Rescue Remedies Diary 21 May - 25 Oct 2009Second Year Diary
Picture of the day
Jay with his new hair cut enjoying a walk in the countryside
Sad Story of the Day
Saidie a red Staffie was homed from a rescue 4yr ago at the age of 2..unneutered; vax'd and unchipped. Intercepted her owner who's father died and needed to go the Spain, on route to the vets to be put-to-sleep. Daughter refused to offer us the price it would have cost for vet consultation and PTS. Begrudgingly agreed £20 and Emma jumped in her car to collect.
Fun Story of the day
Sadie's (Bailey) new owners buying her her own sofa as they have heard she is used to sleep on a sofa with her fosterer.

Saidie and Roxy enjoying each other's company; the sun and FREEDOM at last. How loved are they already!
Sad Story of the Day Ruby at 11 months old was accidently run over by her owners who then couldn't afford or didn't think £1000 was viable on their dog's life and walked away having paid a put to sleep fee. Vet surgery raised funds, transported her 2 hours to special unit and back to repair the damage. She comes into foster with Jilly Allen when she is ready.
Fun Story of the day
Huxley Terrier Rescue Fella apparently soon learnt to climb the tree in the back garden to view the cats on the other side. His 2 sons learnt this from him in their first 2 months and were rescued found clinging tight to a branch 12 foot high and crying. There you are to safety. 20 mins later the same cries and the same rescue procedure put into operation. Terriers...Treeriers

Sad Story of the Day
Harley found tied up to a tree with a collar and chain lead. He was there for at least 4 hours before it was clear he had been abandoned.
Fun Story of the day Harvie enters a very caring home and begins to rip off branches from hedge then spies a tree branch. A few attempts and he is hanging from it then it is half broken and finally snaps. He then breaks a piece off bit by bit. His new potential owner busys herself collecting the parts as they are precisely discarded. She looks up into the tree and says ..It's a shame it isn't older as we could have hung a big tyre up for Harvie to play with! I'm thinking I hope this tree grows to be older!

Fun Story of the day Marlis exfamily who used to live in a flat now have moved and although they still dont have the right circumstance for Marli wanted to help one of our dogs as they now have a lovely garden and rural setting. Shadow has had a sad life and was down in the dumps in the kennels. Sad Story of the Day
Oreo is a 1 yrs old Staffie cross who has grown up with another staffie pup. Oreo has always been spirited and sadly killed a cat at the age of 6 months. Now both staffies have matured, they had a massive fight and Oreo has lost his home because of it. Another staffie booked in to be put to sleep and the vet has pleaded with the family for time and the vet's endeavours have found him a rescue place with us.
Fun Story of the day Toby my red Fell terrier has a working background. The last few days he has been buzzzy. We have a scrub heavy with perfume and heavy with bees. There he is most of the day hovering around, watching, waiting then diving to catch one with his mouth. And he has knocked some down and its surprising when he then puts his nose to them on the ground, fascinated, how he hasn't ended up with a red nose!

Sad Story of the Day
Need to find alternative to current kennels for our staffies as the manager is only happy with our business when boarder numbers down. Asking us to go down to 3 for August. Anyone know of a small holding or farm area in Surrey area for us to try and set up a 'safe area for our work'
Fun Story of the day Sam who organised the sponsored walk event fedback to the manager that having been told we were the only event we were actually one of 3, and we were inhibited slightly by the other's activities. Sam, rightfully so, was given our £50 back..that is a week's kennelling for a dog!

Sad Story of the Day
Dog lover warden told off for not putting his dogs to sleep...we are taking the dog in question. But then they'll be the next. Callous officials..kids are so protected in law..dogs are treated like vermin. Hum Man's best friend..hate to think what happens to his worst friend.
Fun Story of the day Dee mis-sends an email telling me the reasons why Eddie isn't the right dog for me, and she is now looking out for 'that dog' . I bounce it back..Dee you know I'm only allowed 6 dogs in the house (alloud being the actual word..and being a dogaholic) and you know I already have an Eddie-ache Actually he is SUCH a EXCEPTIONAL SPECIAL dog could home him anywhere ..providing he has company at this phase of his development.

See fun story below
Sad Story of the Day Did our usual neutering run today but with 2 sorry souls..Saidie and Frank. Saidie turns out to be going through a false pregnancy hence her rather protruding teets, she also has a touch of kennel cough so careful spay and has come back with 2 medication courses. Frank's skin was scrapped and tested..he has been suffering from 2 types of mange. The one we have treated has nearly cleared..that was the contagious one. He however still has another irritant mite which we can't start to treat for a month as the treatments clash. The first treatment having just been treated again yesterday, has to clear from his body. And with the stress of the situation Frank started to bleed from his neutering op. site. He went back to the kennels with a tight bandage in the form of bright swimming trunks of a bandage. Poor Frank..all the vet staff loved Saidie and Frank!
Fun Story of the day Yes just look at the above picture and try to imagine what Alyson's team thought as they saw this sea of feathers in the corridor this morning and then looked at STANLEY! Oh he did have a great evening last night

Spud is becoming Victorious...which means Victoria has taken Spud into a sacred foster place. Spud has grown so much since this picture..matured emotionally and physically.
Sad Story of the Day Tiger Lily..we know you have had a sad past..you found yourself to our doorstep last time pregnant and in poor health. We cared for you and homed you. Then that home threw you out ; not even to transport you to your place of care; no consideration of your feelings. We feel dreadful... had you not been coming back to us other rescues may have just put the phone down knowing they wouldn't be able to collect within the hour; you would have lost your life. Thanks to Sharon's husband John and her friends Chris and Chris you're having a lovely time before you return to your friends at the kennels tomorrow. Inexcuseable that this could have happened to one of our dogs, and happen to YOU. Staffies give their all and are dumped continually..breaks your heart.

Ruby nears day of release ... into Jilly's care
Sad Story of the Day Panda came into our care today found stray covered in puncture wounds which were infected and bald patches on him; obviously sleeping on concrete. Found with an aggressive dog who had to be put to sleep .. who had obviously attacked Panda. Lovely licky nature, so don't think he has been used for guarding. He was over weight, but has slimmed down nicely. Kennel owner not charging us for his keep. Good vibes with people and dogs; she wants him to go to a good home. She has been waiting for a rescue to take him on for months, but no action.

Sad Story of the Day Winnie arrived today. Found stray in season 1 month ago. Was very distraught in kennels but begining to settle. Highly emotional and her demeanour just shouts - this dog has had so little given to her in her short life...she is so needy, she is so bereft. How can you just abandon a dog who so obviously is so dependent.
Fun Story of the day Met Phoenix a tan and white staffie cross, one of Niall's dogs again today. He was in the kennels for a brief spell. This time he bought a charming little friend with him, Ruby. We offered to neuter them both as they are now a couple and will be going to live together. They spent the day in vets in the same kennel and like 2 little love birds, they travelled in the same crate home.

Rodders The tallest of the Brindles; The funniest and see that backside sway on greeting!
Sad Story of the Day Every sad story is a Staffie story- which one tonight? Wallace the 6 month pup left tied up outside a shop; Tanzy the 8-9 month Staffie who was abandoned a few days after she had her pups; or Carli who has sat in a kennels and no she wasn't sold and noone came forwards after 2 weeks so she is on the list to be put to sleep, as no money in her! ?The others sold could pay for her delay. Can't see how the person runs dog business is can deal death. Sorry very angry tonight!
Fun Story of the day Tim our vet has revised our costs to make them affordable for us. Is now coming to the kennels every fortnight to vax. dogs to save the dogs a long journey and us time; is taking leaflets on to their stall at the local summer fair next weekend. And has offered to put our websites linked to their new website being launched next week!
If you want to cheer yourselves up, have a look at the 3 guestbooks on each of the 3 websites. It often does the trick for me.

Yes Murphy..our little man. Our kennel staff would be bereft if his home came up, but celebrating would last thru to the next day! Mr Personality!
Sad Story of the Day Very difficult times for us...we can not continue to save the number of dogs we do as funds have vanished in large kennel bills. Also kennels are now filling for the summer, so may God hold our hands whilst we have to say 'sorry we can't help, this dog must die for want of a rescue space'. Rescue Remedies has been the last hope for soooo many dogs. Totally dependent on movement of dogs into homes to bring our numbers and bills down and allow a chink for another. Oh for a benefactor!
Fun Story of the day Little Roxy came out of her kennel with the air, "for Godsake come on, I've been waiting for this". Jumped into the car, eyes set on the front window; so keen to see the journey behind her so her little life could blossom.

Been thinking of Jaspa a lot today as if Eddie goes into foster Jaspa will become my next foster. Lovely boy.
Sad Story of the Day Sad day for us as it has taken Dee, Secret Squirrel and myself so many hours to get terrierrescue email working. There must be a new word in the english language relating to "rupturing your spleen" when computers and their software problems remain out of reach! All functioning as of 2.30 pm and questionnaires for terriers flowing again!
Fun Story of the day Dee and John rescued Missie 18 months ago. She was a very damaged (emotionally) Dobie. It has taken great patience to bring her through in winning trust of any description. John has put a lot of time into offering her activities and training. Yesterday he went a little bolder and introduced 'down' as a concept further to 'sit, click and treat'. Missy achieved it but didn't quite grasp what she had achieved. She then enlivened, moved to different areas performed a posture and immediately sort eye contact and rushed over for 'treat?'. Oh yes she got in on the 4th. Dee said she watched with tears rolling down her eyes to see Missy relating and trying so hard to earn that treat!
Beginning to work on statistics for 2009. Bits and bob day but no movement; no homings.Organised neutering runs for this week and foster movements. Heavy week ahead at least 7 dogs for neutering.Panda, Suki and Oreo (staffies we are supporting) Deakon, Bobby, Bella and Rosco

Marli so controlled, good with people, children and so good with dogs. A lovely lively personality
Sad Story of the Day Oh Bobby his energy is so high, so desperate to please but quite random in its attempt. He needs a garden with a mature couple to offer him the time and skill to express and tame his energy. Get the impression he has never had this opportunity; walks were probably a weekly trip to the park of leaping up for sticks and jumping at his lead. Bobby you are just at the start of your journey..may have to take him in as my foster as he is young enough to blend with dogs but very unskilled for his age. He needs the work NOW
Fun Story of the day Walking Alfie with Simon and first statement was 'hum just a kennel dog he has lost his personality being locked away for 2 yrs...I said nothing inwardly smiled. 10 mins into the walk and Alfie had done his business and began to relax into the walk. Turns around and smiles..Simon engages. 10 further mins and Alfie is showing Simon all his training..which paw this one or this one? Cuddles develop at the next step and Alfies sad loving eyes impact on Simon. As we approach the kennels its 'Such a lovely dog can't believe he has been in kennels for so long.

Sad Story of the Day A dog warden called me today with a dialemma, a young 18 month old staffie bitch found stray with a lead, collar and muzzle on. She was picked up by the police and had a swip at a colleague on collection in her terror. Kennel staff afraid of her, she is reactive to dogs. Dog warden says in her view she is frightened but what rescue would take her on; who can offer her the time, skills and love she needs. Very unusual for a staffie to be growley around people so is she being judged whilst she goes through an ordeal? Does she follow thru and put her sleep or give her longer time with very little chance of a rescue place coming up in the height of summer. We have so many dogs all I can say is call me tomorrow and we can talk it through further.
Fun Story of the day Always so lovely to call in at Gatwick and Croydon kennels and met volunteers ... PaulaK and Liz (Just Springers) there with Alyson, Elaine and Tina at Gatwick ... Ali, Jessica and Marie in with Emma and Liz. Lovely buzz for the dogs.

Fun Story of the day My friend Lemon came about after Stu came home with (apart from other stuff) a lemon. Pooch decided that as it was yellow, it must be a tennis ball. Hillarious watching him parading around with it, with a slight bitter squint in his eye. Took it everywhere with him for a couple of days, in fact it lastest longer than a tennis ball!! Sad to say though.....'lemon' has now gone to that great G & T in the sky. x x Pooch's Mum

Sad Story of the Day Bruno's story is one of the saddest ... because we know it, how many stories do we not know!
Fun Story of the day Bella on the way to the vets sitting in the front seat of the car. She kept an eye on the road, another on the pavement and her third eye on me. If I stopped at traffic lights and looked over at her fine; prolonged look and she was called into her Staffie duties and had to lean over and lick, lick. On the way back from being spayed she lay low. Got home to the kennels and went in the paddock did her little wee and walked over to her gate. In her kennel and straight to bed ... "give me a call in the morning ...make sure I don't over sleep nite, nite!"

Fun (or sad)Story of the day Glenn, like Toby (my own dogs) are interested in flies about the place. Then in discussion the family felt they weren't quite ready. 8 am this morning they are back on the phone..yes they're up for her..they're in the car and she is in their arms..Maddy is rightfully named she is a bit of a shock! Staffie x Burmese Mountain Dog!

Sad Story of the Day Thinking of Minx. All he saw was his mum go out through the dog flap. Never to be seen again. I wanted to walk him but the kennel staff were too busy. Tomorrow I'm sure he'll get special attention ... poor Minx. Thinking of him tonight.
Fun Story of the day Nancy found her home ... I really didn't think it was going to happen. She showed herself to be an all round, loving, gentle dog ... won over her family and Toby. Everyone is so happy. What fun we have!

OMG Here is Holly who was found 6 months ago is a 'disgusting exploited' state and has cost Nikki (Epsom Canine Rescue) thousands of pounds in vet bills to get her eyes right; her ears sorted; her spayed after multiple caesarians. She still hasn't lost her undercarriage but oh does she look different. And now she emerges as the beauty she was and has always been. Oh yes she is so ready for her home.
Sad Story of the Day Sad Monday of frantic calls ..I've taken 2 heart rendering terrier calls both we have committed to but can't take in now. Emma had the 'dire' Staffie calls she was beaten down in the end, the 5 th call, couldn't say no, despite the fact she is bursting at the seams.

Rodders becomes our Staffie Rescue dog of the month!
Sad Story of the Day Silly lady called me..8 yr old Staffie has to go because her new Staffie puppy is making it growl. No she has no feeling for it as it was her partners who moved in 10 months ago and left it behind. She lived with it for that time with no bonding I presume. How many times are we seeing this "out with the old in with the new" Are these people numb skulls?..no don't answer that!

Sad Story of the Day Dodee a Parson's Jack Russell taken to the vets to be put to sleep. Lady who rescues dogs agreed to take him. She knows he has been hit regularly and hasn't been walked for years. Mixed with her dogs fine but day three he snapped at her getting out the car and also went to go for one of her dogs. She can't put him in kennels and doesn't have anyone to offer him the time he needs. Too many people suggested...PTS We are the only ones that understood him and so we save him. Dodee comes to us on Friday as we are his last chance saloon.
Fun Story of the day Images: Mayhem tonight lots of activity, fractious pack, guarding and of course I've been on the phone/at the computer and not really aware what it was all about other than I'm more vocal than usual! Ahh now I see ... a steady stream of soft toys have been appearing on the scene ... via "Eddie the toy bringer". Hubby left the gate open upstairs into the toy store.

Sad Story of the Day Stella came on to our books today. Found stray 9 months ago and homed in with a identical Patterdale bitch and blind lurcher (Her finders sister once released by the dog warden). However as so happens with bitches they grow up so well then phow! Well they have gone Phow too often and so Stella has her suitcase packed and relunctantly is looking for a terrier home with her families true blessings and great sadness.

He planned to read in a private moment when suddenly his mother appeared confronting him..'The Staffordshire Bull Terrier' Have you gone mad! Sad Story of the Day Ky complex story around him being 'found or taken to the vet twice in one month'..last time the people on his chipped details just didn't want him back. So the vet was left with PTS or try for a rescue place. Luckily the dog warden came forwards to help. We are paying for his medical needs and trying to find a new home for him.
Fun Story of the day Rescue Remedies made their presence felt at Battersea again today. We may have to rename our rescue! Great outcome met loads of new people and some of our dogs made it to support the stall. £164 raised pays for Jess's kennel this month, she thanks you.

Poppy and Abby. Abby was homed as a pup and then the breeder retired and contacted Abby's owners to see if they would take Poppy, Abby's litter sister on, both aged 9. They are now 14 and their owner is in his 90's. We visited, assessed and vax'd them both. They are booked in for a dental on Thursday ... then at my suggestion, their owner is holding on to them and if he at anytime feels either he can't cope or they need more ... we will take them on, whatever age. He was delighted with the insurance policy! So pleased not to give them up.
Sad Story of the Day Jasper on rainbow bridge the sadest of stories, stolen and then killed by dog fighters. Sometimes you have to face evil and not deny it. He is safe now.

Sad Story of the Day Long debate today over a dog we heard of that bit its owner hand 3 times holding on and shaking, not letting go. How Joanne and I tried to understand and see a way through, as the owner was in A & E. In conclusion knowing we were its last chance, we decided on the account of 6-7 factors its size; its age; its breed type; its history; its response in the time; severity of injury; currently family circumstance; scarity of resources...sadly the dog had made a fatal error.

Sad Story of the Day The family we homed Eddie with have taken in 'oldies' for many years. 6 months ago they were asked to help a Staffie pup who had been found stray in a bad condition. They found it was walking funny and ran tests on it and as it grew older it began to fit. These became severe and sadly he was put to sleep. He opened their hearts to Staffies and they have adopted Eddie and Bobby (a Staffie x pup) from Battersea in their Staffie pups memory and are so delighted to have been introduced to the breed type.

Jess's walk in the Park...note the bag...NEW LOOK! Jess New look @ Jess
| Quote: | Pup picked up as a Crawley Borough Council stray a few days ago, a little b/w lurcher pup - 12 weeks old. dumped in woodland. Injuries to jaw and eye consistent with being violently kicked. Possible parvo. Foaming at mouth. Vets went above and beyond, and haven't charged the council for much of what they did. Possible long term damage. 2 days in the vets on a drip, and not parvo, but total worm burden. Heard the story a few days ago (as still off sick) and agreed that if push came to shove I would have him here. Not ideal though as being one handed makes life very difficult.
Today i found out that Lisa (who fostered Cody) has sorted out a foster, who wants to keep him and has personally underwritten the cost of further vet fees, castration etc. and is arranged rescue back-up.
Pup currently named lucky is doing well.

It's getting late..night is drawing in. Ernie looks..is this the way home?
Thought of the day Are dogs not man's best friend..are they not so obviously dependent on their owners for their survival? How can a family have Simone, know she has go out or gone stray because she is in season and not gone looking; not visit the pound to find her. When contacted say they can't afford the reclaim fee of £140! Yes its a lot of money but anyone who runs a car; has a TV license; has a holiday; take aways or a meal out will see this in perspective= this is your 'child's' life. They turn their back in her hour of need. Lie down, rest your head on the pillow and the thought must come she might have been killed today. Is there no love in that heart; no conscience.

Picture to be changed once pictures of Chancers day out come in from Sarah C and Rob
Sad Story of the Day Our sad story always has a silver lining because we stand up and so are there for our dogs. Yes Frank and Tammy came into kennels, but what an opportunity they both have been given by devoted 'friends of our Rescue'. Benji came in, but no way did he deserve to lose his life - it made a change to help a Hound dog as opposed to a Pound dog. Bobby and Panda both 'nearly' got homes today, but because of the love shown and the very near possibilty WE all know their time is close.
Fun Story of the day Sharon R, Tina D, Belle's Mum and Moss plus were out today and Karen this afternoon shaking the tins! Dismay as the 'day' group arrived to find every complication present except weather. Sharon R said "you don't want to know what we had to do to get that money". Spare me the details, hope you are well ... just put it in the bank our vets will thank you later!

The work has just begun to allow her to recognise her job is simply to be 'the pet' Now we understand how she had her traffic accident

Graeme one of the 3 Yorkshire dogs who arrived yesterday..thin, bemused and so lovely. Graeme having 'hound' in his genetics stood and starred so often easy to capture a hint of his real beauty.
Meditation of the Day Somehow we are called to help our 'friends' dumped on city streets, found stray in country ditches, in cardboard boxes, in vets discarded as 'not perfect' or 'too terrier!', abandoned in boarding kennels. An innocent buy with composit traits which will never match the families skills or focus, the loss of 'home'; job; relationship or the new puppy doesn't get on with the old model. The skin problem, the vet bill. We see it all.

The "Girls" Daisy and Polly
Meditation of the Day Today the image was of London as a huge mass which throws out its discards. The last time I visited a dump I saw a huge bag thrown on 'landfill' with beautiful newish baby and children's clothes. The things people throw out without the thought for others. In our service we pick up the broken pieces and try to repair. We witness splendant loyality, 'the giving heart', the gentle eyes and the 'offered belly'. People turn and walk away without a second thought for the one who watches them go. But there is someone there who searches to find them safety, who offers comfort and reassures. Your next family will stick with you and always be your best friends.
Loved this "Xxxxx is doing well. is such a scamp. We have had a few problems with biting when he had a tick stuck in his foot (who got loose in the vets reception and caused chaos when he saw the muzzle coming too close and decided to do a runner [we went in to have our own muzzle fitted just in case he needed attention at home].Good job the cats were in cages or they would have needed burying not veterinary attention!) but the vet and I think he is still very insecure. Well, the vet does anyway. I think he does not like pain, his bone being taken away, having to do as he is told, being bossed by Boomer, being asked to get out of the car, being asked to get in the car, etc etc."

We rarely see the expectant exhiliaration of a family primed to travel 5 hours down the M1 to meet their new dog. (They leave 4am Saturday morning) Knowing Freddie, this excitement is well justified. Here is the 'picture' of Sally (Red Fell) before the picture of Freddie stating the families' 'true love'
Meditation of the Day Wednesday was a day of 'catching up'. Dee ploughing through questionnaires and myself reviewing terrierrescue dogs and writing their descriptions with Secret Squirrel' updating Terrierrescue. She engineered the website so people "Fill in the questionnaire!" We are still getting so many calls and emails enquiring about dogs WITHOUT filling our questionnaire. We DON'T have time and ask people only to contact once submitting the questionnaire. Jilly chasing up dog reserved to try and concluded adoptions
Didn't write the diary as such a late finish for me 2.45am and brain had gone. Coupled with a very early start the next day over to Guildford to collect Raj, Graeme and Karl for neutering...sorry

Picture of the day
Raj in the front of my car travelling back from the vets. See Drama of the day below!
Drama of the Day I will not be able to communicate the extent of the drama I had transporting our three lads Raj; Karl and Graeme to the vets but I'll have a go... I have a simple car with a small crate in the hatch; large crate on the back seat and usually I get to know a dog as a front passenger. Loading the 3 lads I decided to put Karl on the front seat, Graeme in the large crate and little Raj at the back. We set off and all seemed well though I could hear initial whimpering from the crated dogs. Karl was on a very short lead looped through the 'coat hanger' piece which restricted him climbing over my lap. All was well and Karl decided he wanted to lie which the small lead doesn't allow so I changed it to the longer lead and he settled. Off the M25 and we are now on the M3 and I look in my rear mirror shocked to see Raj's head appear above the crate.
My heart stopped a beat..I pulled over to the hard shoulder and put the flashing lights on thinking OMG I'm in deep trouble. By this time he was on top of Graeme's crate and fortunately neither were reacting..most of it was covered by a cloth. I grabbed Raj's collar which I had changed on Monday thankfully so was well fitted but not as tight as I needed it in this predicament. I was using my voice and my first major step was to place Karl back on the short lead so he was restricted. He wouldn't come into sitting he kept thinking I wanted him down. I had to try to get him re connected with one lose hand whilst having his collar with Raj moving in the other. Pleading with Fate it eventually happened..somehow I managed it. So now I could attend to Raj. I had to open the passenger door with fast traffic flying by and get him out SAFELY his life depended on it! I wound down the passenger window a little and then moved outside holding his collar with my right hand then transferring it to be held through the top of the window. Then I opened the door and scooped him up and lay him on the grass verge while I tried to regain my calm as my nerves were shot to pieces.
I opened the hatch and tried to put him in but NO WAY he wasn't going in. I then had to turn the crate around so the door was wide open and tried 3 times to get him in with that collar a tad too loose so holding his fur at the back of his neck. 4th attempt I managed it. Closed the door and turned the crate thinking HOW does he know to get out of this crate? So I had a muzzle to hand and I placed this as short strap with clip over the door and crate to prevent him freeing it again. He could chew it through but then I was now only 15 mins from 'my destination' All of a tremble I got back in the car and sped for the vets just amazed how lucky we all had been that none of the dogs had kicked off.
Got to the vets and decided to take Karl out first being the 'free dog' and also he was on the short lead so restricted. Got back to the car to find Raj in the drivers seat! I took him in and then came back to the car asking ?HOW Unbelievable the muzzle catch was open but not chewed through; the crate had been bent on the left side and his name disc was looped through the crate and hanging like a calling card. Raj definitely has HANDS! He damaged his face as you can see from the picture. Raj was on the front seat travelling back as quiet as a lamb.

Stories of the Day Cassie came back into kennels as she found a hedgehog nest in the garden and became obsessed. Freddie doing well but a swabble; ?overexcited on Clare coming home. Carol and Dylan both settling well in their new foster settings. Staffie home came up so xxlynne travelled to the kennels and received a call 10 mins off (50 mins into her journey) that the husband has now decided not yet! Couldn't not be there for Princess who lost her home yesterday and being kept in 'mums' back garden and being taken to the vets as nowhere for her to go. Collected and delivered to the kennels Bart's home and Carol's home surfaced today we think. Lorenzo not happy..he thinks Bart needs far more time

Bella (Sheba) and Princess These dear souls very nearly died today..bless them. They remain in the vets sleeping off the drama and hopefully will begin to feel better tomorrow.
Dramas of the Day
Bella (Sheba) had a cough and high temp yesterday was taken to the vet and placed on anti inflams. and antibiotics. This morning raging temp. and very distressed. Xrays, tests and drip..went seriously ill but began to perk up tonight a little with a tail-wag for Katie. Princess had been so well Olivia called this pm to say she had jumped up at the window and she noticed she had begun to bleed from her spay wound. We decided to rest her and apply a dressing. Called back 45 mins and she was well. 5 mins later she was dripping and permission was sort to take to the vets. She walked her 6 doors to her vets and as the vet touched the wound it gave way and poor Princess's insides began to fall out as the stitches just gave way. The vet immediately had to GA her and redo her spay site to save her life. We are so lucky this happened literally in the vets consulting room.

Our Staffies just shine in Croydon..Here's Becky having a laugh today!
Stories of the day Dee and I experienced an earthquake on Monday and the repercussions wave through with certain 'forever' and foster homes wobbling. Freddie now being fostered and Clare and Tim standing by him until his next home found; MacTarn's family riding him through after a confidence building session with my Brandy and Fern; Bart's owner holding her nerve having been tutored by Labrador owner who was advising against continuing; Stanley's owners working with his separation anxiety engaging Dee and Helen's support. Cassie receiving training as often as our busy kennel staff can afford.
Our meditation on the week has been to take on a terrier you need nerves of steal; firm command with the alertness to avert 'trigger moments' during the settling in period, the time when the 'Jelly of Trust' is setting. Anyone that has a glimpse into my management of a 6 terrier pack understands you live on your wits and you remain in command. They learn to tolerate shared affection and 'excitable moments'.
A further meditation is where a muzzle is adopted it should then give the owner the confidence to promote and tutor harmonious social encounters. Muzzles don't mean avoidance and isolation; the opposite. The public need education to that fact. You manage situations rather than 'avoid', moving forwards with your command over the situation UNTIL the muzzle proves itself nolonger necessary. Oh yes Terrier ownership isn't an easy path; Staffie ownership is often easier but you have public prejudice to deal with!
Finally a lot of Dee's role is about logistics; co-ordinating and organising things to 'make it happen'

Simone the good dog that needs a home!
Brilliant photographers prowling our kennels currently and offering life lines to our dogs as their images explode on to websites.
Stories of the day So much of the pain and anxiety committing our lives to helping societies 'worthless' and showing their priceless status is unsaid. A dog we homed after careful vetting, the usual numerous calls, homechecking, yes delivery - the perfect match found to live with cats .. the delay in adoption then the insult of £30 adoption cheque. The claim of 'poverty as a OAP' when we saw the house, we saw the car. Sometimes you have to stand firm and say NO we will not give our dogs away and effectively dig deep into our personal pockets to hand you perfect on a plate. (Dee and I dont have holidays and rarely have meals out our money is needed for our dogs). We are averaging costs of £400 for every dog we take on. We will be calling our dog back and the hint of accusation of being money grabbing we will bounce the remark back as 'mean and lacking any identification with the plight of homeless dogs', but first we get our dog back. We will not be patronised, but yes we need to be patronised!

Through the day she did her growls of unsurity; her licks "oh I like you and all manner of trials" any milk?. She fell asleep and when she woke up she was a lot more relaxed about being in and relating to the pack. Our little staffie pups seem to have been heaven sent for our Honey
Slow time in terms of homing but aware this week has had to be about getting straight and preparation for the months ahead. Bring the homes on!...we're ready to rock (Almost )
