Snowflake (Furry Friends) Staffie x Chiswick W London

This is Snowflake.
It was the first picture that I saw of her at a dog pound needing help. She had been picked up as a stray and never claimed...

Obviously you can see from the picture that she isn't the most confident dog in the world.

Snowflake has now been in rescue for about three weeks. She has been spayed, vaccinated and microchipped, but has some issues that need time, understanding and patience.

In the right home she is going to make a lovely addition to the family but she does have fear issues with men. Not when she is out and about. She is more interested in playing with her ball! It is when she is in the home and feels threatened that she shows memories of her past.
We have also noticed that she bonds very strongly with the ladies and feels it is her job to protect them. So, if she is having a cuddle and a man comes over and tries to show affection to the woman then she will protect the person that she has bonded with. Ironicaly she is very good with children, although this has only been under close supervision.

Snowflake is not great with cats or smaller animals and prefers to be an only dog. She exercises well with other dogs off lead, but gets jealous of them in the home.

Below are some pics of Snowflake once she had settled into living in a home.

Once settled she is a very sweet and loving dog, but she needs someone who can help her gain confidence with men, but at the same time are not worried about putting their foot down with her and making her aware of unacceptable behaviour.

Although Snowflake is fine with kids we have decided to search for a home for her without any youngsters simply because she needs to have one to one attention and lots of time.

My lovely Snowflake has had no interest yet.

It is hard work to describe this dog in words. On first meeting she is unsure and flighty. She tends to feed off of her handlers confidence, but considering everyone at the kennels (she comes to work with me everyday) can handle her and she is safely walked out and about on her walk everyday around strangers, she really is not that bad.

Snowflake would be better off in a home with a one to one relationship. Either that or a couple who are happy to work with her through her initial fear of strangers. The home that she originally went to was lovely. They thought she was great, but because they spent alot of time visiting other people and took the dog with them, it freaked Snowflake out. No sooner had she got used to one person, she was visiting another.

She is not a mean dog. She is an abused dog who needs understanding and love. When she bonds with you she is like a lap cat! She loves nothing better than to sit on you and cuddle. She finds love and then unfortunately has to protect it, but this is managable and once you place guidelines she is very easy going.

For example, if she is laying on your lap and someone wants to sit next to you, then she may get flustered and panicked. With kind words and patience then she quickly learns that the other person is not a threat and will happily sit and be cuddled by two! She doesn't mind!!!

In the past this dog has been hit, shouted at and badly treated. She needs time to get to know her new person/people and once there then she is a delight to have around. The first time that I met her she was cowering in the back of her kennel and hiding in the corner. Now she leaps into my arms because she is so happy to see me.

Her confidence levels have tripled in the time that I have had her. Now she needs someone who can repay that love and offer her the commitment that she deserves but has never had.

Snowflake is still looking for a home. Her confidence with people is so much better than when she first arrved.
When she first found her way to me she was very scared of anyone new and the first glimpse  got of Snowflake was her sitting as far into the corner of her kennel as possible and shaking like a leaf.
When Sally came a couple of weeks back to walk the dogs she met Snowflake briefly and she ran straight up to Sally for a fuss. There was no fear and she was as confident with her as she is with me. I was very proud of my Staffie girl!  Very Happy

Here are some pics of her today frolicking with sticks and getting some much needed one to one.

It will be very hard for me to part with Snowflake. She has been with me since October and she has blossomed into a loving and affectionate dog. However since some recent negative comments about her being here with me it is time for her to move on. I have a very close bond with her and am very keen to get her into a home who will work with her as I have. I have put her in many new situations which she has learnt to cope with. Walking out and about amongst strangers and other dogs, introductions to cat and children and teaching her basic commands that she had no clue of when she first got to me.

She is definately the type of dog who will lay down and die for the person she has bonded with. Once she has learnt to trust you she is very obedient and the whole time you are with her she is watching and waiting to see what is expected of her. However, her past comes out sometimes. If she is doing something unacceptable and you need to raise your voice at her then she will look very scared and give you the slanty eyed look and semi roll over to try and appease you (submission). It is not something we encourage here as dogs do not have to appease us here and she is getting more confident in that way too.

Snowflake is very well behaved on the lead and after the initial excitement does not pull on the lead and is a plaesure to walk. She also has got the command 'Leave it!' down to a fine art. She turns away instantly if she hears this and my cats can now sit in the same room as her without any reaction at all. They do not get to meet nose to nose, but when she firstarrived she was desperate to get to them.

Although she spends all day with me at work, at home she has to stay in a crate as she can get jealous of other dogs being near her toys/chews. Opposite her cage is a tall cage with three chinchillas in it and she has no interest in those either (or the rats that are in a cage next to those). The smaller animals upstairs (hamsters, mice, gerbils etc.) are a little bit too much for her to cpe with, but nobody is perfect!

This does mean though that she is fully crate trained and although she has to stay in a crate for alot of the time whilst in the house, it is large and she is let out regularly (these were part of the negative comments made recently) and is never in there for more than half an hour at a time.
In a home that suits her a crate would not be necessary as she is not destructive and is clean in the home. A good reason for crating her would be if visitors came round until she had got used to them being there. Once she realises that people are going to be nice to her she is fine.

Snowflake was found stray in early Dec.  estimated age 1 year.  She obviously had witnessed unrest in her home as she was uncomfortable with men indoors and try and protect her female owner; - just barking and is now getting better, learning to trust in this situation but obviously has been frightened at some point.  She is fine with men and dogs outside.  She would prefer an only pet status within the family and indeed why not.  She just needs some nurturing to heal some nightmare situations that play in her head..this is happening and a rescue home who takes her gently and offers a non-threatening atmosphere will soon see this little lady relax and build up trust again. Snowflake is neutered; vax'd and chipped.  She is in very good health. Her face is a picture revealing her having found love with her fosterer in South London.

Any update on Snowflake Emma?

Snowflake is fine. Smile Still looking for a home but she frequently greets me by leaping into my arms for a proper Staffie cuddle.
She relishes showing off the various sticks that she finds on her adventures and is only happy when carrying one.

Snowflake has an adorable character and it doesn't take long to get past her slightly suspicious nature and she quickly wheedles her way into your heart.

I adore that last pic above of Snowflake. It wasn't taken so long ago and was the happiest day of her so far. She just seemed on that day, that life couldn't get any better.

Except hopefully it has now.  Very Happy
