Stanley Lakeland Terrier x 4yrs Gatwick (N) W Sussex Kens

His Story: Stanley was treasured by an older couple but didn’t understand his terrier ways. He spent over 6 months in kennels, homed for 2 months returned we now understand Stanley's needs.

Salient points: Very loving terrier who will offer his belly at the slightest excuse. Needs balance association with both adults from day one as can focus too closely on one; or perfect for a single person's home. Needs terrier experienced home who can reassure and stretch Stanley beyond his 'comfort zone'. Protests on being left for 10 mins then settles.

Advert:  Stanley is a handsome 4 year old Lakeland terrier with beautiful looks and a loving nature.  He loves to sit on your lap or watch you going about your daily tasks. He can become dependent on your presence but after 10 minute protest, is happy to sleep on the sofa waiting your return. Stanley mixes well with dogs once he relaxes, but might have to test them out initially due to his nerves; typical terrier! Everything for Stanley rests around his focused comfort zone. He needs a home where there is the balance of his role as ‘companion pet' i.e. access to sofa, sleeps near bedroom (not kitchen) and living an ordinary relaxed doggie life. If living with more than one adult he needs a constructive programme geared to multiple bonding. Stanley could live with another dog companion but will need to work through his 'only dog' conditioning.  We now know what we are looking for for Stanley. He walks beautifully on the lead until he sees a dog or squirrel then he sparkles, but soon relaxes with confident management.  Stanley has a tight non-moult coat which needs attention every 4-6 months.  Stanley is neutered, chipped and vax'd.

Stanley mixes well with respectful visiting children and visitors in general, excited initially but soon settles. Would benefit from a home that understands his terrier nature and makes allowances so he can enjoy his nature also! Stanley is a super terrier, such a tender soul.

Please visit Stanley's individual thread, in Dogs needing homes in our care on our forum to find out more about him and follow his progress.

If you are interested in re-homing please complete our homing questionnaire  so we can ensure our dogs are matched and will suit your circumstances/lifestyle.

"Please note that this dog is currently in kennels and is also available for foster until a 'forever' home is found".

Stanley's thread below:

Stanley came into us today.  Oh what a shock to meet him and realise he is definitely Chleo's litter brother. He came in from Essex as did Chleo.  Lovely chap, he has done really well in kennels and although a little nervous to meet me he let me put on his leash and away we went.  We shared a lovely walk with Pooch. Here is Stanley...

Stanley apparently was living with an elderly couple who found him too much.  He is neutered and vax'd. he meets dogs really well and walks so nicely with them.
karen

Oh my goodness - he is Chleo's double  Exclamation
Sharonr - Admin

Aw bless - it makes you wonder whether they will recognise each other?
Dee Peter

Stan the Man  - had the pleasure of the his company today and what a little love he is... a new man and to us, is very smiliar to an Lakeland Terrier in body....

We told him, the right family will be out and Lynne and Dee will find them pronto for you.  Your perfect just the way you are and someone will love you just the way you are!!  New owners need to be aware that a Cocktail Sausage goes a long way in Stan the Mans heart!!  Lovely, lovely boy!
CloClo

Bless him. Hope he finds the right home soon.
Paulak

Walked Stanley yesterday - a real sweetheart  Laughing

Thought you all would be interested in how Stanley passes time away in kennels :

So glad it was not me that had to clear this one up!! LOL   Laughing
Tina D

That looks like typical terrier "ragging" to me. Well done Stanley!!!  Laughing  Laughing

Stanley as down in the dumps today. We took him out on a social walk with Jay and Chleo and his spirits soon lifted. Lovely Terrier.
CloClo

Poor Stanley - loved this picture of what he does in his spare time. It looks like our kitchen did once, the day we found out why Tee-J shouldn't have a soft bed!
xxlynne

Stanley seemed brighter yesterday.  Lovely walk through the woods and on the common. Flea treated and cuddles galore. Sweet love.
Dee Peter

Lovely, lovely Stanley..  had a lovely walk with Mac -  then a rest, then another walk, then a rest, then another walk, then a

and again..

and just for a change ..

We came to the conclusion that he was trying to have the longest walk of the day and "pretended" he was tired so he could stay out longer.. needless to say it was a very long and painful walk.. but we didn't mind one bit coz he's a lovely boy and we enjoyed his company.  Clever boy this one  Wink
Dee

Psssttt

Stanley got some special people coming to see him on saturday and may have a new gorgeous girlfriend called Alice - posh bit of totty stunning wire haired fox terrier.

So Stanley and Alice like a Victoriana couple are getting to know each other and Alice is learning to share her life with a new friend.

Sharonr - Admin

What a lovely looking couple ... both of them  Wink Share well Stanley, enjoy  Very Happy
Dee

Stanley doing very well in his new home.

Alice being very accomadating and making sure Stanley keeps to the rules.

Here is the first update from Rachel :

Quote:
Hi Lynne & Dee,

Thought you'd like to see these photos of gorgeous Stanley happy in his new home. We had a good trip back - he is very good in the car, phew! Had a bit of a pop at Alice once, but soon settled and they both slept peacefully. We stopped off at Beaconsfield services as we'd had no lunch, and Paul walked them together while I bought the food - no problems, they walked fine together. Then when we got to Aylesbury, Paul took Alice off for a walk round the neighbourhood while I introduced Stanley to his new house, all the rooms, garden & his new posh bed! We stayed in the garden while Alice came in and there have been (touch wood!) no further scraps. He is extremely affectionate, following me around. He's had a bath (khaki water!!) and didn't like it, but very accepting and sweet and loved the rub down afterwards and the shaking! Now smells much sweeter, of lavender! They've had supper - neither are huge eaters (?) despite the competition but he had a good feed and has been relaxing in the garden. Only one bark so far - when he saw his own reflection in the garden mirrors.....big growl 'who's THAT?!' We have just started to leave them alone downstairs for short periods to get him used to it - always making sure we come back soon! He is currently scratching at the door, but no other noise!

Thanks so much to both of you. He is a real treasure and we're both sure that he's made our little family complete.

We'll speak soon!

Love, Rachel, Paul, Alice & Stan xx"

And here is our boy having a break from being a busy family pet :

Boy sure is a tough life !!!  Laughing
xxlynne

Stanley comes into our Farnham kennels this afternoon as a much loved dog. Sadly despite every good intention Stanley's home hasn't worked out mainly due to his emotional needs being very evident and needing to cling, to the exclusion of Alice his companion dog's needs.

beautifulbeddies

Lovely Stanley

So sorry to hear that Stanley has come back again.  I saw the word "Bedlington" and my stomach went Thud!  Even though I don't have the right home for Stanley, any Beddie (or Beddie cross) does pull at my heart strings.

Hope someone comes along for him soon.
Sara.
karen

Although it was very difficult for everyone involved, Stanley is now at the Farnham kennels. He is settling in well, with his familiar things and some new bits and pieces to play with. All the girls at the kennels came over and said hello so he is getting lots of attention.

He has gone into Jaspa's old kennel, where it is slighly quieter but he can see other dogs and general comings and goings. He was happily playing with his Kong when I left and I will take him out tomorrow.
Bud

bless his little heart........
karen

Stanley is slowly finding his feet. He is eating well and slept all night. He was a little nervous when he was let out for a run this morning but Dilly walked around with him to start with and then he was happy to explore himself. Dilly is spending some extra time with him at the moment.

We had a short walk out this afternoon and because he is still slightly unsure of things, he was on his very best behaviour.

All in all, a lovely little man and I am looking forward to getting to know him better.
karen

Crying or Very sad Stanley still hasn't totally settled and is still being very submissive. I am going to keep a very close eye on him over the next few days as I think he might have been a little hot today and his eye was slightly gungky - I am just hoping it is not the first signs of kennel cough Crying or Very sad

The good news is that he is still eating well and is starting to enjoy his walks. Just occassionally I get a glimpse of the cheeky little monkey I know is in there Wink He has already sussed out that when we get back, there has to be a nice sit and then something good to play with and treats come out of the box in the kitchen. He also knows that they are only delivered once we get back to his kennel.

Out on our walks he is still not completely sure of himself and sticks very close by. If I call him he immediately rolls over and shows me his tummy. He has meet a couple of other dogs out on our walks and done very well.

I just hope he settles soon as I know there is a cheecky chappy in there - Janet is going to take him out on day next week, which I am sure will do him no end of good Exclamation
Janet

I had the real pleasure of taking Stanley out for a while today. He was a bit subdued and nervous to start with but that didn't last for long. He's very affectionate and loves being cuddled, squeezed, stroked and tickled. I think I spent a bit too much time doing this! Embarassed  He was very easy to walk on the lead and he stayed close by most of the time.
We had lunch in the car and he did get very excited when we saw another dog getting out of a car next to us. We saw a few other dogs on the common but didn't actually meet any face to face. We saw 2 rabbits and loads of birds and he took no notice at all.
I chatted with an elderly gentleman for a while and Stanley was happy to sit and wait until we'd finished. This dog has manners!
I think Stanley seemed to become more confident the more we walked. It won't be long before that cheeky terrier comes out.
It broke my heart when he kept standing at the kennel gate every time I went to leave  Sad
After only knowing him for a few hours it's obvious to me that this little guy has so many good points - I have no doubt that some lucky people will find him soon.

karen

Stanley clearly had a wonderful time out with Janet yesterday and was slightly disappointed with the drop in standard of service today - 'what do you mean, just a walk in the woods Shocked Granted you brought two little playmates along and I do love children, but please, where is lunch  Question where is my afternoon stroll and trip in the car 'Rolling Eyes

He really does have the most expressive little face and his eyes definitely talk to you. As I begin to get to know him, I can see that he has a quiet but steely determination - as he wanted to do some more today, he kept disappearing down to the gate and he tried sitting beautifully at it, he tried holding up his paw and he tried tilting his head beguilingly Rolling Eyes

He definitely does not like being shut in - if the door to his 'bedroom' is closed he destroys his bed, up turns his water bowl and has been sick. He has moved kennel again so the door can be left open but the rain cannot blow in. He is very sensible and happy to put himself to bed at night and go in, out of the rain. It does seem he is happy to potter about alone, but cannot deal with a shut door!

I can also see  a trait in him similar to something I had to deal with in my own dog. Unless he has 100% confidence in his handler, he will reluctantly assume the role of leader. It is a responsibility he does not want or like but feels the need to take it on. Once he has taken on this role, he is unhappy and his behavior spirals downwards Crying or Very sad Having been through it with my own dog (although it was hard to accept that that was the problem at first Embarassed ) I know that it is something that can so easily be overcome and can make a massive difference. I just know that the right person can do it for Stanley too Laughing

While we wait for that person, he will continue to have fun times out with Janet and walks with me (and both Janet and I will continue to fall deeper and deeper for him Wink )
karen

Laughing Stanley was out and about with Sammy75 this morning. As Spice was going out later, he had her all to himself - oops someone else to fall in love with him Wink
karen

Laughing For the first time today I felt like Stan the Man has settled and is feeling happier about the world generally  Laughing

He is still 'subdued' but nowhere near as much. He is such fun to spend time with and to watch. After our walk today I was talking to Dilly as she did Stanley's kennel and he pushed the gate open and spent ages just trotting about between the two paddocks. He kept reappearing and sitting beautifully at my feet - I would like to think it was me but I actually know he was after more liver cake Rolling Eyes

Such a lovely, lovely boy who just needs to take his confidence from his handler.
Janet

Stan the Man was definitely a different dog from the one I took out last week. He was much more confident, interested in everything going on around him and he even pulled on the lead - just a bit. He also had quite few admirers today and enjoyed being made a fuss of. I love spending time with him - he's got such a lot to give.

Janet

I had trouble taking photos of Stan the Man today as he wouldn't keep still for long enough. I don't know how I managed to catch him winking! Lovely boy.
karen

Confused Stanley has been on such good form this week, I was suprised to find him a little subdued this morning. He enjoyed his walk out with Julia earlier in the week and behaved very well. If she invaded his space too much he had a little grumble but that was it.

This morning he was very sluggish and at one point was dragging his feet behind me. We diverted out of the woods and onto a road in the sun and he perked up a little (perhaps he is terrier x repile and needs the warmth of the sun to get him going on these colder mornings  Wink )

I couldn't see any visable signs that there was anything wrong, so hopefully he will return to his old self Confused
xxlynne

The picture I hesitated taking, but sums up a lot of our walk together!

Handsome dog you!

Stanley had a lovely walk this afteroon  He, like Tia, ate a lot of grass, had a lot of smells, hardly any wees and didn't pull at all.  We didn't meet any dogs. A really pleasant autumn afternoon at a leisurely pace.
karen

Laughing Thankfully Stanley has cheered up. Yesterday he was all waggy tail as we set off and he used his special delaying tactics on the way back  Rolling Eyes

He went out with Tia today and they both rubbed along very well - neither seem particularly big 'players' and are happy to do their own thing. On the way back through the kitchen he had to remind me that we hadn't stopped at 'the box' and he hadn't chosen a toy and treat - silly me Rolling Eyes
Janet

We walked the lovely Stanley today, first of all with Tia and then we took him in the car to a common nearby. He seems to enjoy riding in the car and he's no trouble at all. My mum walked him most of the time and she said he's about the easiest dog she's ever walked. He didn't pull on the lead and he trotted along quite happily next to her. We thought he seemed a bit fed up to start with but he perked up especially after having some liver cake - his little tail didn't stop wagging Very Happy  He made friends with a couple of dogs on the common and shared treats with them. He's an affectionate little dog, likes people and likes being made a big fuss of. On the way back, he curled up in a little ball on mum's lap and looked so sweet  Smile

PatE

Hope Stanley gets a new home soon - he sounds like a little smasher!
karen

Confused Stanley was not impressed with me today. We weren't able to have our usual walk but we spent some time together in his run - he wasn't impressed Rolling Eyes He wanted to go out and used everything he could think of to get me going. Sadly it wasn't to be and eventually he settled for some tummy rubs and cuddles. It was sad Crying or Very sad
Janet

Stanley was a very happy chappy today. His tail never stopped wagging all the time we were walking. I think it was probably because he hasn't been out and about for a few days. He was a pleasure to walk as usual only more so today as he seemed to be smiling at us. It's always hard to leave him in his kennel. His turn must be coming up soon.

Good news Stanley goes into foster with Gustav tomorrow.

Thank you, Gustav - just what Stanley needs. Will miss him but am so very happy for him  Laughing
xxlynne

Stanley had a lovely car journey then several walks by the river today.  He met Gustav 'Livingstone I presume!' and they delighted in each other and disappeared down the stairs to the underground..to go into foster. Gustav's last terrier suffered Sep. Anx. so he knows how to deal with and 'stretch' him. Have fun Stanley.

xxlynne

Stanley is doing well.  Gustav has had him for 2 weeks now. He doesn't suffer from Separation Anxiety in G.'s situation.  He is sleeping happily in the hallway on his blanket and when G. comes back after a couple of hours he is found asleep on the sofa.  He welcomes people into their the home without a fanfare. He does get excited when seeing dogs in the park which G. hasn't quite managed to work him through yet.  He also is very food focused but Gustav is using selective treats to get the message through as to what is acceptable behaviour and what is not. Intelligent little Fella Wink !
karen

Laughing  Laughing What lovely news - I knew Stan the Man could make it through and out the other side - lovely, lovely boy, who, I hope is appreciating everything Gustav is giving him Wink

I have always believed he will make somebody very, very happy Laughing
xxlynne

Well yes Stanley did make Gustav very very happy, but Gustav has gone and bucked the trend and landed himself a great job..so Stanley had to come back into kennels today.

Gustav has done a great job with him..he has put on the weight he lost; presented beautifully clean and pampered! He proved himself to settle quite well when left just a little scratching on the door and found in "sleep mode" on the settee on return. He is exciteable around most dogs when meeting them outside and needs gentle controlled intros...London parks weren't the best environment as dog density is high. He loved his food and cuddles/ belly rubs/ and greeted visiting friends very well. He has acquired the label 'food thief' no casual meals left on coffee tables whilst you go and get the remote controls!

Stanley spent most of today with me travelling to Gatwick S..waiting in the car A little car damage done in the hour he was left so best crated if you're car proud, which I have long since ceased to be! Had a lovely walked around the Devil's punchbowl where he saw a Labrador and was cool and calm; he shared my cheese sandwich which he delighted in.

Stanley travelling as my companion..the lead is how I secure a terrier, to avoid them leaping out the car on arrival.

Our walk in the wet

karen

Confused I know I shouldn't be but I am really looking forward to seeing Stanley again tomorrow Embarassed

He doesn't like kennels and I really hope this will be a brief visit back to us but cuddles all round tomorrow.
karen

Stanley spent his first night back in the Ladies Block and seemed much less despondent than I was expecting this morning Confused

He is moving again this afternoon and will have Kathy as his neighbour.

He is looking very dapper after his time with Gustav. We had a walk out and he has remembered how to prolong it Rolling Eyes  We didn't bump into anybody today.

It was lovely to see him, but also very, very sad Crying or Very sad
karen

Laughing Hopefully Sam will be on later with details, but Stanley had a lovely walk with Sam today and ended up having a fun play with a border collie - the collie's owner said 'oh...not very good with other dogs' and lo and behold, the next thing they were having a whale of time Laughing

Stanley is looking so good after his break with Gustav and he is still the wonderful cheeky little chappie he has always been - just another belly rub please, oh and another one Rolling Eyes
Janet

Stanley had been doing too much 'boinging' in his kennel this morning and his paws were looking a bit sore.
We had a long leisurely walk with lots of belly rubs. He's such a softy and really needs to be on somebody's lap right now. He's looking great with a bit more weight on him and especially smart in the RR bandana (thanks TinaD!!)
We're going to walk Stanley with our 2 tomorrow - should be interesting!

Janet

Well Stanley's paws were sore and bloody when we went to collect him on Saturday and he was struggling to walk, so we carried him to the car and brought him home to give him a bit of time to heal and to spend some time with Paddy (JRT) and Bella (GSD x)

When we got home, he walked in, inspected the kitchen and lounge, followed closely by a bemused Paddy and Bella, and made himself at home on a mat. Not quite what I was expecting - it's usually a bit of a madhouse when we have visiting dogs!

Over the last couple of days, Paddy has tried so hard to get Stanley to play with him, but Stanley wasn't having any of it. He even showed him how to steal a pair of socks - still no interest. Stanley much prefers to chill out, lounge about and sleep! He really didn't pay much attention to Paddy or Bella and Bella tried to pretend he wasn't there.

Stanley is a sweet, cuddly, affectionate little man, with quite a stubborn streak. He does like to do what he wants to do so needs to know what's allowed and what's not. He pushes his way to the front for attention and food so we made a point of making him wait until last - he accepted this very well. He does respond to firm commands - first of all he puts on his 'soppy' face and when he doesn't get his own way, out comes the 'sulky' face, but he gets over it! Very crafty boy.

He's a real pleasure to have around - he likes to be fussed, loves tummy tickles, would follow you everywhere if you'd let him, loves his food and loves human company. He really would make a loyal and devoted friend.

We managed to put cream on his feet when he arrived but when we tried again later, there was no way he was going to let anyone touch his back feet - he told us in no uncertain terms. He did tell Paddy off a couple of times for going near his back feet too (and also for keep pestering him to play when he didn't want to!)

We're about to take Stanley back now - his feet are a lot better and he's walking really well. The sad thing is, it's going to happen again as he really doesn't like being in kennels. I hope somebody takes him home soon, permanently!

Janet

More photos!

P'Are you coming out to play?' S 'Go away!'
karen

Laughing What wonderful photos - all are lovely but I particularly love the last one of Paddy looking longingly at Stanley Laughing

How funny that Paddy, who can be so picky about who is allowed in his home and who isn't, accepted Stanley so readily and that they 'got' each other without upset Laughing Amazing Exclamation

Thank you so much, Janet and Olwyn for giving Stan the Man a break. Just hope his forever home comes soon - he hates kennels so much Crying or Very sad
Janet

It was a pleasure to look after Stanley - he's so easy in so many ways and really needs a home of his own.

I was amazed and delighted by Paddy's acceptance of Stanley. Pad usually isn't keen on other dogs in the house. He's gets a bit jealous, over excited and a bit growly but Stanley really dealt with him well right from the start and they were fine together. It was great to see - all credit to Stanley Smile
karen

Crying or Very sad It didn't take Stanley long to hurt his feet again in kennels - he keeps bouncing up and down and catching them Crying or Very sad

Laughing He has gone home with Janet today for a little R&R and TLC  Laughing
Sharonr - Admin

Well that's nice news.  Very Happy
Janet

He's currently asleep in his basket, all 4 paws in the air and I swear there's a little smile on his face  Laughing
Sharonr - Admin

Too right there is - would put bets on it that he is smiling!
xxlynne

One very significant thing about Stanley he is intelligent   and...devious..bong bong bong in the kennels and he saviour appears Wink  Only too right this magnificant terrier doesn't deserve kennels. Thank you Paddy  you are a star!  I owe you a big cuddle and Bella  special Bella you are naturally gracious!
Janet

This morning Stanley decided that it might be nice to join Paddy and Bella for a few minutes tearing around like mad things. Great to see - shame the camera wasn't handy Sad

Sharonr - Admin

Devious?!  Yep it's written all over his little face ...
xristine

He looks so cute and happy!
Janet

Poor Stanley had very sore feet, so we brought him home again for a few more days to give him time to relax and heal and to give him a break from his kennel. It was a good opportunity to get to know him a bit better too.

Paddy and Bella welcomed him back and they spent every day and evening together without any problems at all. Stanley isn't one for joining in with play, although Paddy did succeed in getting him to chase him a bit once or twice. I don't really think Stanley knows how to play with other dogs and is happy to play with a ball on his own, but I'm sure over time, if he lives with another dog, he will learn as he's a really clever boy.

Stanley is a real food monster. He knows where all the food in the house is and is there like a shot when you open any drawer, cupboard, door. He likes coffee and I caught him gently carrying off Mum's china cup to lick the coffee drops from inside. He also silently pinched an empty turkey packet from the bin. There definitely is a cheeky terrier in there and it only takes a few days to come out.

Getting his own way is very high on Stanley's agenda. I think he must keep a little diary in his head of tactics that have worked, both present and past. He will try anything - from special looks, to actions such as sitting up on his back legs with 1 foot in the air and if that fails, both feet in the air. If all else fails, he rolls over on his back and gives you the look at the same time. It's hard not to give in, but he does need boundaries with firmness, consistency and patience. He generally does as he's told after telling him 3 times - which isn't bad at all!

Stanley needs his home soon! He's come on in leaps and bounds in only a few days. He would be great as an only dog, but he can live with others provided he knows what he's allowed to do and what he's not. He doesn't need much to make him happy, and he's got such a lot to give in return.

Jilly Allen

Ah Janet you are lovely - I want to come and live in your house. You have given Stanley such a great time he didn't want to be a way from you.

Well done you  and lets hope his forever home comes up quickly but for the moment I think he seems incredibly happy to be with you - for a little bit longer.
MozartsGirl

I read Stanley's thread every day to keep up with how he's getting on. He was with us for 8 weeks and we were so sorry that, in the end, we just weren't the right family for him. He's a smashing dog in so many ways and we still miss him. Janet - he DOES play with other dogs (eventually!) Every evening after supper without fail he would roll on his back and then start telling Alice (our fox terrier) 'come on, let's play!' They would hurtle through the house, wrestle, make puppy growling sounds...lovely to watch! Unfortunately, he is very strong and would soon over power her, she ended up being very nervous around him, but that wasn't his fault - or hers, just a personality clash! He does take quite a long time to exhibit all his personality quirks. One thing he adores is having his paws gently massaged on the pads...he would sit by my chair and hold his feet up on at a time for me to do it, which I readily complied with. I'm sorry they're so sore now, poor boy. I so hope that his forever home comes up SOON, he really does deserve it & has such a lot to offer the right person. Thanks for all you're doing for him in the meantime - please give him a special stroke and hug from me xox angel13
