Sam - Border CollieThis is Sam. He is a 10 year old Border Collie who came over from Ireland.
He was a working Border Collie, but when he started to slow down the farmer was going to shoot him. Sam is good with other animals (excellent with other dogs and takes no notice of cats) and will be assessed with small caged animals. He is also very well behaved, mostly because when he wasn't working he was tied up in a kennel. Therefore, although he was a working Collie, he isn't nutty by any means and comes up to you tail wagging and wanting a fuss. Sam had a blood test and his liver enzymes came out as higher than they should so he may need special food at some stage in the future. Sam has been neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. If you can offer him a home please let me know.

Poor, poor Sam.  He went to the vets today and had his second jabs and microchip. He was given some Tramadol as these don't affect his liver unlike Metacam/Rymadil. They are tablets that ease his arthritus and is also a pain killer. His artritus is caused by him being out in all weathers and working extremely hard for his owner, sleeping out in the elements and having little shelter throughout his life.
I asked the vet to give him a once over and apart from the arthritus he is fine. Psycologically though he is so sad. He obviously wants to go home and is missing what he has known for the last ten years. We find it hard to make him understand that he is allowed indoors. In fact today I found him outside laying in the rain fast asleep. I guided him indoors and he immediately placed himself on his blanket in front of the radiator. If only he could understand that the person that he is pining for wanted to put a bullet in his brain.

Ah poor little mite. Green Lipped Mussel Extract is good for arthritis in dogs - see article - can also be bought in combination with glucosamine for dogs ...

I am going to get him some Glucosomine and Chondrotine. I think that does the same thing.
For the first time since he got here, this morning he came and put his head on my lap for a fuss. Such a lovely moment, ruined by the puppy pooing on the floor.

If the pill is mixed with the food, it could be chewed and lost in the teeth. A liquid form on the other hand, can be poured directly over the food for a guaranteed acceptance by the dog. Sam had a nice long bath today and he actually enjoyed it. It took three rinses to get the muck off and the first lot ran off brown and the same colour as manure. Now he is a beautiful rich brown colour AND his ruff is actually white!  Not a yellowy, orangey colour!
Here are some pics of him and very concerned Frankie-boy who has spent ages helping to dry him off by licking him all over.

Border ColliesHe looks like a lovely tri-colour collie. My very first dog was a Welsh Border Collie and very loyal. I also rescued a grey/white Border puppy many years ago and he took to Obedience amazingly. Once they love you they are great companions. I could have cried thinking of him outside in the rain. Farmers are not good owners and those dogs work so hard for them.If I hadn't adopted my 2 lovely geriatric ladies |I would be putting in a bid for him. Good Luck |
