Clarence has stabilised on his current medication and his vet today found his lungs to be reasonably clear. This has been the case now since early January so we are very pleased. He is eating generally well and we have felt comfortable enough with his condition to take him out for a few short walks recently which he has absolutely loved!
We do have to remember though that he remains a seriously ill dog and that the situation may change rapidly. In the meantime though we are enjoying our time with Clarence and he has been having some lovely snoozes on the bed with us in the mornings (something we had intended never to do but when he comes upstairs in the mornings his lovely little face is impossible to deny!).
We hope you (and Sue) are well.
Best wishes,
Peter, Caroline and Clarence. |

Received Saturday 29th

To keep you up to date - Clarence was at the vets today for a check up. His lungs are still not too bad however he is retaining fluid in his abdomen now which is consistent with the left side of his heart failing now along with the right. To counter this he is now receiving an extra half diuretic a day. The vet also said though that there was a change in the heart's rhythm which also fitted with this degeneration. This has also answered why his energy levels have been dropping off over the last week or two. The retained fluid has also affected his breathing as there is pressure on his diaphragm making things that bit more difficult.
On the positive front he is not suffering and is still enjoying lots of lovely cuddles and snoozes especially in the conservatory when the sun is out. Also he has done very well as the vet admitted today that while Clarence was ill over the New Year he had privately thought he wouldn't survive more than a couple of weeks - so the terrier spirit is still strong in him!
We hope you (and Sue) are well.
Best wishes,
Pete, Caroline and Clarence. |

Clarence is still with us which is great but he has had a bad couple of weeks. A couple of weeks ago his breathing was very poor so we took him to see the vet. He had a temperature of nearly 103, fluid in his lungs and in one side of his chest. It was touch and go for a few days but after some antibiotic injections and extra injected boosts of diuretics he did pick up. However he did not shift the fluid in his chest so we went back to the vets. Another diuretic injection plus his pills have been upped for a week and he does seem improved. The fluid on his chest though is a major issue. If it doesn't shift this week then his outlook is rather bleak. Our vet does not think that draining it is worthwhile as it is likely to refill within a few days. So we are due to take him back Friday morning to see how he has fared.
It's not all down though as we have solved his tummy troubles (for which the carpet will be forever grateful!) and he remains a loveable little character. He is in fact cuddling me on the sofa whilst I'm typing this message.
We hope you and yours are well.
Best wishes,
Pete, Caroline and Clarence. xx |
My response..
Oh thank you both for loving Clarence as you do. I am so grateful to your vet also who seems to be so supportive in giving Clarence the best opportunity to cling to his loving family and fun times despite failing health. Clarence -you are a little soldier and yes you have known true love which many dogs don't get a glimpse of in their even briefer lives but then you are a giver of true love to and deserve the very best.
It is truly one day at a time you are lucky in having a vet who is in this with you having that love for Clarence. Our thoughts are with you all.

Many thanks as ever for your thoughts.
You'll be pleased to know that Clarence had made an improvement when we saw the vet on Friday. He does still have fluid in his chest but the level has gone down. So for now he is happy and enjoying a good bark when we come home!
Best wishes,
Pete, Caroline and Clarence. xx |

Amazingly today is Clarence's first Birthday with us! We have had a party tea and Clarence was allowed to do some begging whilst we ate which he really enjoyed. He also had his own roast chicken and potato dinner with carrot, apple and biscuits which was scoffed down in one. He had his own party hat (picture attached) and he is now enjoying some attention on the sofa.
He is also feeling great today which is such a bonus as his health has deteriorated in the last 2 or 3 weeks. We really do not think he will be with us much longer as his poorly times are becoming too frequent and we do not think it will be fair to allow him to keep enduring his rollercoaster health. But at the moment he is very contented and we are all having a lovely evening together.
We hope you are well and as always we will keep you updated.
Best wishes,
Peter, Caroline and Clarence xx |
Happy Happy Birthday sweetheart Clarence...

Clarence alas came into this world challenged with lack of sight..and having found Pete and Caroline who adored every aspect of you we were to learn your time was limited...
BUT thank you for everything you were and offered..we are enriched by knowing you or knowing of you..sweet love
