Spot - Border Collie (Furry Friends)

Spot is a 12 year old Border Collie due to arrive tomorrow. He is coming over from Ireland and although I don't normally deal with Irish dogs anymore (enough on my own doorstep!) this one really tugged at my heart strings. Sad

Spot belonged to a man who did love him who then died. Although his family promised that they would care for Spot as his dying wish, as soon as he had died they went about looking for a rescue to take him.

Spot is totally blind and also old. All the rescues told them to have him put to sleep because he was old and nobody would want him, so they booked him in for euthanasia. Luckily (or not as it turned out) a rescue finally heard about him and agreed to take him in. However, the rescue have a huge amount of free running dogs (sometimes up to 50) and unfortunately Spot was in the wrong place at the wrong time and accidently bumped into the alpha dog of the huge pack.
When this dog turned on him other dogs attacked him too and this resulted in a huge amount of injury to him. He ended up in the vets and they had to stitch and staple him up - he ended up looking like a jigsaw puzzle!

The rescue that took him in then decided that for his own safety, that he should live in an outside run and kennel in isolation in case this was to happen again.

When I heard about this poor soul, I thought that he needed a lucky break, so hopefully that is what he will get. Smile

Spot is good with other dogs, but needs a quiet home. He needs a place he can familiarise himself with and get to know the layout so any furniture would need to stay in one place. He is also good with cats and quiet around children although I am looking for a place where he can relax and not be bothered by little tykes!

Spot will be neutered, vaxed and chipped before he leaves us.

If you can offer Spot a new home please call me!

Spot has arrived and was collected directly from John (BIGGSD's) place.

Oh dear...how scared was he when I first met him? Full of growls and hiding in the smallest corner of my car that he could squeeze into. Sad

Having travelled in the back of a transport van with other dogs, he was too scared to even walk out of the crate in the van. By the time I got home he had ventured out of the small corner of the car and was laying next to my own dog Conker (I had to take my lot to save lots of barking early in the morning) and they were staring blindly at each other.  Laughing

He arrived home and was greeted with a bowl of food which cheered him up no end!

He has been introduced to Frankie-Boy and Major (RR pups in foster here at the mo) and also Mindy the Jack Russell and all is fine. He is very good with the pups and they are, of course, all over him like a rash. A new dog - very exciting!

Yes he is blind, but is currently checking the place out and has worked out the sofa already! He has already worked out the lay out of the garden and has met the ferrets with no reaction, just a bit of confusion with the unusual smell.

He is very spritely and pretty clean in the home although entire (not for long!) and so has marked a couple of times.

He is very responsive to his name and his recall is great. He tends to follow the sound of clapping as it is a definate sound and easy to locate. He is a little love!

Took Spot out for a walk  and he was great. I had to approach him in the run carefully letting him know I was approaching but once he had a sniff I was able to put the harness on.  Getting him out was a bit tricky - he jumped onto a box in reception, maybe he thought it was a bed. Once out in the lane he stuck to the right hand side but kept up a good pace all the way, nose down taking it all in. I kept chatting away to him but he wasn't much interested in me.  He is confident negotiating the world and uses his collie brain to help him out. He needs to have his fur tidied up  and regrow his shaved area but otherwise he is quite a substantial furry Collie.

Spot may be blind, but his hearing is scarily accurate! Every sound that happens, his ears prick up and he tries to work out where it is coming from.
The only way I can describe Spot once he gets to know you is 'adoring'. And he only arrived this morning!!!
He is incredibly affectionate and considering that he has lived outside all of his life, it must have been awful for such a people-dog. He is also a good boy with other dogs. He would happily slot into a life as an only pet or as part of a pair. He is patient with the pups and shows no malice towards the older dogs - even Stan who had a pop at him today because he misread his body language.
The trouble with Spot is that because he is blind he stares straight ahead and charges forward. He doesn't blink alot and to a slightly more dominant dog, it would look a bit threatening. This is what happened this evening and Stan took a dislike to his demeanor. Spot did not try and fight (not that he would have had the chance because I am way to quick for that!!!) and the trouble was stopped within a couple of seconds.

Spot is also very loyal and obedient. I was standing talking at the kennels today and placed Spot behind me and told him to sit (which he did). He sat patiently and waited until I had finished talking.

As you can see Spot is quite a large lad and I have been told nothing to look at, but personally I think he is lovely!  Razz
These pics show his best side! His back has got a big shaved patch on it and is scarred from him being attacked. Luckily the hair will grow back and nobody will be any the wiser!

More pics! He is amazing this dog! From a dog that never even has lived indoors in his whole life, to a dog who hogs the sofa...and all in 17 hours!!!

Wow does this dog love children!!!

My friend who owns(!) 5 children of her own is happy for me to kid test dogs with her tribe and Spot passed with flying colours. First of all he had his bath and he bravely fought me all the way! But with the help of a handy brother, after he had a bit of a shave due to matting on his back he was primped, hair-dryered and brushed out. He also had a collar replacement and now is the proud owner of a paw-print leather collar. Smile

Pics from last night...

Spot had an extra special surprise this morning too when the previous owner (who died) nephew turned up to give him a walk. Spot went for a walk round the local park and I thought he might have been a bit upset as he wouldn't eat his dinner straight away, but it turned out to be nothing more than that he wanted to eat his grub indoors where he felt safe.

Where's Spot?

Well Spot came home with me last night and we had a lovely evening. Happy to eat his dinner and go for a walk. He only bumped into a few things but seemed to want to walk underneath the gorse bush .... which was not a good idea with his bald back Crying or Very sad Ouch.

He wasn't sure about the bed in the kitchen so decided to lie down beside it while he "watched" me make my dinner. After dinner he was a perfect gentleman and sat by my side curled up on his rug.

Bedtime was fine, though he did wake me for a quick pee at 1 am. But then we both settled back to sleep. I was glad that he didn't show any interest in climbing the stairs and settled into his bed. When I woke at 7:30, there he was, fast asleep on the landing.  Laughing Ooh!

So we've spent the morning practising stairs and now he's decided that sleeping on one of the stair turns is just fine!

What a gentleman, what a cuddle. Who could ask for more?
