Penny Border Collie 08.08 Cobham
History: Bought from a Puppyfarm where conditions were poor. Raised in a busy family with 5 young children. Her Collie instincts are coming to the fore and has 'snapped' at visiting children on 2 accounts.
Salient points: 9 month Border Collie puppy and described as 'snappy' with strangers but trustworthy with 'her herd of 5 very young children'. Large busy family; toddlers upward; another dog, rabbit and lots of visitors. Needs Collie confident owners; formal training and calmer environment focused on her emergent needs.
Advert: Penny is a beautiful Border Collie, just 9 months old. Has been bought up with 5 children now 3-9 yrs, mum is expecting again. Penny is judged to be herdy and needs to learn to be calm when approached by strangers. She clearly needs a calmer environment with time put into her needs and help her through this transient period as she adapts her instinctual working traits into daily domesticated life. She needs a more predictable environment so she will then be able to attune and deliver more carefully gauged behaviour in return.
As pretty as a picture, Penny now requires a family who 'gets Collies' and has the skills to help her come through into life. She needs a tempo that channels her energy into skills, so adapts better and copes with a loving home environment. She has made mistakes and needs to unpack some of her stance. She is young and ready to engage her bountiful energy into constructive play; task and interaction. Penny has received love and care but her training is quite limited to a few basic commands. On meeting, our assesser concluded a calm, matured Collie pup who didn't display 'hyper' collie behaviour but obviously requires more attention devoted to her own needs that her current situation allows. She copes well living with a largely unpredictable stream of little people. We are looking for a confident 'Collie' home which can offer her skills and confidence so she can readapt and achieve successful encounters and measured trust. penny will then learn to succeed rather than fail.

Summer and I had the pleasure of seeing the lovely Penny today and took her out for a walk so we could get to know her a bit better. Had a lovely greeting from her and was very pleased to see us. We took her over the field that she backs onto. If she had her way she would of been off playing Football with the kids - loves footballs. She had a little lie down in the hope that they would come over to play, but sadly the kids didn't have the time as the scores were even and therefore very tense!
She walked well in the field but would of loved to of been off-lead and feel free to do her investigating. We walked Penny back the "road" way and she did show an interest, as Collies do, in cars passing by. Give her a little tug of the lead and come on Penny she would walk on, so will need experienced home that can help her and focus on more interesting things on her walk. She's a really clever girl and her owners appreciate this, and feel she is "bored" with the life she is getting now. I found her to be very aware we were out together and would come back for a cuddle and reassurance then off she would trot for another sniff.
When we arrived she was busy "herding" the Rabbit...
Her current owners and I would love to see her in a home where they can focus on "her" needs and give her all the love, care and exercise she so clearly needs. I really felt for her today. Penny is currently living with a little "boy" dog and this has helped her calm her when being left. She is a really pretty little girl.

Penny settling very well into her new home.
Needs lots of help with some of her more "collie" issues, traffic chasing and the like. But luckily has fell right on hers paws into a family that knows Collies and loves them and all their foibles.
Family particularly bowled over by Penny's very sweet and loving nature and are prepared for the long haul with lots of easy affection from Penny easing the way.

Penny is now spayed and chipped and adopted. 6 Months on she has settled really well considering how hyper and nervous she was. Well done to her owners. She came through despite her difficult beginnings.
