner could have left him like that - and I am SO grateful that you lovely people at Rescueremedies took him under your wing. Although he was only here for one night, I knew that he had been hit by the way he flattened himself if he thought he'd got in my way.
Poor little boy but now, he's getting more cuddles than I think he's ever had!
I truly hope he get a nice home soon and thank you once again for taking him in. I myself have a rescue boy (GS) and I'm sure he whispered to Riley that everything would be ok for him now .................!
Wishing you ALL a very happy Christmas, especially Riley of course, and hope he gets a really super pressie - like a new home, maybe? |

| We took Riley and Smiler to the pub today for a spot of lunch and some cuddling. Riley is such a happy boy out and about, jumping and skipping along. He is walking better than he was and I think the exercise is doing him good. Spending some time with him and getting to know him better I think the boy has some Collie in him and that is why he has a busy mind and a wriggly body and wants to be on the move all the time. Having not been able to get him interested in taking any food or treats, the prospect of warm sausages in the pub got his nose twitching and he gobbled those down quick enough. He still seems to like to be out with Smiler and he is getting more trusting with us as time goes by. I feel we have made progress with the wonderful little guy and we will start to see more and more of his fun loving character as he settles and relaxes. |
