Winnie Staffie DOB 09.08 Gatwick (S) W Sussex Kennelled

Her Story: Found stray in season. Was reactive to dogs, but has settled now post season and spaying. Now settling in kennels.

Salient points: Slender framed Staffie with heaps of charm. Was very distressed in kennels, beginning to settle. Winnie needs a supportive home who have time i.e. most part time working. An only pet home but meets dogs nicely outside.

Advert: Winnie was found stray at a young age in season. She has since settled, has been spayed and is receiving support in what are challenging times for her. We think she is around 1 yr old. She is very loving and will be the dog her new owners make her ... but she needs love, time and patience for her to settle in a caring setting.   Oh what a wonderful project ... to offer Winnie the dedication she needs; she has already come such a distance. She walk parellel to our other dogs and settles and soon builds trust. Winnie however is best being an only dog to ensure her homing is successful and isn't an off lead dog, there is more work to do before that.

So many people are coming forwards to offer a Staffie their heart. Staffies are having a particularly challenging time and as sensitive souls it isn't easy for them. Winnie is such a dog who has been dumped and is confused, but her instincts are to trust, to love and to learn from confident hands. She is young and she will settle.  She will bring her energies into focus and achieve skills. She is ready to be given that opportunity. She has learned to settle in kennels, but kennels can't offer that next step. We will support Winnie, she will win through! She is a winner ... just needs the opportunity ... her luck is on the change!

Please visit Winnie's individual thread, in Dogs needing homes in our care on our forum to find out more about hem and follow her progress.

If you are interested in re-homing please complete our homing questionnaire so we can ensure our dogs are matched and will suit your circumstances/lifestyle.

"Please note that this dog is currently in kennels and is also available for foster until a 'forever' home is found".

Winnie's thread below:

Dog wardens appraisal of Winnie..we take on the 2nd June and we are putting her straight in for spay.

Quote:
Hi Lynne
This is Winnie. She is an unclaimed stray of approximately 2 years old, brindle with a white chest. Winnie is a very busy dog, a bit hyper and doesn’t seem to have had much training at all. She is friendly but does bark a lot and bounce. She finished her season one week ago and has been calmer and quieter since then which suggests to me she would be far better after being spayed (as can most) She has been nose to nose with another dog we have, since her season and was fine with her. I don’t know any more about how she would be with other dogs though as our kennel situation is boarding kennels and we don’t have the facility to do proper assessments.

I have booked her in my diary for Tuesday June 2nd to be spayed and to arrive before 10am.

OMG!  Shocked

She is just like Murphy and Bella!   Laughing

What with the quads (Buster, Cassie, Bobby and Deakon) and now these three...

Emma (who comes from land of Staffie central!)  Laughing

Winnie came to us today.  She was very vocal in the vets initially and you do get the sense she is out of kilter in strange surroundings. She was spayed and chipped. Winnie was very resistant to going in the car and especially the crate. Poor love what is she to make of all this.  She is a lively girl who needs some stability and people around her that care and acknowledge her and bring her through.  Firm boundaries so she hears and acknowledges what is expected of her.. like STAY! Currently demanding and needs a tighter collar as she has quite a narrow head and she uses it to effect..nearly slipped her collar with me in her resistance to the car.  Shocked  close one! Poor love sweet dreams, tomorrow will be a far better and brighter day.

Frankly I can't see any staffie in this one!

No..take a closer look..DNA negative on staffie don't you think!

Now lets look at her beauty from another angle

Winnie is winning through! I was surprised how much calmer she was today ... Emma 'let her get on with it' treatment for Separation Anxiety has allowed it to work its course.  She has hurt her paws and is ginger on her feet.  Loved to walk on the grass and to lie on it. All helped in getting her settled for the photo shoot. Growing close to this Babe.

Walked Winnie today.  I  had fun getting her on a harness but thought it best if she is such an escapologist from a collar. She was very reluctant to have anything passed over her head but this will improve with time. Eventually got her ready to go and despite pulling a fair bit she wasn't too bouncy at all when we got going.  She wasn't possible to distract with treats or maybe they just weren't nice enough to attract her.
Like most staffies she wanted to make friends with everyone at the cafe.
Waited nicely while I got my tea though.  Tired a little on the way back but when she noticed she slowed down then she started up again.

We met Amy down at the kennels today walking Winnie - not met her before and she is a little cracker, very cute.  Here are a few shots of them after their walk.

Winnie

Met Winnie for the 1st time today, in the kennel she was very interested in the dog next door! It was quite easy to get the halti on her, so improving there.
She wasn't keen on the halti to start with, but soon calmed down, she was very good on the walk, no pulling and happy to walk alongside me. The workmen made a fuss of her, and at the turnround point had fun rolling over in the grass and then in her water bowl Rolling Eyes
She doesn't do sit very well, and can't be bribed with treats as she doesn't seemed interested in them, she does like a fuss though, lovely girl!

Winnie...what a star.  Amy was out walking Winnie this morning and I joined them with our mate Marli.  Winnie was marvelous and walked so nicely wanting to get close to him and as WE got our confidence and developed trust in the relationship all was revealed she wanted to give him little licks. They enjoyed walking along together and you could see Winnie rejoicing in the company of a fellow 'staffordonion'

Very Happy

Took Winnie out last Saturday.  She was excited to be out and pulled a lot at first.  After that she settled down and walked nicely.

Winnie

I took Winnie out 1st this morning, I put the halti on her with no dramas, she still isn't keen on the halti but walks along beautifully beside you.
At the halfway point after I made a fuss of her, I decided to give her a reprieve and replaced the halti with a harness, this seemed to encourage her to pull a little bit, nothing major but a difference between halti Winnie and harness Winnie definately. Confused
She still ignores 'sit' command although she can do it if she wants to....

Here she is enjoying a walk with Ernie and Bobby...Tail end hence panting..oh we do put our dogs through their paces!

Winnie was certainly a bit tired after our walk last weekend.  She is so keen and pulls on the harness, even when she was getting tired.  Interesting to hear she is better on a halti so I will try that next time.  She doesn't respond to 'sit' but will stop and stay instead.

Winnie walked with Ernie last night.  They did very well but there came a point where Ernie wanted to play and Winnie told him No!  She had to, but he then thought 'damn it I WANT to play.. Winnie was walking backwards and trying to retreat from his advances. I have never seen a dog repeatedly walk backwards before.  She did very well and could do with joint walks with a more laidback partner like 'Mother Tiger Lily' who will really put her at ease.

Winnie joined us for lunch today. She put on that staffie face of I don't know where I am going but let's get going now - come on, come on.  She may be small but she is determined and quite strong.  She would love a good long walk. She was reasonably well behaved at the cafe but of course had to have hugs and kisses when we sat down.  A sweet little girl who has lost her bark at the moment through too much shouting in the kennels.  Needs lots more chances to catch up on her social skills.

Winnie walked nicely with Missie today. At first she was a bit keen for Missie but by the time they were heading back, Missie was encouraging her. It was so nice to see them interacting calmly and a little unexpected as both can be choosy about their friends! Lots more socializing will be great for Winnie.

Had a long walk with Winnie this morning.  After a lot of cuddles in the kennel, she let me put the halti on without too much trouble.  What a difference - hardly any pulling at all - last time I had her on just a harness and she was pulling nearly all the time. She was so good today - interested in her surroundings, and very interested in the cows but kept her distance.  We stopped for a rest and some water half way and as soon as I sat down, she crept onto my lap for some more cuddles!  On the way back, we met another dog and there was a lot of barking and excitement so I think she would definitely benefit from some more socialising,  Unfortunately I was on my own today so couldn't walk her alongside one of the others.  She so deserves a nice home as she has a lot of love to give.  Fingers remain crossed for her
ali12345

Walked Winnie today with new walker Karen, and she was a bit strong on the lead - must remember halti next time. She was polite to Missie but got a bit worried by her barking at her. She hid behind Karen at one point.  She really needs lots more good dog experiences. But she did get lots of cuddles today and enjoyed her time out.

Winnie

I took Winnie out today for a shorter walk, it seemed like she hadn't been out for a while as she was overly eager in the kennel, it took some while to get her into the harness after struggling to get the halti on proved fruitless.
As before, she is very strong on the harness and pulls a lot, she wants to walk at the same pace all the time, quickly.
She is good around traffic and people and she will now sit after 'several' commands, doesn't seem that interested in drinking just wants to continue the walk.
I'll try and take her out again this week on the halti, and give her a bit more time.
newie244

Winnie

As promised, I got Winnie out again today, this time on the halti. This time it was easy getting it on her, although once out of the kennel and she realised it was on I have to say 'The Lady doth protest too much' Wink
After a while however, she became resigned to the fact it was staying on and she fine, although she kept rubbing her head in the grass (I assume to get Charlies scent off the halti from yesterday).
I sat down with her at the halfway point and we made a big fuss of eachother, although she doesn't want to drink whilst out. All in all a much more relaxed walk today, much calmer.
ali12345

Walked Winnie today as I couldn't help but notice her in the new kennel  block Smile She is always so pleased to see you. Had lots of cuddles at the cafe which she really enjoys. She would love to meet all the people passing - believes everyone could be her friend.  She needs so much more stimulation to keep her mind and body busy. Hopefully now it is quieter at the kennels she will get out a couple of times a week.

Winnie

Winnie really didn't want the halti on today and as she was my last walk having already covered 5 miles with other dogs I gave in and used the harness.
On the walk she was still really eager to walk at her pace again, she loves the grass banks and spends most of the walk trotting along in the longer grass if she can.
At the halfway point we sat down and made a fuss of eachother, although she still doesn't really take on much water.
A pleasant walk in the sunshine with a lovely lady. Very Happy

Winnie

Sue & I took Winnie out this morning, the sun was out and Winnie was pleading to go out so we obliged.
I got the halti on her really quickly today which was a real suprise, on the walk she was pulling in protest against the halti to start with but after a few minutes she gave in and was fine.
On the walk she was perfect, trotting along nicely. At the halfway point we had a fuss but still very little water taken on.
A lovely walk in the autumn sunshine with a lovely girl Very Happy

Winnie

I took Winnie out last today, we had a real battle of wits to get the halti on but I persevered and it paid dividends as she is perfect once out and about on a halti.
She trotted along next to me with no pulling, she decided she would 'wait' but not 'sit' on command today when any traffic approached. She is not the little dynamo you see in the kennels, once away from that enviroment she changes into an adorable little dog who just wants some attention, at the halfway point today she was like a puppy, rolling over, demanding tummy rubs.
A lovely way to end the end the day Very Happy

Winnie

I took Winnie out yesterday as she was demanding to go out, she was a little suprised to see Levi waiting for her outside.
Initially she jumped up at Levi, but not in an aggressive manner, more playful. After a couple of minutes walking together they were brilliant, bumping into eachother and constantly checking eachother out.
At the halfway point we had a big fussing session, and she actually took water on which was unusual.
The walk back was very good as well, Winnie seemed to find a new boyfriend, she didn't want to leave his side, when we got back to the kennels, Cassie was just going to the Cafe and Alison and Levi went with her, Winnie was most indignant that her 'new fella' went off with another woman and whined a little before trotting back inside. Laughing

Took Winnie out today she is such an active girl Very Happy

Winnie moved home yesterday into Gatwick (S) kennels she was very excited..and as she travelled next to me on Julie's lap I was astonished how beautiful this dog is..

She now has a concrete kennel which will be warmer for the winter with a much bigger kennel area with open hatch at all times. Lets hope she wont be with us for long and will transfer to her families centrally heated house soooon!
ali12345

Winnie is looking a little thin but hopefully she will soon put the weight back on. She does burn so much energy though Laughing She is a little bundle of fun.
She is cheeky and keen on new adventures. As she is nice and small, the fact that she could pull for England without her halti is more comical than a real  concern  Very Happy Next time I will remember the figure of 8 halti and she will walk so much better. Winnie's love of life is infectious - if you need cheering up then she is your girl.

Spinnie Winnie..bless her heart she is sharing a kennel next to Nina and they have been having words..just chitter chatter but got them both worked up...Winnie rushed out of kennels..jet propelled so we ran and when I stopped she stopped when I walked she walked. Happy to be out of the kennel and enjoying a warm autumn afternoon.  Back in the paddock she ran around like bullet. She settled back in her kennel with a huge Jumbo bone.. Laughing

Heather

Wonderful to see little Winnie again today and take her for a new walk in South Gatwick. She's lost weight and looked tiny but has lost none of her energy or love of being out and about and was eager to get going.

Stopping for lunch with Alison and Kai at the pub she made the mistake of jumping up and leaning on Kai's neck, which he didn't like! Then she happily settled down around Tom's legs for lots of cuddles and a few chips earned for such good behaviour.
reclaimingrebus

walked winnie and phoebe together. It all went very well, though Winnie does need a little encouragement - she's just a little unsure. She does love a cuddle this little one. Will do some more walking of them together, as Alison and I feel this would be good for both of them.
