Smiffy Jack Russell Terrier 11.03 Portsmouth

Smiffy Smiffy was surrendered into a rescue 2 years ago, when 3 yrs old and rehomed. He has been great on all accounts; settled and living with a staffie cross JRT. He was not always tolerant of dogs outside but nothing of worth.  He was then described as protective when visitors arrived, snappy on occasions but never bitten. But then he was left tied up outside a supermarket, unsupervised (as you do!) and a child was nipped. The event was unclear. What is clear his owner was expecting too much from him and not grasping his needs. Smiffy's owner lost her confidence and took him to the vet to be Put to sleep as the original rescue nolonger could take him back. The vet refused, as his assessment was his temperament was sound, as has been ours.  Excitement and a little expression of personality can so often become a death warrant for a terrier...we like our terriers spirited but when respected and engaged in gentle introductions they learn 'no threat' as their motto. Smiffy will make a fantastic terrier and will be adored!

Oh dear Smiffy you are going to have such a wonderful forever home!

karen

Smiffy really is a lovely little character. He is desparate for cuddles and a fuss. I couldn't decide yesterday if he is a tad over weight or just a chunky build. I kept thinking about it as we walked today and I think he would benefit from a bit more exercise just to trim him up. It is nothing serious, though Wink

He has certainly had some training put in to him and can 'sit' beautifully. Even though he must be confused about everything at the moment, he has a very happy disposition and sunny nature. Laughing

Lovely, lovely boy Laughing

The lovely Smiffy

Delightful Jack..smiling and joval. Lovely steady energy and so enjoyable to walk.  Smiffy met a Labrador as kennel maid hadn't noticed we were in the exercise area.  Smiffy was a little concerned and went up very close and made a few overtures but were probably attempts to play, by this time, he had slipped his collar so we were praying all would go well.  They moved around together and then came apart finding focuses apart from each other.   On our walk we were confronted with a barking dog..Smiffy seemed not to notice.  On our return as we walked in, a whippet who occupies the next kennel to Smiffy ran over and they got to know each other. I then led Smiffy (with another collar on by now so no chance of him slipping again) back into his kennel. As I closed the door on him, suddenly 3-5 quick barks ..was that excitement, protest or I'm behind here now I can feel confident...not sure. He settled immediately after and watched me as I left.

Perhaps he needs more positive encounters with dogs but certainly from what I encountered..meeting a dog unexpectedly both off leads and then both on leads and finally he on lead and the other free...he did really well walking with a stranger to him. Good lad Smiffy..loves yer!
Den

Smiffy sounds wonderful - just needs an owner that knows that a dog is a dog (amazing how many people don't realise this!!)

Good luck handsome - you deserve it.
karen

Smiffy continues to settle in well and has got used to our routine already. I interrupt his quick sharp barks as the cry ' let me out, let me out' Crying or Very sad The minute the kennel door is open he just gives the most lovely cuddles, really snuggles into your legs love4

Sadly his favorite orange bone is no more (found it in Jaspa's kennel this morning, a little the worse for wear Rolling Eyes ) Like Chleo, he does love his squeakies Exclamation
karen

Smiffy continues to do well. Today he and I went back to visit the vets that saved him and he had his second vax. He was as good as gold in the car and thoroughly enjoyed greeting everybody at the vets. They all made a huge fuss of him Laughing

I have noticed all week that his kennel is clean and on checking today, he doesn't foul it.

On our return he helped me pick out another new collar as the one he had on had rubbed his neck a little. He is now sporting a lovely red one, very kindly donated by TRPD.

Such a darling Laughing

Smiffy had been doing really well this week, still keeping his kennel clean, out enjoying walks and meeting other dogs. Some he was fine with and others he barked at. In those situations 'stop it' seemed to be the command he best understood. After that he sat nicely while the humans exchanged pleasantries.

Crying or Very sad Sadly today he is under the weather and has a cough. He went out for a short walk but really just wanted to be cuddled. We spent some time in his kennel and it was very hard to leave him. Hopefully it will run its course and he will buck up in a couple of days. I found it very hard to leave him Crying or Very sad
karen

Smiffy was still feeling a little sorry for himself today but seemed a little brighter. Even though the weather was a little......I decided we would go out anyway. He seemed to enjoy the walk and then we went back for a blow dry in the kitchen. At first he was slightly suspicious of my hairdryer and diffuser, but after allowing him to have a good sniff at the diffuser and then brushing him as we dried, he decided that it was OK. After having had 'the works' he was happy to return to his bed with a bone.

What a stoical little chap he is Exclamation
Den

Ahhh he really sounds lovely
karen

Very Happy Smiffy is well and truely on the mend and was very pleased to see me today. We had a gentle walk and lots of fuss. In contrast to the others, when you are out with Smiffy, he is more tuned into his human company than anything else going on around him. He adjusts his speed to trot along just in front but not pulling. When I slowed down, so did he. When I sped up ditto. He will stop to sniff if something interesting crosses his path but does not dart off to seek it out.

He really will make someone a wonderful companion. Laughing
karen

Smiffy was a lot brighter today. He missed a walk yesterday so was quite lively today. I think he has lost a little weight and certainly seems a little fitter, even though he has been poorly. By the weekend he should be totally recovered.
Den

Glad to hear that he's feeling better.  thumbup

Laughing Smiffy is back to his old self again. He was very perky today and after a short walk in the woods he accompanioned me to a plant sale to buy some plants for the hanging baskets. He was as good as gold in the car and seemed to really enjoy socializing with everybody. He is very much a 'people' dog and very easy to have out and about. After he helped me pick out just the right plants, Wink  we had a quick coffee and then headed back.

I am so happy he is fully recovered back to his happy little self Laughing
karen

I have been walking Smiffy on the extender lead for a couple of days to see his reaction and recall. He doesn't wander particularly far but sometimes can get left behind Rolling Eyes His recall is very good - you only get as far as 'Smiffy' and he is with you before you can say 'come'. I haven't done it under particularly testing circumstances -ie when there is something he is determined to go after, but only because the situation hasn't arisen yet.

He responds to a fuss and then a treat, in that order Wink
karen

It was lovely to see Smiffy this morning after half term. I got lots and lots of cuddles and it took us a while to get on with things. Smiffy also helped out with some PR work to say 'thank you' for a box of donated goodies we received from the Worldwide Veterinary Service.

After not seeing him last week, I can see that he has lost weight and I had to adjust his harness this morning. Although he had a little to lose, I hope it doesn't go any further now. As he has molted, his gorgeous little polka dots are becoming more and more visible.

This little man has so much love to give, we just need to find someone for him to give it all to Exclamation
karen

As Smiffy has lost some weight I decided to worm him again this morning. When we were out walking we also stopped in the shade and he let me check his ears, eyes and mouth. When I told him what I was doing, he looked at me as if to say 'haven't a clue what you're on about but I will go with you on this one.'

Whilst we were out, he thought about chasing a squirrel that crossed our path, but then decided against it - well, it was rather hot Rolling Eyes

I think he has finally realized that he is not on 'holiday' and kennel life is his lot for the forseeable future. I think he is a little down about that Crying or Very sad

Lets just hope that 'the forseeable future' is shortsighted Exclamation

Dont understand where the terrier homes are currently Mad

Darling Smiffy, all he wants is to have a lap to cuddle on and some love. Luckily he is spending some time during the afternoon in the office with the kennel owner.

Heaven for him Laughing Hopefully this will help him through until he finds that special person for him Exclamation
karen

Laughing Smiffy had some 'special' visitors this morning. We all went for a lovely walk together and Smiffy was very careful to ensure everybody got their fair share of cuddles Rolling Eyes

When we got back, there was really only one place that Smiffy was going and that was to a new life and home Very Happy

We have done it as a FVH and hope to complete the adoption in 2 weeks time.

Smiffys day

Hi All, well, Smiffy has certainly proven to be a happy chap and is presently sat on the sofa beside me while typing this mail...

What can I say, Smiffy has settled in perfectly well and is never more than a step or two behind me, we had a shopping stop on the way home from Farnham and bought a bed, food, bowls, leads and squeekies...which no longer squeek!

Walks have been very calm affairs, other dogs are greeted well, after a little pulling, Smiffy is walking beautifully to heel and only 'goes terrier' when a reassuring word is given.

All in all, we are delighted, and Smiffy seems very happy. We'd like to thank you all for your help and hard work...how you all do it I have no idea. We are now, a very happy family with the little Smiffy to remind us to have fun, look into everything, go for a walk and take every chance for a cuddle!

Another day

Well, Smiffy had another good nights sleep but did dash up at 6 and belted down stairs and tried to get through to the laminate floor on the hall...I had shut the door the night before, so Smiffy was a little bit sick on the carpet... No problems as it was hardly anything at all...he had been cleaning himself up a lot the night before (a smart Smiffy now!) so I suspect a bit of 'hair block'.

We had a more urban walk today, met a couple of my colleagues who were treated to a SERIOUS welcome cuddle...

My dad popped around to the house today to test Smiffys 'defensive' character...well, after the initial bark at the knock of the door, Smiffy went into charm overdrive and soon had my dad rubbing his tum and generally being a cuddlepost...Dad was very taken with Smiffy and not only wants to 'dog sit', but also would like to know how soon he can!!! Going to have a problem there I can see!

Right, got another colleague popping around this afternoon, Theo, from Ghana, so this can be a race relations test for our little Smiffy, just make sure he's not a BNP voter...I confidently predict a whole lot more cuddles and love!

OK, I'd best get on...I now type (work wise) at the table with Smiffy under the table on his 'day bed'...he doesn't mind chilling out in the day time, but can't go more than an hour without a bit of contact...which as you can image, I really do like!

I'll pop some more photos up shortly, Smiffy the star!

Chin up Karen, if you are down in Port-smiff let us know...he'd like to see his old warden I'm sure  Very Happy  Very Happy  Very Happy

Friday

Hi all,

Another little update from the world of Smiffy!

Well, he has been a busy chap, always loving and helpful. Lots of socialisation, lots of new friends and laps to cuddle on...and my pal Theo from Ghana was treated to loads of attention and licks so thankfully Smiffy isn't a BNP voter!

We have discovered he's not too keen on Post Office people tho...twice now while sat outside a city centre coffee shop, he's ignored the hundreds of passer by's only to focus on and growl at a passing postman...amazing eyesight...or do the Post Office have a specific aftershave they all use?

I had to leave Smiffy alone for a couple of hours today, he was not a happy chappy, loads of crying and barking...to be expected I guess, but the effect it had on me was awful, I am hoping that after he's realised this is his 'forever' home, he will relax a little bit...and when I got back, I discovered he'd eaten the post, only a letter from the tax man and one from the bank...I have felt like shredding them up myself before so perhaps he's really got tuned into me!

A couple of quick questions, terrier wise...

Do you think he'll relax about being left over time, or is there anything we can do, we are already going out for short trips so he knows we come back, any clues...or is it always going to hurt?

Last one, Karen...what were the little treats Smiffy liked on the walk?

Right, going to enjoy the weekend now...best wishes....Mike, Heather and Smiffy...
karen

Lovely to have an update Laughing

With regards to being left - it is sometimes difficult to start with but does usually get better. I always make sure I use the same phrase and do exactly the same thing each time I leave. My own dog and some of my fosters seemed to respond to that. I always say ' I am going out, you stay here and I'll see you in a minute. Bye bye.' Then I go. My dog has gone from 'crying' to just taking himself off and lying on the mat, where he stays while we are out. The fosters I have had have followed suit. With one of them I also had to leave a raw hide chew. They only got that when I went out so that was also a signal and seemed to work.

I think the key here is to keep doing it, preferably for short periods of time so that they eventually accept that you are going but will return. Smiffy is used to my 'phrase' as when I left the kennels I always said the same thing but 'see you tomorrow' instead of 'in a minute' and he did take that as a signal and stopped barking and went to bed.

I am sure others will come back with some advice too. The main point is that with time and perseverance it should get better Exclamation

Smiffy's favorite treats are Tina's homemade liver cake (I buy it by the bucket load at each fundraising event we do and freeze it) but until you can make it to a local fund raising event ( Wink ) he also liked 'Happy Walks' which can be bought in supermarkets. It is in a blue pouch or little white tub.

As for the aversion to postmen  Rolling Eyes  I haven't had to deal with that but would suggest controlled exposure. That seems to work with any little fears, with treats for a 'non reaction'. You need to keep calm and confident for this to work.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend Laughing
Sharonr - Admin

Some good advice there.  Jilly also has some good practices - sure she will share later. LOL!

Only thing I wouldn't do is leave a dog with a rawhide chew, sometimes they give up chewing, swallow whole and can choke/gag - particularly if another dog is around and making "I want your chew signals".  Call me a paranoid dog mummy, but I never leave mine alone when they are eating anything.

Le weekend

Well, we've had a fab weekend...

Heather has at last had the chance to spend the day with Smiffy, we've shared the walks, both sets of parents have now been fully 'Smiffied' and a host of friends have visited...he's quite the socialite now...

We took him for a jolly in my car around to Heathers parents house which has a large secure grassy garden...this gave us an opportunity to see how Smiffy reacted to a bit of freedom off the lead...well, what a star he is!

After he marked and explored the garden and bushes (with two big oak trees with Squirrels about!), he kept us in sight the whole time and kept coming back to 'check on us'. We tried a bit of playing and he ran at high speed round and round, playing chase and generally having a ball. With the energy gone a bit, I tried a bit of 'training'...Smiffy did the sit, stay and recall wonderfully, running back and sitting at my feet with his tail just a blur... He walked around the garden to heel without a lead on, keeping close and attentive.

Fetch and retreive may take a bit of work...he's excellent at chasing a stick, killing it and holding it in his mouth, bringing it back and letting go may take a bit more work ;-)

Smiffy gives up toys without a growl, plays 'nicely' and is really being a charmer out on a walk, dogs and kiddies alike...all told, we are really made up with our new addition...and the two sets of parents are really chuffed and trying to book 'dog sittings' already...

Hope all is going well with the other inmates...Karen, the lead will be in the post, along with some treats for Smiffys former neighbours...

Photos to follow!

Long day already!

Hi All,

Well, its been a long day for Smiffy already...up and toilet break on the green at 6, urban walk at 8, left home alone after breakfast at 9 and after an hour of guarding the house, there was pogo'ing, cuddles and greetings and an inspection of the shopping...

Just time for a brush (with mid brush cuddle), a chew (with mid chew cuddle) and a scrap with a rope toy (amazingly, with a mid scrap cuddle!)...and now its sunbathing time.

With Smiffy like this, I can get on with some work! Well, once I've finished on here of course!

All the best

Errmmmm, well, he still cries but doesn't bark and stress as badly...give it another week or so and I'm sure he'll be as fine as he's going to be...I have to say tho, given his excellent manners, I can take him with me a lot more than I thought I would be able to!

Great that things are improving  - always remember he can do it, but just prefers not to Evil or Very Mad The more times it happens and then you come back ( cheers ) the more acceptable it will become.

I am probably going to be contradicted here but I do think some time alone is good. They can relax, rather than keeping an eye on you the whole time Wink

I think you are probably right...its odd getting used to the 'shadow' again...

Smiffy is staying with my mum and dad today as I've got a couple of meetings to go to...be a nice break of routine for him, and another lap to settle down on.

A historical walk yesterday, Smiffy met the statue of Nelson which is on his regular walk...

And showed scant regard for our Navy history on the ramparts!

OK, best get my suit on...so Smiffy can put hair all over it ;-)

A grand day out...

Hi All, well...we're now moved to the rehomed part of the blog and it feels a more certain and permanent place to be!

Smiffy had a big day on Sunday, a shorter than normal morning walk was followed by a trip out in the car to the Queen Elizabeth Country Park to meet and greet an old friend...and get some paperwork out of the way with ;-)

With the paperwork (and some treats and cuddles) completed, we had a lovely walk around the country park...Smiffy was a very interested and well behaved chap. This was followed by a stop at the parents house for a drink and another wee walk down by the harbour...and the claiming of a new 'fave' stick...

The afternoon was a 'calming down' time, lots of cuddles and relaxing was had by all, the sun was lovely when we saw it! The evening was ended off with a lap (for Smiffy) and a cup of tea and a newspaper (for Heather!).

All told, a great day and now we have our Smiffy as a constant pal...I'll be strong today and leave Smiffy home alone for an hour or two...Regards to the other pals of Smiffy...

first month report

Hi All,

Well, we've had a month of being Smiffied...and still loving it!

Behaviour is very good, the terrier nature (once you've got used to the growls and character etc) is great fun and Smiffy is gaining a wide circle of 'friends' on the Portsmouth walks.

Smiffy is getting a bit better at being left (still doesn't like it) and is increasingly vocal when the door is knocked...sounds like a fierce chap but all he wants to do (as he's demonstrated a number of times) is to just find out who is the other side, and give them a welcome! Smiffy is still well behaved at night time, settling well in his bed, only venturing up onto our bed when invited...

Smiffy is relaxing into his new life and takes up a 'guard' position at the top of the stairs when one of us is up there...

Cuddles are still part of smiffys plan and needs, very affectionate little chap and I had forgotten how happy a pooch makes you feel...

Play time is good fun, a bit of rough and tumble and he's a strong wee man, he enjoys breaks from the games and a bit of affection...and from time to time, he loves having a rask...takes him about half an hour to get through one...followed by a long snooze!!!

We'd best get on, Smiffy has had a couple of long walks this last few days and has just wolfed (or terriered down) his dinner...so that means a snooze (which is almost over) and a slow wander around Old Portsmouth...lovely...and perhaps he'll get to take up position under a table at his local again!!!

All the best to all

An update

Hi all,

Its been a long time since the last post so as the sun is out and Smiffy is snoozing in the garden, I thought I'd give a little update.

Smiffy has been going from strength to strength...walks are becoming ever calmer affairs...we've got the confidence to let him off the lead with a group of other dogs and he enjoys about 10mins of running and tumbling with them, at which point he comes back and stays close. Meeting dogs on the lead is now OK, as long as they don't bounce up to him dominantly...then he gives a little snarl!

Kids, well, still not too confident and we keep him on the lead when out and about and keep a close eye on him. Our God-daughters have visited and Smiffy did enjoy the attention, after they followed the rules and ignored him until he came to them...lots of stroking and patting...and after an hour of that he took himself to bed for a break ;-)

Being left is getting easier, he's alot better and it is nice to come back to a great welcome...even if I have only been gone for 5 minutes!

Right, I'd best get on, lots of things to do...will update soon!

HMS (Heather, Mike and Smiffy ;-))

PS, this next one isn't Smiffy...but made me titter none the less!

Doh!

Well, I guess some problems were inevitable!!!

Yesterday we had a bit of a mad day...Smiffy has been a bit itchy and irritable for the last couple of days, we found a flea a few days before so treated him with Frontline however he still chewed the side of his tail raw...

The usual lick/itch cycle ensued so I deployed 'non itch' wipes to stop this...I've done this before  Wink

Sadly tho, yesterday, after an early walk and a hot day a pal came around that Smiffy was excited to see...once he'd been greeted, my pal and I were talking and Smiffy went upstairs, where he destroyed his bed...I went up and told him off and was greeted with teeth and snarls...suprised, but he had been getting more agreesive this last couple of weeks.

When I took the bed to put it in a bin bag (yep, it was that bad!), I got a bite on the hand, when I pushed him away, another and finally he was 'persuaded' to go out into the garden to cool off...

A couple of things shocked me...the speed of the switch and the speed of the reaction!

A call to Lyne (thank you again) about bringing him back (I've never had a dog draw blood before!) and some time for both of us to cool off (my car was in for MOT so I couldn't go then. I left Smiffy in the garden and went for a walk to collect my thoughts.

I decided to take him to the vet for a second opinion on the raw area on the tail to see if that could 'annoy' a dog to that extent...She thought the irritated area was probably fox mange (a scabies for dogs/foxes) and that front line wouldn't treat that, also that the last couple of years, front line has lost some of its effectiveness, especially in areas where there are lots of domestic dogs being walked...

Also was that there was a bit of temperature and that generally (as I know), Smiffy is a delightful little pooch! I have had a day of turmoil but the advice of the vet was...
1) Pills and Stronghold to treat the irritation
2) A reduced 'workload' for Smiffy (more relaxation until he gets better)s
3) See if his temperament improves over a few days...

Well, bang on cue, Smiffy has returned to a much chastened state, not scared but warey, very attentive and back to his normal 'happy chappie' state...

Still concerned a bit but things are MUCH better, the tablets seem to be having an effect and applying the strong hold seems to have turned off the 'itch tap'. Smiffy is getting back to his old self, leaving me with more uncertainty about him in public and with the god daughters (who he was great with a week before).

Lessons learned...well, stronghold, not frontline for Smiffy, don't let him roll where I know foxes hang out at night, and when he's 'really snarling', don't believe the dog whisperer...give him some space to calm down before following up on the pack leader thing...

Well, I never thought owning a terrier would be 'easy', I am a little startled how much fight can be in such a little dog!!! but I guess that character is part of the appeal!

I've always had collie/x's/lurchers X 3 bitches up until 18 months ago and they had their fair share of issues which we learnt from, grew with and we loved them unreservedly.  But a lot of the stuff that worked with them went out the window when we got our Pattie boy Tex and I think he is a fairly easy terrier by all accounts! But managing a terrier is a whole different ball game - it's about giving them space to be those cheeky little terrier characters that we so love and also managing them without them even realising it - not over-managing Wink  Entertaining and rewarding nonetheless and once you've got it cracked you won't ever look back.   Hang on in there, take as much guidance as you can and before you know you will be out the other side wondering what it was all about  Wink
smiffys pals

yep...understood!

Hi all, yep, understood and thanks...and yes Nichole, part of the turmoil is he will wind up one second and then melt your heart the next...even the vet said he was about the cutest (and fittest) JRT she'd seen in years!

I'll hang in there and keep learning, wonderful walk today where Smiffy showed his fab side...trusted him off the lead and he was ace, even coming back from a beheaded squirrel (it wasn't him!) that some crows were having for breakfast...he did this on the first call, and walked to heel off the lead for a short distance until something else had grabbed his attention...

What a star! I think if I had something itching and couldn't scratch it, I'd be 'less than my normal self', lets see what happens next!
nicole

I really miss those walking days, the best fun wiz had was in a field in the morning that was jam packed of crows, terrier heaven to be let of the lead and let them fly.
