Maisie Small Collie Horam, East Sussex

Maisie came into our care yesterday. She was first vax'd.

She is a ginger and white little lady who isn't very happy in kennels but she has her life partner in her kennel now with her and we are looking for a home for them together. Emma will share her background with us. She is spayed and chipped.

Maisie is an 8 year old Border Collie who has lived as a pack of dogs for many years. The woman that she belonged to had alot of children and because of this was too busy to walk her dogs, so all Maisie had was a back garden to play in.
She settled into this life fine as it was all she really knew.

The owner decided to foster an elderly Jack Russell male and whilst she was out there was an incident in the home where the dog was attacked. It is unknown who the culprits were, but she took a guess at Maisie and Dillon...

I got the message that both dogs had to go from the home and being that Dillon was mine, he had a guaranteed place back at my rescue. Maisie was outstanding though and although she originally came from a large rescue organisation, they agreed that it was fine for another rescue to take her, especially if it meant that these two could be homed together. Dillon adores Maisie and she looks forward to seeing him every morning.
During the day Dillon comes to work with me and he shares a kennel with Maisie and that is when they are both most content.

Neither of these dogs were socialised outside of their pack and so both dogs are learning dog skills with other dogs. Ideally it would be great for them to be homed together. He has been with her since he was 8 weeks old.

Both dogs are proved with children and adults and although work needs to be done on their dog skills, this is coming along rapidly.

Both dogs have lived with cats, but they would have to be laid back cats and not ones that were likely to scratch out at them.

This is Maisie having a Lark..

This is Maisie in the Park

We went to have fun and meet some dogs but we didn't meet any dogs! So will go again soon.

This is Maisie coming back to the kennels

Discovered Maisie has a huge lump behind her right ear which we will get our vet to see on Monday. It doesn't look angry, quite settled but need to check it out. You can see it in this pictures pale skin under the ginger ear fur..the black ring is an old flea collar that we have since put in the bin.

Which obviously didn't work as she and Dillon were running alive with fleas when they arrived.

We walked Maisie with her friend Dillon today (who is reserved now). She was very pleased to be out and about but liked to keep an eye on Dillon to keep him in check! My daughter loved her on sight. She wasn't keen on meeting some other dogs on the walk though. She trots along just happy to be out - something to give her collie brain some stimulation.  She has so much of the world to explore now.

Maisie

I met Maisie for the 1st time today, what a sweetie, although she is very noisy in her kennel with the wierdest whimper/bark.

She is so gentle, in the kennel I slipped the harness on her with no problems, although I didn't really need it in all honesty.

On the walk she didn't pull once, if you spoke her name she responded immediately. She will sit & wait on command, she isn't fazed by vehicles or horses.

At the halfway point we had a big fuss, she is a very affectionate little dog and loves 1-2-1 attention, rolling about on her back encouraging you to stroke her belly Rolling Eyes

She is a brilliant little dog who would be ideal for someone looking for a more mature dog, get in quick before she's taken!!!

Yes, I think she is a special girl - someone is going to be very lucky.  She definitely caught my attention.  Let's hope someone recognises that very soon and offers her the home she deserves.  Very Happy

Maisie

I took Maisie out this afternoon as she was making her funny yelping noise when I walked past her kennel. I put the harness on her (force of habit) and off we went, she is so sedate on the lead just trots along next to you, no pulling at all. She will sit on command when traffic approaches, she loves a fuss and a treat or two.
At the halfway point she spent ages rolling about in the grass on her back with her legs in the air (Floosey) and then climbing all over me, we had a great time.
A lovely little girl, ideal for someone looking for a slightly more mature companion.

Maisie is on a Trial Adoption. Have you ever seen such a happy family!  Hubby comes home tomorrow and he cant wait to meet Maisie too!

There is an allergy in the family so just need a week to see how this fairs. Paws crossed.
Sharonr - Admin

Fingers crossed re the allergy - sending positive vibes.

Maisie is now fostered.  She has been reactive to dogs outside. She has only been formally walked with ourselves so has yet to learn how to relax 'in passing' other dogs. Her foster family love her and saving her going back into kennels.

Maisie's family are sticking by her and working with her issues...Emma thought livercake was the answer..the trainer thought Cheese. Maisie scratched her head and said BOTH!

Aw such a lovely update :

Hi Dee,

I couldn't resist sending you a couple of photos of Maisie. I hope you can open them.

Thank you for your phone call the other day and sorry I had to rush off. Yes, I suppose my phone call about adopting Maisie was a bit out of the blue, but it came after a lot of thought on our part so it didn't seem sudden to us.

I was pleased I asked the behaviorist to come. She plans to come back and help me introduce Maisie to Caleb in a couple of weeks. Since Caleb has his own issues, that may prove slightly more challenging, but we shall see what can be achieved with a pouch full of cheese. We may have to upgrade from cheddar to something smellier!

Maisie has settled in beautifully. She is very, very people oriented and loves company but is so mellow - she doesn't fuss for attention. Mind you, she wont work for food either - stick it in a kong and she isn't interested! As I write she is doing her rug impression, completely flat out on the floor.

You should see her off-lead in the bottom of the garden. She races around with a huge grin, looking like the happiest dog in the world. She is very nosy and loves new smells and new things. But she made me giggle the other night, when she came face-to-face with a frog and was totally bewildered.. When we went back past it, she gave it a very wide berth and pretended it wasn't there.

I think she is going to enjoy herself here.

Best wishes, Penny

AND WOW just look :

Maisie news

Maisie has been ours, and we have been hers, for nearly two months and it’s hard to believe we were ever without her.

She loves people, walks, chasing rabbits and squirrels, rolling around on the grass - and most of all TREATS. And we love her very much.

We had a bit of a rocky start because Maisie is not good with strange dogs. I was taken by surprise by the severity of her reactions, and initially felt dealing with that side of her was beyond my capabilities. But after the initial wobble we decided she was too special to give up without trying, so we contacted a really lovely behaviorist. I found seeing first-hand how to deal with various situations – and seeing that Maisie could do it with the right handling - helped so much.

Now Maisie has lots of walks in places where she sees on-lead dogs – and, with plenty of distraction and cheese, she is doing really well. She has met several of my friends’ good-natured dogs for some gentle socialisation. (The meeting with my Mum’s dog was not quite so successful, but he is a far more challenging dog. We’ll take that one slowly.)

She isn’t keen on being left home alone and greets me on my return at fever pitch. But she doesn’t have to put up with being alone for long because she is so well-behaved at work that I just take her with me.

She has a severe firework phobia, so hasn’t enjoyed the November nights, poor thing.

Here is a photo of her making herself comfortable and one of her destroying the garden in her continuing bid to dig up the resident mole. And I thought the molehills looked bad…

Hmmm

Don't seem to have got the hang of the photo thing. I went to photobucket and everything. Sorry about that!
Sharonr - Admin

Not sure why that wasn't working, but have sorted for you.  Here she is ...
