Ronnie, Boat Dog First ClassWe're back from our first (10 week) cruise in France with Ronnie.
To say he didn't get off to a very good start is an understatement. At the entrance to our marina there is a large barge with a very big mastiff-cross-GSD (Lucy) in residence who was terrified of our late GSD, Kilo, and never approached our boat. When she saw Kilo's successor, she came loping over to have a look. Ronnie, as ever, was keen to meet and greet. As soon as I put Ronnie down, Lucy went for him. The resulting damage was scarey to say the least
taken 4 days after the visit to the vet.
Ronnie bounced back with the help of tea crea cream and 80euros worth of antibiotics and veterinary care.
8 days later
He was a bit wary of other dogs from then on (they didn't speak English for a start and smell different) and I was worried that his 'show them you're not a pushover' stance would lead to trouble. After a couple of weeks cruising, he began to enjoy life aboard (especially being taken to restaurants) and discovered the joys of playing in the river.
8th week in France
We've been back a week and he's back to his normal happy self, confidently meeting other dogs with no posturing. But - he's already gone awol 3 times in the local stream - hiding and drowning his ball is now a favourite passtime. I think I'll have to have him fitted with one of those devices that peeps when you want to find missing keys.

I'm forever grateful to the marvelous start RR gave him and the security and early training he received with Helen.

Ronnie has just celebrated his 2nd birthday. What a great little fella he is. No signs of ever chasing rabbits, his fixation is on his ball. Recall is fantastic, except when he's playing 'drown the ball' in the nearest water source.
Photo of the birthday boy proudly wearing his 'boat dog, first class' medal.
He was given the best possible chance when RR took him and his brother, Reggie, into care in 2007. I and my 'im indoors' are forever grateful.
