Tia Mastiff 6 yrs Stafford Staffordshire

Her story: Tia was found wandering in a park supposedly, but when a rescue went to the home, the 'finders' were recognised as a local breeder of Mastiffs so concluded Tia had come to the end of her economic usefulness!

Salient points: Tia  hasn't had a life devoted to her needs; when found she had A 'false pregnancy' with milk and overweight due to lack of exercise(Sept). Proven with children. Good with most dogs, but needs confident handler. Could live with dog friendly cats. Tia has an irregular heart beat which is fine and doesn't require medication but the stress in kennels has caused this to affect her health. Her home should not involve obligatory stairs. She so needs her home or a foster home.

Advert: Tia Maria is the sweetest dog. She is placid and welcoming to all approaches. She is middle aged. We’re loving having her with us and moved her kennels to enable her to have regular walks and cuddles whilst she sits out her 'Rescue' phase and moves through into her 'much loved Pet' phase. She is the most undemanding dog, requiring a couple of short walks and a garden to mooch around in. What she needs more than anything is a quiet life and companionship. Since been spayed and had warts removed.

Tia has captured our hearts and the heart of the rescue who took her in (ARC) and sponsors her care and kenneling. We are finding her forever home. We are sure that won't be long. She is "a gentle dog" in so many areas. She can be occasionally picky meeting dogs outside.  This was her only fault when briefly homed with a young, dog inexperienced family. It meant that she was not easy to manage walking with a pram but passed in every other way. Tia is so lovely and proved herself over and over again in so many areas. Although she hasn't grasped it yet, she is on her way to gaining a life of fun and enjoyment. When she finds her forever home there will be huge celebrations all round.

Please visit Tia's individual thread, in Dogs needing homes in our care on this forum to find out more about her and follow her progress.

If you are interested in re-homing please complete our homing questionnaire so we can ensure our dogs are matched and will suit your circumstances/lifestyle.

Tia's thread below:

Tia is an ex-breeding dog whose owners tried to off load as a stray.  Donna-ARC will detail her story and update her thread.  Here are a few pictures... Laughing She has such a lovely vibration and yes that little tongue pokes out most of the time adding to her gentleness.

donna-arc

As Lynne says, same old story, earn thousands of pounds out of a dog and get rid of her when she can't produce for you any more. Unfortunately for the owners they were known to us as being breeders and weren't too happy when we confronted them with the news - quite abusive - but what the hell, she's safe now.

Now, what can I say about our girl? Beautiful, gentle, forgiving....I could go on.
She is fat and has milk so was scanned yesterday - such a good girl, didn't need sedating as she just lay there for us. No puppies in there so she will be spayed today. She also has a large wart and a couple of lumps to remove.
She is staying at the surgery as we don't have any fosterers available (once again we thank our lucky stars for having such a fabulous vet who will allow this). Not a peep from her, quiet as a mouse.
She greets other dogs with a gentle wag and walks past the cat kennels without a second glance. All people are greeting in the same friendly, calm, polite manner.
Hopefully people will see past her size and offer her that special home that she so deserves.
Oh the way she looks at you, it breaks my heart.

Tia is much better out of there anyway. Just fell sorry for the next brood bitch they buy. Sad

Beautiful beautiful girl who has done loads for others and needs a little done for her now. There is a lovely home out there for a gentle gorgeous girl who so deserves it.
donna-arc

All went well with Tia's spay yesterday, she also had a variety of lumps and bumps removed - it took over two and half hours.
She's also been chipped, flea'd and wormed.

Best news of all though - she's found a foster place!
Shani came to visit her with her shepherd cross plus a friend and her 7 month Staffie cross, plus two teenage relatives - so it was a big test. Sensible though as they are all frequent visitors to Shani's house.

Needless to say Tia took it all in her calm stride and luckily the other dogs liked her too. We have tested her again in the cat kennel room - she was aware they were there but completely ignored them. She also ignored the vets own cats when they were in the garden with her.
She is a star!
So off she's gone, with me saying over and over 'take things carefully and slowly, don't trust anyone till you are 100% sure...' but I do have a good feeling x
Dee

Aw Donna we are keeping every thing crossed too. She is such a gorgeous girl   Laughing

Wonderful news for her to be able to sit out her wait for her forever home in a foster home.  Keeping everything crossed.  Very Happy

Spoke to Shani this morning - Tia is no longer looking for her forever home as she's found it - with Shani!
Oh, that it was always this easy x

Positively ecstatic - what a wonderful lucky break for her.  May the good times begin.  Very Happy

Tia has come into our kennels today. She needs a more experienced dog owner as it has become obvious that she hasn't been formally walked and needs real input in getting her accustomed to walking on the lead. She went to the 'beauty palour' yesterday so she must be looking a million dollars Cool

ARC are standing behind her and paying for her kennelling...so lovely when we all work together in the best interest of our dogs Very Happy

Look forward to meeting her Very Happy

Tia

I met Tia this morning and took her out for a very short walk due to her size/fitness levels. She was very calm in the kennel, I didn't bother with a harness we just went with a collar and lead.
She was very gentle on the walk, just plods along, she was very interested in her surroundings, on the few occassions she got the lead taut you could feel she is a strong dog, but she didn't pull at all, I just spoke gently to her and she plodded alongside me again.
A very sad story, but a lovely matron/nanny of a dog, she deserves a lot of love from a forever home.
Mycavyangels

Took Tia for a short walk today, she is such a lovely girl and soo gentle Smile

Tia met Spice's mum and dad today. I collected her from the Croydon kennels and took her with me on our homecheck. They then kindly took her to Farnham kennels for us as Karen has selected her as the 'little girl' Laughing she'd like to put time into.
madmaggie

Hi I,m new. I also had the pleasure of rehoming Spice today but thats another story. I "transported" if thats the word, Tia for a distance of 80 miles today after she had visited my house and garden. I had never met this breed before but she was amazing, so gentle and placid. My grown up daughter wanted to keep her but my heart was set on Spice, if not who knows........I hope she finds someone to give her the love she deserves Smile
karen

love4 I only met Tia briefly today as I settled her in. She took everything in her stride, even as we had to run around and try and find a larger bed for her ( Rolling Eyes ). She happily mouched around the paddock while we cobbled something together.

I am really looking forward to getting to know her better Laughing
josta

Wish my house was big enough for two mastiffs because I'm in love love4  love4 !!!
karen

Tia has found her feet at Farnham, and won many admirers. She is going to move kennel later today. She will be up in the top paddock, next to Stanley. The runs are slightly larger and it is slightly quieter. Dilly and I also discussed constructing a better bed for her so she can be comfortable. Her fitness level is a bit of a concern. Our walks so far have been very short as she starts panting quite early on Crying or Very sad

Ideally she needs 3 - 4 very short walks a day while she builds up her fitness levels. As this isn't possible, she is going to be let out in the paddock to mouch around at every opportunity - ie whenever another dog isn't out.

Such a darling girl, so very gentle and responsive Laughing
karen

Tia had a short walk with Janet yesterday. She was feeling the heat so Janet took her out later in the afternoon. She does look forward to her outings, lovely wagging tail and ready to go - she will even trot off down to the kitchen Shocked

This morning she was out earlier, before it got hot and she thoroughly enjoyed herself. We bumped into a pack of labs and a GSD. She seemed pleased to see them but the GSD was on a lead and barked at her. I have never seen a dog look another dog with such disdain Rolling Eyes

As usual, she was happy to get back and settle down with a chew. Her coat is in excellant condition and the wounds from the lumps she had removed have healed up well.
karen

When I arrived to take Tia out this morning she wasn't quite ready - she didn't want to get off her bed or leave her chew so I got the look of 'Sorry not ready to receive visitors yet Rolling Eyes As she had just come in from her time in the paddock I left her and took Stanley instead. When we got back she trotted to the gate and let me know she was ready to go Rolling Eyes

She is very happy to leave and breaks into a trot but still tires quite quickly and as the walk goes on she gets slower and slower. However, she is such a happy girl and doesn't just wag her tail, but her whole back end Laughing She really does deserve the very best Laughing
xxlynne

Well Tia took me for a walk today in fact a trot. She wasn't quite 'bat out of hell' but she was keen and apart from the occassional backward glance ..enjoy her walk she did. I thought I'd take her for a shorter walk but she passed my 'stopping point' with no signs of stopping so then worrying about whether she would find it difficult to return I gave her a further 10 minutes but still unsure whether it should have been 10 miles!

Everyboby loves Tia  She is a heart melter.
karen

Laughing Tia is such a wonderful girl. Sam took Tia today and I took Stanley and they both shared a lovely walk together, each content to concentrate on the surroundings. She is walking really well on the lead, just occassionally weaving a little but otherwise perfectly Laughing

Her fitness levels are improving, although she still finds the hills a struggle - she reminds me of those articulated lorries that get slower and slower, then once they reach the top, they are off again Wink

Both Sam and I agreed that she really is just a wonderful, gentle dog. She walks nicely, loves fuss and just needs a large warm rug to lie out on, in her home, with a chew Laughing
Janet

I walked Tia today, first of all with Stanley and then on her own. It looks to me as though she's lost a bit of weight and she can definitely walk a lot further now than when I walked her last week. She starts off at a trot and today she slowed down after about 15 minutes. She's so soft and gentle and I got a couple of very wet kisses today. Her tail never stops wagging. She sat very nicely for her treats and took them very gently from me  Smile She's gorgeous.
karen

Laughing Tia's exercise routine was coming along a treat. She has got to the stage where she was almost cantering down to the kitchen and the way out Shocked As her fitness levels improve, I could almost swear her tail wagging is getting more vigourous too Laughing

Today we were confined to barracks and I spent some time with her in her run. She is such fantastic company Laughing
Janet

Tia is a big sweetie. She's lost a bit more weight, and can walk a lot further now. She always starts off at a trot, and after about 5 minutes, slows down to a good steady pace. She seems to walk with a purpose and nothing much distracts her. Today we walked for about an hour in the woods and negotiated a few gentle hills and she didn't struggle at all. In fact, I think she could have carried on for a bit longer. We walked her with Stanley and they came nose to nose a couple of times and neither batted an eyelid. When I left her she was flat out on her bed eating a chew. Lovely girl.
karen

Darling Tia had a bit of a cough earlier in week so it has not been the best time for her. However, she is now recovered and rearing to go Laughing

You always get such a lovely greeting from her and today was no exception. Sadly she wags her back end and tail with such enthusiasm, she has hit the end of her tail on the kennel wall broken the skin Rolling Eyes She did it for the first time on Friday but keeps openning it up again. It is clean and not infected so we just have to work out a way to stop her hitting it. Poor love.

She just needs a home to call her own Exclamation
Janet

Tia was on great form today. She really looks forward to going out and today was no exception. Even though we only had a short walk, she was so happy to be out and about. We met a dog walker with his little terrier and she greeted them with great enthusiasm. Today she jumped up for a treat - something she hasn't done before for me. Hopefully we can have some longer walks soon.
karen

Laughing If you want to feel loved and appreciated, you need to go and see Tia Laughing She reminds me of my Grandmother, who used to rearrange the photos on her dresser depending on which of her children were in the country at the time - in truth, Tia loves everybody, but especially the person right in front of her at the time Wink

Her ellbows are looking a little worn out but she does love having a little sunbathe on the concreate. Once she has found the little patch of grass to call her own, a little cream will sort it out.

She is getting her front feet a couple of inches off the ground when expressing her sheer delight at seeing you, but its not quite jumping up - thank goodness Wink
karen

Laughing Oh we got a lovely greeting again today -

So full of joy and so much love to give - oh, the way she cuddles into your legs Laughing
karen

Laughing Tia has been such good company this week. On Tuesday she went out with Jojo and decided very quickly that he was too much for her. A little grumble and a filthy look and she was content to leave it at that. She might have overdone it on Tuesday as her walk followed on from her paddock outing. She struggled a bit and was very happy to get back for a lie down.

For the rest of this week she has had slow pace, mouchy walks. I can just see her pottering around in a garden with someone, happy to have company but not demanding constant attention. All in all she is a very undemanding dog, just some company and affection and a little walk.

Gorgeous girl Exclamation
xxlynne

So right Karen.  Tia is crying out for walks and attention..all I could offer her this pm was company of Iris one side and Suzi the other.
karen

Laughing So pleased to see Tia back to her churpy self today - mature, young - Tia doesn't care, she just loves everybody -

I finally got to meet the gorgeous Tia outside of her kennel today!  We went for a gentle wander through the woods, and even though it was me holding the lead, she walked alongside my daughter and kept looking up at her as if to check that all was well....bless her.  As has been said, she is good company, very responsive to you talking to her as you walk along and a joy to be with.
karen

Laughing She has spent her entire life so far for the benefit of others - now is time for someone to give back, but she still won't just take, she will give back as much, with bells on Exclamation
Janet

Tia was our first walk this morning and what a pleasure it was. I swear she was smiling at us all the time we were walking. She was full of beans, able to trot along for longer than usual without getting out of breath, and was generally very happy to be out and about. She loves her treats and I left her chewing happily away at a pigs ear.

Crying or Very sad Poor Tia has had another bout of cough and is now on the road to recovery. I really feel for her, poor love Crying or Very sad Cannot believe that such a wonderful dog is languishing in kennels. She is everything you could wish for in a dog - loyal, loving, not demanding and fills you with the feel good factor Exclamation

Crying or Very sad  Crying or Very sad Darling Tia - a day of high drama today  Crying or Very sad  Crying or Very sad

Tia was found collapsed in her kennel this morning. Luckily the kennel staff acted fast and Amy carried her to her car and sped her to our vets. I diverted straight to the vets on the way back from dropping Tara off. When I arrived things were looking bleak and the vet didn't really expect that she could pull through. After speaking to the vet and liasing with Dee on the phone, I went to sit with her in her crate. She gave me a tail wag and tried to tell me all about it. Slowly as we waited she started to recover the colour in her eys, gums and nails. When the tests results came back, much to everybody's amazement, they were clear.

Something happened to lower her blood pressure to dangerous levels - perhaps a shock of some kind or perhaps poisoning of some kind, like eating a frog. She was thoroughly checked over and her spleen was fine too.

We stayed at vets for some time to check that she wasn't going to relapse again and she even ate a whole bowl of food. On her return to the kennels she was given such a rapturous welcome by everybody as nobody thought they would see her again and everybody who has met her just loves her to bits.

I cannot tell you how hard it was to leave her there tonight Crying or Very sad She is crying out for a home and really needs it now. She is such a wonderful dog and many tears were shed for her today - nobody wanted to lose her Crying or Very sad

She is going back to vets again on Tuesday for a follow up.

I can't put into words what it was like today

Laughing I have just got back from seeing Tia and she seemed very chirpy today  Laughing

She just had a little gentle stroll around the block and a pigs ear when we got back.

I don't know what to make of it all Confused
Jilly Allen

As always well done team for looking after this little one and helping her pull through. It is very strange what went wrong with her  but at least she seems brighter now.

That must be one very strong young lady to get her in a car on her own - amazing women we have !!!
karen

Amy did very well - super human strenght when you need it Exclamation

Tia hadn't eaten all her breakfast this morning Crying or Very sad However, she did perk up on our stroll and as usual seemed very happy to be out. Her tail was constantly wagging. She was trying to 'tell me all about it' today as I kept having to go backwards and forwards passed her kennel. I worry about her and her state of mind and worry that she might decide that she doesn't want to go on Crying or Very sad

She is just so loving and beautiful. She is breaking my heart at the moment.
gemmap

I really wish I could help but i'm not allowed to have another dog in the house (says the housemate) I have been asking around any people that I know would be good fosterers and have posted on facebook just in case, if I find anyone I will let you know, fingers crossed!
josta

This beautiful girl looks like an older version of my boy, I desperately wish I could offer her a foster place. I don't think my small house is big enough for two mastiffs and not sure how she would cope with a young whippersnapper like Cooper.  Sad
karen

I took Tia back to the vet this morning for her follow up appointment. She had another thorough examination and a second and third opinion - she does have an irregular heart beat Crying or Very sad It is not really surprising in a dog of her age, condition and considering the hard life she has lead Crying or Very sad

It could happen again or she could go on to a ripe old age. Sadly what she needs is the exact opposite of what she has at the moment. She needs a quiet, stress free life with a few gentle, short walks each day and someone to love and be loved by her.

The probable cause on Saturday was her hearing my voice in the paddock and getting herself worked up because her bedroom door was still shut. She could hear me but couldn't see me or get my attention. Her heart could have missed too many beats - the excitement of Amy picking her up and carrying her could have been enough to kick start everything again, hence she was able to make such a good recovery without any treatment.

She really needs a home to come up for her and soon Crying or Very sad
ali12345

Poor baby Sad  Let's all hope that home comes sooner rather than later.

Janet

Took Tia out for a gentle stroll with Karen today and we were both very relieved that she seems to have perked up a bit. She really enjoyed all the fuss she was getting.

When we took her back to her kennel, my mum sat in there with her stroking her, grooming her and talking to her for a while. When we left, Tia was chewing on her bone looking a lot happier than the last time we saw her. Hopefully things will improve for her from now on. Fingers crossed.
Janet

Tia was a bit down in the dumps when we arrived today, but Mum cheered her up. It doesn't take much to bring a smile to her face (both my Mum and Tia!)

westbrom1

Victoria and I took Tia for a lovely long (but slow!) walk this morning.  She seemed very perky and waggy, which was wonderful to see.  She paid particularly close attention to Victoria, having worked out she was a softer touch than me at giving out treats!!
karen

Laughing Tia was very ready for her walk this morning. She trundled along quite happily, asking for treats intermittently Rolling Eyes

As well as her morning walks, she is also having a short mouch around the kennel grounds in the afternoon. Considering it is only just over a week ago that we thought we had lost her, she is doing amazingly well Laughing I just wish a foster home would come up for her - the weather has turned now and I don't know how she is going to cope with a winter in kennels Crying or Very sad

On our way back today, we had a coat fitting and I was delighted that I have managed to get one that almost fits and will certainly do for the time being Laughing

You can see in this photo and the ones Janet took on Saturday, that her beautiful smiley face has become more serious and worried Crying or Very sad

Update Thursday 12 Nov

A good night for Tia, she is a clean dog.  Slept from 10 pm to 6.30 am when I woke her for the toilet.  During the day she has slept most of the time.  Only one short walk this morning as it rained later, so she has been mooching in the garden in the dry spells.  Loves food and eats too fast so have spilt her meals up into 4.  Tia loves dinners as well! You can see her watching the saucepan.  Her skin on the back of her legs is dry but I am creaming a couple of times a day.  She smiles and has settled very quickly.

Tia thanks Auntie Ros for her goodie bag of tinned food, chicken, biscuits, chews, cream for her skin and cod liver oil! Ros is a very supportive friend to me.

P.S. we don't tell any guests that Tia saves on the washing up by cleaning out the saucepan  Embarassed

Tia was very off this morning. I let her outside, her little back legs stumbling, got her back in and she just dropped in the porch, didn’t want a treat, her breathing was much faster and she panted heavily. After an hour she got on her bed and slept.  Woke up and then ate chicken stew, very tired all day so just let her chill and walk in the garden.  A couple of friends called, Tia is winning hearts! Before she goes to bed she lifts her paw to say, don’t forget my treats, those teddy biscuits taste nice had a nibble myself!  Snore, never ever have I heard a dog snore so loud.
Sorry the photos are not outside but don’t want her in the cold as she will lie on the block paving.  I call the one pose the Tia ‘Linda Lusardi’ pose. I’m not used to all this full frontal nudity  Embarassed

Sunday day of rest

After chatting to Karen about Tia’s health, I had a slight change of tactics to see what Tia was like first thing in the morning. I woke 4.30am, and woke Tia with dirty looks, she went outside and then slept on, so no problems with breathing/panting this morning.  3 short walks today and a woofing session outside.  We have met a couple of spaniels. Tia does pull to say hello and smell.  I shopped to find on my return Ros and Anna having coffee and Tia watching them (Ros has her own key) Tia welcomed her. Perhaps Lynne could add to her advert, 'excellent guard dog'  Laughing

Thursday 26 November

Tia apologies for not updating, Squizz has had Squirrel flu

Tia update
I have settled in as if I have been here all my life.
I have two walks a day, have met other dogs but the dog owners are wary of me.  I have been snapped at by a Jack Russell and a Yorkshire terrier, Squizz protected me. I stride out like a lioness my head held high, confident and fearless!  I chased Muffin the cat in the garden the other morning and it fair worn me out.  Don’t like mornings as I have to get up at 7am for a wee but I am tempted out of my bed by a slice of polony! Nights I have my supper, my favourite dish of the day then bed at 10pm.  It’s tough life but I am managing to keep the 4 meals a day down.  I love my bed, at night I get wrapped up in a warm tumble dried towel and its bliss, my body never moves during the night.  I still sleep a lot in the daytime, Squizz rattles on to me; she doesn’t half talk some tosh!  The back door is always open unless raining so I can potter in and out. I have found my voice a very deep bark.  On Saturday I lost Squizz and mooched the cul de sac, I found her in the garage.

Squizz update
The dog walkers who know me stop to talk, gobsmacked to see me with a Bull Mastiff after years of greyhound/lurcher and collie dogs, some are wary, others want to touch.  Tia is very much a people dog.  Some are shocked to see her undercarriage and one lady got very emotional when I told Tia’s story.  I have a child gate as have stairs; it’s only locked at night or when I am out.  Tia is happy to potter in and out but at night she opens the child gate and waits to be invited in the lounge, so funny to see her.  She loves touch contact from me and has tried to get on my lap on the settee, no way! I sit on the floor with her.  If I stop touching her she will munch my arm gently like a mouth organ.  One descriptive word for Tia is Easy; she is so easy to please and greets me with her smile.  No visitors this week as the flu has kept them away.

Tia’s health
Well I am pleased to say that for 8 days there have been no more long drawn sessions of panting/collapsing outside.  Must be the magic polony!  Poor Tia trembled and shivered after these sessions and her poor body was so cold. We still have little flutters of panting but only minutes.  I have switched the radiator off as my house is very warm and don’t want to overheat her.  I know Tia is not a well dog but I am thrilled that we have had a good week.
