Zack Weimaraner x Staffie (Furry Friends)Zack is approx 2 year old Weimaraner Staffie cross looking for a new home.
Zack was surrendered in to a pound by a family who couldn't manage him due to his 'then' high energy. He has been castrated, microchipped and fully vaccinated.
Zack would prefer to be an only pet and although he would need to be walked onlead, he loves people. He loves his cuddles, is quite easy to train and clean in the home.
He is currently being kennelled but would love a mum to call his own.

Zack sweetie - sorry I didn't have time to take you today. Your mouth looked sore from rubbing on the kennel wire and your paws too?
Hope a home comes through soon. If not I will walk Zack next week as a priority.

At last I got to walk Zack again - been looking forward to it. In his kennel he can seem a bit much but get past the initial big bouncy boy image and you find a sweet lad. Early in the walk took a fair amount of control on my part becasue he was so excited to be out and about again. But once he settled it was necessarily a bit stop / start because of all the traffic on the bridleway / private roadway. I pulled him up though and we watched the car go past, an opportunity for a bit of fuss, then off again.
Not for the faint-hearted this one but a real gem none the less.
This is not the best picture of Zack but those cows were trouble - quite intimidating, they all came over but he just kept an eye on them.
Also we passed 20m or so from a couple of German Shepherds on an adjoining path and he was well behaved, we just kept walking.

Now that we have got Zack to the stage that he can greet dogs with no adverse reaction he has been moved to the kennel down next to the prep room. He was instantly calmed and relaxed alot more and loves the fact that he is near is favourite thing ever...people and food!

Walked Zack today and he is becoming more settled in himself in his new position with people around him. He is a big strong boy but we had a lovely jog together in the sunshine. Passed the chickens and the horses without too much interest today. He is loving being near everybody and making the most of any fuss on offer. I wish I had a picture of him sunbathing and relaxing in his kennel.

Zack waited so patiently while I walked the other dogs past his kennel but his turn came. Strong at first but calming, all he wants is to get going. He has minimal reaction to chickens, rabbits, horses, other dogs and today he got up close with a cow - they sniffed noses and the cow almost licked his face! Towards the end he got a bit tired but once near the kennels again he was pulling again to get home. In the sunshine today his stunning blue colour was in full glory. Such a lovely boy just waiting for that right home.

Zack was my last walk today. This boy has stolen my heart. He is such a big lump of puppy dog waiting for someone to train him and teach him how to behave. He has improved so much already with the kennel staff working with him. He is big , he is strong but he would love to be a lap dog! I took him to lunch at the cafe but had to call in help from my husband who was off work today - would he like to meet me (and Zack) for lunch? We both had a thorough licking and big cuddles. No table manners at all so we ate separately. But he did a lovely sit for some scraps at the end. Zack in standard staffie fashion loved everybody! Couldn't understand why people didn't want a nice friendly lick and cuddle. A special home is out there for this boy, often the best homes take the longest to find. Tony was really taken with him too and would have had him home if we didn't have kids and dogs already!

He is a star this dog! He is becoming so responsive now considering that when he first arrived he had obviusly had no training ever.
He has been tested with a four year old and took crisps off of him. No malice, but because he is clumsy would be better suited to older teenage children as a young child would be pushed over like a skittle...just like I am.

Walked Zack again today - tried him with a halti but he got very distressed and clawed at his face to remove it. Tried it a couple of times and he didn't like it but there is not an ounce of malice in this lad and he put up with me trying again. After that we walked with a normal harness and he was fine. Still pays no attention to the chickens and horses.
Had such big Zacky cuddles on the way back - I sat on the wall and he almost sat on my lap. Big hugs and kisses are his speciality. What can I say - he is just gorgeous.

Zack did not have a good day today.
Through a ridiculous mistake made by a new member of staff (now gone I am glad to say) who left the kennel complex gate open, Zack ran into the main kennel block. He sniffed another dog who took offence to this and he latched onto Zack's face. Poor boy has got some bite marks on his nose and face now. No animosity was shown to the other dog, but I must have looked like some wounded soldier when I came out of there being that his blood was all over me. Not a scratch on the other dog.
The wounds looked worse thanks to the blood, but it quickly stopped and after bathing his face gently he settled down quietly to nurse his sore face. Although it is my day off tomorrow I am going to go in and check how he is and if there is any swelling he will be popping along to the vets for a course of antibiotics.
Hugs to my big brave puppy.

Zack is his normal self but a sore looking face.
We went for a walk with a bit of a difference today - over the railway though the station. there was a train on the platform and it pulled out while we were walking along. He thought the stairs were weird - wanted to climb up the sides at the top. But behaved very well. Crosses roads nicely. Walked back a different way and he really chilled out for a while walking nicely with a loose lead.
He was so patient waiting for his turn - his kennel is positioned for full view of goings on which he really appreciates. I took out lots of others for walks but he knows I have a soft spot for him and that I would get to him and that last extra walk I tack on at the end of the day. His puppy dog charm in such a big package is irresistible.

It got later and later today while I showed some new walkers the ropes and Zack watched every time I came through. Time to go home came and went and I still hadn't taken him. Luckily Zack is in a separate section to the main runs and I was able to take him after hours without disrupting all the kennel goings on. Still struggle with his energy when I try and get his harness on, he is just so excited to be going out, but got there in the end. Bit of a hurried walk after all the other long ones of the day. Had a bit of a jog but he got tired of that quite quickly today because of the heat. Not at all sure about bikes zooming by. He just loves the cows - at one point he had his head up to the fence and had his head between 2 cows heads. One he had almost touched noses with. They definitely shared a sniffing encounter. This is all under strict control though because he is a big lad - I had a waist jogging belt and he had a harness attached to it and I was positoned one foot in front of the other braced just in case. You can't be too careful near barbed wire fencing and livestock. With a proper home and proper training it would be a different matter but caution is best with such a powerful boy. Caution but not panic, he is showing good signs all round and with careful handling will be a credit to whoever takes him on. So much potential.

Such a sad and ridiculous situation really. I feel so sad for Zack and for the family as all had bonded together so well.
He was great with the kids (fell asleep with his head on their lap), mum loved to snuggle up with him in the evening and even dad (a non-doggie type person) could not believe how easy going, loving, well behaved, affectionate and clean he was.
He was easily controled on the lead when he went out, well behaved amoungst strangers (but we all knew that already! ) and walked well and with a good pace.
So what on Earth could go wrong??? The neighbours. They did not like such a big dog being walked about and made a complaint to me about it, demanding that I come and get my dog. They were scared that he would knock their children over (even though she admitted that he was perfectly under control).
To save arguements the family agreed to hand him back but it wasn't without a huge amount of upset. All the family were in bits and Zack returned to us and is now depressed and unhappy.
Sometimes you just find that perfect home...so perfect that something just has to go wrong.

Well we walked and walked and walked! Lovely country walk, a little bit of sunshine and good company.
Zack was frightened out of his skin by his reflection in a mirror for cars to see round corners. But he pulled himself together and walked on. He wasn't sure at all about an overgrown path with nettles and thistles which ahd a log fallen across - he looked at me as if to say - are you serious?
We sat down for lunch and at first he wasn't hungry athough polished off his water. When I picked it up and fed him he accepted some food graciously! He has been off his food a bit since he has been back so I'll let him off. Then we could have headed back or carried on along a different path. We took the latter option and after getting completely lost ended up on the bypass! Walked along there until the footpath where we bumped into Liz - Zack gave his usual happy greeting and we headed back.
It was a lovely walk and he had to trust me on a few things which he did. He thoroughly enjoyed pulling me uphill - I had a waist harness usually used for Cani-x. He would love some work to do and has boundless energy. Again he greeted the cows like long lost friends, they love him.
I won't be going to the gym tonight, that was quite enough for one day.

Zack is coming along so well now in so many ways. He had some social walks today and did ever so well. Keen to play and interact with other dogs but not too pushy. Taking it gently with him particularly as most dogs may not take too kindly to an invitation to play with such a big boy. He is still strong on the lead and needs a confident handler but he just has so much love to give and can't understand why the world doesn't want to give the same in return.
He came close to finding his place in the world recently, so let's hope it doesn't take too long before he finds his special person/people.

Well Zack had a lovely day today - he found himself a girlfriend! Mindy nuzzled his ear and they were soon wanting to play and cavort. But they were on lead so their fun was quite limited. Both showed very good signals, play bows and good natured interaction. They shared a water bowl quite happily. Also he got a little too near another girl's water bowl and was very upset when she had a go at him. He even looked like he thought I would punish him which I have never seen in him before (and of course I never have done) . That was quite a shock - Zack is a sensitive soul and needs gentle if firm handling. Zack is big, he is beautiful and he has so much of the world to experience given a guiding hand from an understanding owner. He has matured so much in his time at the kennels and is a joy to be around, if you don't mind being knocked over by his enthusiasm sometimes.
He has learned 'wait' and looks round for fuss so cars can pass us on the bridleway/ road.
His social world is expanding by the day at the moment.
I took him out in the paddock for the first time today and he enjoyed chasing the football when I managed get hold of it to kick or throw it.
Hopefully a few nice photos will be around soon which were taken today.
Everyone with an open mind who meets this boy loves him. If we were in a position to rehome him he would be curled up at my feet now.

I was very impressed with this boy today. His interaction with Mindy was just lovely to watch. Both were very gentle together and Zack is a big soft pup who wouldn't hurt a fly ... he would study it, observe what it did and likely move out of the way for it to pass LOL!

Zack had a great walk today with Bobby. On the walk down he kept trying to sabotage Bobby's training and egg him on to play! At the cafe he let Bobby nibble his ears and generally nibble him even letting him lick in his mouth. Tolerant with Bobby getting overexcited and putting his paws on him. He welcomed this just like he had been offered a nice head massage. These 2 boys have hit it off but hope to try him with some others another time too.
Zack likes a bit of a welcome cuddle/ squash before he gets his harness on in the kennel and his enthusiasm in greeting can be a little overwhelming but always good natured but once out and about he settles nicely. He does still pull at first and needs a strong handler - if the weather were a lot cooler he would love to be jogging. He gets thirsty and really needs a drink whilst out walking in the heat.

Zack is currently staying in our kennel in the garden due to space pressure at the kennels and the fact that he is my best boy! (no secret there!) The Continuing Adventures of ZackStill safely tucked in his kennel at 8 this morning. Boy can he poop for england but hopefully that will;l change with some Arden Grange. Muffy hadn't got up yet and Millie was at the back door so all there was was play bows either side of the door - chaos. Zack as you know is substantial and Millie maybe slender but makes up for it in height. So after very good on lead interactions we took the plunge and they played! Zack was very good and apologised if he put a foot wrong. Muffy joined in later. After a short time though we cooled it all down - slowly does it. All sat in the field with a cup of tea. Let Zack off again and he could not undrstand why they didn't want to play and said chase me to them many times - eventually they did - one last run then calm down time. The girls went indoors. All very positive so far but far too soon to say if I will be able to let them play freely together.
Zack is a bright boy - I shut the field gate to leave him and he figured out that he could pull it open. When I sat drinking my tea before I came in he was harassing me a bit and I was starting to wonder but he was saying 'follow me'. Had to folow him through the high plants to the gate - he wanted to go indoors. Poor boy - not yet suitable I'm afraid. It was just like Lassie - he kept going and coming back to show me the way I should go.
Zack's new owner is going to have such a loyal, fun dog.

This is wonderful news and proof that you can teach an old dog new tricks.
When Zack first arrived he had been labelled as 'not rehomable' because of his aggression with other dogs.
To be honest he was a nightmare! He chewed the bars to get to another dog and it was a tough climb to get him to this stage.
He is a very intellegent lad and learnt over many months that other dogs were fun and not a threat or to be dominated.
Castration played a part in this but alot of it is down to sheer hard work and perseverance.
Alison and her family and the Croydon dog walkers have also been extremely helpful in this process. Thanks guys!

Zack is having a great time particularly this evening. He had a mad five minutes with our greyhound Millie. He loves chasing and being chased and is much more polite about it than my girls who play nip like a lot of dogs. He runs for the sheer joy of it with a companion. Round and round the tree they went - one way then the other. Only problem is he doesn't want to stop. He is well mannered in the end and stopped pestering her when she firmly told him off. Of course once I had my camera there was no interest at all in playing. Millie is lying exhausted in the hall and Zack has gone back to his kennel for a rest. He likes his kennel as a place of safety and comfort but is not guardy with it. I was about to leap in and intervene but he didn't blink an eye when Millie went in his kennel for a quick look around. The sheer joy on his face when he was running round was something to see. Whilst I let the two of them have play time I don't let my other girl Muffy who is more bolshie because it is very early days for Zack and playtime and slow and careful is best with any dog who hasn't learned to play as a pup. And of course he may be very different with male dogs and I wouldn't take any silly risks. Millie is a completely non dominant playful bitch and has always got on with everybody.
Also had to curb some of his excitement as he is starting to test his boundaries with me! He is still a teenager after all.

Zack continues to charm us. He is now getting upset about his exclusion from the house and lets us know very vocally! But our lurcher bitch is not ready for another dog indoors just yet. He is happy in his kennel though and prefers being shut in to having the full run of the field. Outside he is having great fun with my greyhound - they charge around together. She can't understand why he runs so slowly and he can't understand why she tires so quickly - different body types. He hasn't quite figured out that he can't fit under her!
I just love this boy - he is so happy go lucky.
Alison

Zack had some time with us in the house yesterday. Set up the crate so we can give him time out when he is too much for our lurcher girl. After some mad moments he did settle and eventually spent the evening with us after our lurcher went to bed in . But at bed time he happily went down to his kennel for the night. If it weren't for our girl Muffin he could spend most of his time with us - it isn't any problem with him that means he isn't with us.
But of course he is getting lots more one to one than in kennels and daily walks.
He was convinced that there was someone at the door and barked to tell us but it was only on the tv! He was a little confused by that. So long as he knows his boundaries he is a joy to have around. He can't quite believe our no dogs on the furniture rule which was something we had to introduce when our kids were small for safety reasons.
I will take him for a very long walk today and hopefully he can spend some more time chilling with us this afternoon.

Zack went for his first 'pack walk' today with me holding him, Muffy and Millie. All successful - he was far too intent on his walk to really worry. A good step forward though. Still using time out in the crate for hi when he is indoors with us - just gets too excited at times. He likes his crate though so isn't a problem. He loves the whole family.

Zack is continuing to settle well when he is in the house which isn't really surprising because he has been fine previously in a house. Had a walk then a mad run around with Millie, chewed a bone. Then I was going out so I put him in his indoor crate and according to my mum he slept most of the time I was gone. He is lying resting at the moment near my chair and is much more relaxed all round. He was good with my mum who was scared of him and was gentle but once jumped up which was a worry for her, him being such a strong boy. Once he gets into his forever home he will settle beautifully I'm sure. He is even adapting to the pace of life in a greyhound household.
He is a bright loving boy who has so much to offer.

Well, Saturday morning - what better time to take your life in your hands and go dog scootering! I had previously taken my greyhound and lurcher and they were not going to pull at all. Zack however was brilliant. First bit was pavement and he was just getting the idea that he could trot along a bit faster. Planned left turn unmade road already had a dog walking along so turned right. Unmade road too, following rain and lots of mush on the surface. Well I am a bit of a wuss when it comes to going downhill fast (took a long time with skiing) but it was quite scary. Fun but scary. Definite adrenaline rush stuff and if I had on any safety gear at all I would have let him go more on the downhill but brakes on all the way and foot ready to hit the ground. Uphill and flat he could pull although on the return trip with the steep hill I had to work very hard scooting myself - he is a dog not an elephant!
I bought this scooter to use on the paved bridleway roadway near the kennels and definitely not offroad but why not.
To Zack's new owner - well worth considering
Zack was too tired to pull much at the end but as soon as we got indoors he found the energy to play manically with my greyhound so he is resting in his crate now.

My boy has left and I can hardly believe that I won't see him again!
Hi Ladies,
Your boy has landed safe and sound in Guernsey. He has spent a fair bit of the time in the car today while we were driving or on the ferry home. Not once did he complain at all, we had a bit of staffie chat on the way down to Poole !! not sure what he was trying to say but he seemed happy enough :-)
Once we were on the ferry we made sure he was comfortable, had water and toys & fan was running to keep him cool. I managed to tear myself away from him and go up to the seating area, not a peep out of him. Considering the busy day he has had i am absolutely amazed with Zack. I can honestly say he is one of the most well adjusted friendly dogs i have ever had the pleasure to meet.
Alison, Emma & everyone who has had a hand in Zack's training, you are all stars and should all be very proud of yourselves. I think i am a very fortunate man to have him in my home. Thank you all.
We have been for a walk around the cliff paths this evening, Zack is currently alternating between eating, drinking and giving his toy monkey what for, Alison he is doing to the monkey what he was doing to your cushions, the monkey is coming a very poor second LOL.
I have attached a couple of photo's. Sorry about the grainy one it was getting dark.

Hi Emma,
We had a few barks last night and early this morning. I'm sure it's just down to Zack's new surroundings. There is a fair bit more traffic, pedestrians & horses passing by round here than at Alisons house, and he did have a very busy day yesterday !! We have sat outside in the yard for an hour or so this morning, he looks to see what is passing by but does not bark at all. Once he settles i am sure he will be fine.
It was a trip to the beach on this mornings schedule. We walked all around the headland and then bit the bullet & hit the beach, i should have worn shorts !!! One very wet me and a very excited Zack later we headed back to the car. I think it is safe to say he enjoyed it, i tried to get a photo but he was moving too fast to get a clear one.
I have signed up on the RR forum, once i work out how to post & upload photo's i will be making regular updates.
We are off for a walk with Elsie the Mastiff this evening, will try to add a post tonight.
Off to clean up my bomb site of a lounge now ! LOL.

Had a walk around the common and an old fort this morning, still pulling on the lead but gradually improving.
We went and bought a crate this afternoon as i have been let down badly by an ebay shop that should have delivered one two weeks ago. The pet shop did not have the size i wanted so Zack has ended up with one big enough for a great dane, i'm sure he will have plenty of room
We did the cliff path walk again this evening & met a couple visiting from England, they both took the time to say hello to Zack and pat him for a while, he was very well behaved with them.

He was dwarfed in our greyhound crate so a great dane one should be funny- pictures please

The next size down they had in stock was for a beagle sized dog.
I didn't want to leave him any longer without a crate, so we went large

Zack is getting two fairly long walks a day. Yesterday morning was the first time he actually laid down as soon as we got back home, we were out for just over two hours. During our walk we went to the parish constables office to get Zack's licence ( every dog over six months must have one) all three people in the office came out to see him and wanted to know his life story. After 10 minutes petting and ahh's they let us go
If the two of us are out alone the lead pulling is getting much better. If he is with his partner in crime Elsie he tends to pull a fair bit, just excited i think. I have noticed Zack is not overly keen on smaller dogs, no barking just the occasional small growl. Some of this may be due to me having a tight grip on his lead though. He wants to see everything and everyone & does not realise that they might not want to say hello to him sometimes, he is a big boy and dwarfs some smaller dogs.
We are trying a few short spells in his crate. I am trying to get him used to not being right next to me all the time, back to work next week

We went to Jerbourg point this morning. It was a bit windy as you may be able to tell by the ears!!
I promised Sharon some bandana photo's & have been a bit lapse.
As orange is her colour of choice i have uploaded 3 to try and get in her good books

We have met a few dogs and a wild rabbit over the last two days. Zack tends to want to pull over and say hello to them.If we are sat he will stay there with taught lead and tail going ten to the dozen. My landlord popped in today with his dog, Zack was in his crate & they were nose to nose with wagging tails. He was a bit put out that i would not let him out to play, but Molly is about a tenth of his size and it was only their first meeting.
I think he is missing his playmate
When we were on the cliff paths last night a young wild rabbit wandered out in front of us. Zack did not make a sound, he just stood there with his tail going fast enough for take off !! By the look of the rabbits puffy eyes i think it may have been in the first stages of myxymatosis, it did not seem aware that we were there at all, so we just waited a couple of minutes until it wandered off back in to the hedge.
I left Zack alone in his crate while i popped to the shop this morning. Although he was pleased to see me when i got back he was not over excited. Will try longer tomorrow.

We went to a bigger beach with a longer lead, result....one very wet Zack & one very dry me.
The step children came to visit Saturday, as you can see Zack was pretty relaxed about it all.

Zack has pretty much made himself at home now. His walking to heel is coming along very well, my arm is very happy about that
We are going out for a walk with Elsie's house mate Louie this afternoon to try and keep up his social skills and improve them a bit too.
Zack came to visit my mum's house this morning, all went pretty well. Bess the 10 year old cat was not over impressed but did not run away, she is used to over eager staffies. Zack behaved very well and was just taught on the lead with a very waggy tail and no noise at all.

Well this evenings walk turned up something unexpected
After meeting up with Elsie again and a very good introduction to Louie we set off on our walk.
Half way through the walk we bumped into two friends of ours who run a dog sitting business. Zack ended up in the middle of a pack of seven dogs of various breeds and sizes, he did really well with all of them.
Back to work tomorrow, my step son is going to be at the house in the afternoons to keep Zack company.

You are too kind i am only putting the finishing touches to all the work everyone else has done already
First day back to work today, Zack spent the morning at home by himself and the afternoon with Ben for company. When we arrived lunch time Zack had made himself at home in my bed at some point, beyond that nothing out of place. The boy done good

Zack had a good long walk along the green lanes and cliff paths today, we met a couple of labs off leash. As the owner passed he asked if Zack was friendly, i said yes just a bit lively. He smiled and carried on leaving his well behaved dogs to say hello, if only more people were like that
Molly came to see Zack in the garden today, all went well apart from her telling him off a couple of times not bad for a little bichon friese.

I was back to work this week, Zack has been alone in the mornings. My neighbour said he has not heard him at all apart from his squeaky toy. This is the neighbour who has Zack sticking his head in his lounge window to say hello every time it is open, a very understanding man
My step children have been coming home with me at lunch times and staying the afternoon with Zack. He has been pretty well behaved and had them crying with laughter when he howls like a wolf at his squeaky toy.We are off out for a walk with Elsie and Louie again tomorrow afternoon.
