Sad new member....

Hello.
New member here, joining with tears in my eyes. I lost my JRT X rescue dog after 7 years by my side on Sunday. Cancer got her & I am devastated. She was just too young, and she was my best mate.

She was found in a hedge in Plymouth covered in mange, I got her from a centre in Devon when she was 5 months old. She turned into the sweetest (but typical terrier) little girl you could ever meet...
She fetched the post, danced for biscuits, pulled pebbles from the sea as big as her head, chased the horse, slept under the duvet, dug to Australia looking for rats, stole cat food, bared teeth when disturbed whilst sleeping, rolled in fox poo, stood 1/4 inch from your face on waking, located tennis balls on command, pulled up roots, refused to come in, stood with a paw in the air, and looked at you with one ear up - and one ear down.
She will never be replaced, but I am hopeful another rescue JRT will be found on these pages one day.

Regards to everyone

Helen

Oh she sounds like she was a joy!  Little Miss Terrier ...you either delight in their querks or dispair..welcome to the arena with those who delight.  She is still with you and will give you the wink  Wink  when she wants you to offer all your skills and enthusiasm to the next little one who needs you.

Hi Helen, so sorry to hear of your loss.  What was her name?  Your description of her shows just how much you loved her.  Treasure the memories  - I'm sure she loved you too.  She has shown you how special a dog/friend relationship is and later, when the time is right and you are ready, you will go on to home another different, but characterful best friend who will also be special ... afterall, they all are in their own ways.

Welcome to our pack.
Ruthi

What a lucky girl she was to have such a loving mummy.

I know it hurts, but I am sure the right new dog will come along for you.

Thanks for the welcome everyone Smile

Sharon, her name was Spanner - not very ladylike I know, but she was such a daft idiot, she was just a spanner! It suited her.

I would love to post a picture for you all to see, but I have had trouble on forums before - I just can't seem to do it!!! I have a photobucket account and still get stuck....

Hi Helen, she kept you amused when you had her and she has just amused me with her name!  Cute!

If you want to e-mail me her photo I will put it up for you

I miss her so much, she went everywhere with me.... I've added a few - I couldn't help it!!! I think the one titled No1.jpg shows how beautiful she was. I have about 400 other pictures of her! It was tough to narrow it down.

Just look at her face!

Love Helen x

I think everyone will agree she was a special girl:

Thank you Sharon. You posted them all!!!

The pain of losing her is almost too much to bear at times, but I will be eternally grateful I knew her, as it was fate I even ended up with her at all.

I wasn't really looking to own a dog, I had 4 cats - I used to just visit the rescue centre when in Devon to take dogs for a walk. One day one of the staff just happened to mention her and showed me her in the isolation pen - she was all bald from mange, and wasn't ready for re-homing, but her little face melted my heart. A month later I was visiting Devon again and before I set off SOMETHING made me pick up the phone and enquire about her. The receptionist said she had been reserved and was about to be picked up..... Then a voice in the background said "Ooh, you talking about Petal? They phoned up just now and took the reserve off her" Someone had just walking past the phone and overheard the conversation!! I drove straight there.

Just look at that face.

You can all see why I loved her so much now.

What a wonderful story and fantastic photos,  I have a six month old wire haired parsons cross, and all the things you have said about spanner made me smile as they are just the things he's doing.  Im so sorry that you lost her, but so glad you found her when you did and gave her some stable years of love and happiness.

Spanner is the BEST name i have ever heard! She looks like she was such a lovely lady too! Sorry that you have lost her but welcome to the RR family xx

Thanks Jed....

3 months on and I'm still sitting here with tears streaming down my face having re read the posts.

The rescue centre I got Spanner from called me 7 weeks ago and said they'd had an 8 month JRT come in... They took one look at him, then looked at each other and said "Ok, who's going to call Helen"

I went to see him and took him immediately - I called him Spud and he's a devil and an angel all rolled up into one.

He's filled a massive hole, but in some ways makes me miss Spanner even more.

Again, I would post a pic, but I am clearly never going to master the art of uploading.....

Thanks Tina.

I only found out AFTER I'd named her there was a cartoon on tv called Space Boy and Spanner - Spanner was the dog!
I was a bit annoyed actually because I thought it was unique... Especially at the vets one day when a Westie was called in by the same name. The woman said it was because of the cartoon!

And here is Helen's new dog Spud ...

Spud looks just perfect..
HelenC

Thanks Lynne,

The little toad has spent all evening stealing coal and chamming it up on the rug, he's now lying 'spuds up' on the sofa. No doubt he's saving all his energy for the 4am chase-the-cat-across-the-bed session....

LOL!  Can tell you are in love big time!  Smile

What a great little dog, I'm so glad you've found happiness once again, losing your greatest friend is dreadful and the pain runs so deep but heals quickly when you find another just as good.  I wish you and your new addition the best of everything.

HI Helen

I am new on this site but have been reading your posts and wonderful stories about spanner and spud, I lost my terrier cross Wizard to cancer very unexpectedly on the 15th July (he was 10), a month ago today and still cry every day no one can explain how it feels, but I feel as if my whole world has come to a standstill, he was a special boy and had loads of character as do they all, his favourite pasttime was to chase the neighbours cat who would sit on the wall at the end of the garden and tease him endlessly.
I share your pain but am so excited on your new friend, very cute indeed,....
