Lucy Jack Russell ?2yrs Aylesbury Bucks

Lucy is a broken coated short legged Jack and has been bouncing about. Her last home sounded  'rough', but they tried to do the best by her and did hand her into rescue. She is a sweetie, but we need her to settle so we can assess her further.  She will be spayed on Tuesday.

Annette what a wonderful mum..came to meet dogs today hoping to go home with their second dog. Adamant she wanted to take our advice. But in the end it was blindingly obvious to everyone LUCY...and .... BILLY  Laughing a match made in heaven

PS Billy cant be neutered due to a heart problem. Lucy is not in season and will be spayed this week.

Total whirlwind for us all  Laughing   We made it home - despite heading off the wrong way round the M25 Embarassed

Lucy was so good in the car - it felt like a very long journey.

She is very much a Jack Russell - has checked every single nook and cranny.  She is very sweet and affectionate and has even managed to get the old boy playing  Wink

Trying to calm everything down now - don't know about them, but I'm exhausted and ready for bed.

Lucy is booked in for her spay tomorrow.  We have been out and about this morning to see the vets etc - she is sooooo tired, but good as gold - except with the cats we met, she's not good with cats, but then neither is Billy  Wink

Just a few photos of Billy and Lucy - thought we'd better have a long and lovely walk before the op tomorrow.

She is so unfit!!!!!!  We went 'up the hill' which is pretty steep - I can't do it in one - need a breather - and so did she  Wink  Billy and my eldest son went running off up ahead, Lucy and I puffed and panted behind.

It was a lovely evening and it's a lovely view

Billy - looking just a little bit grey

It's been a strange day - full of highs and lows ....

Oh boy this all looks so right!

Straight out of the Eastend of London..into the hills.  Yes she appreciates the highs and the lows...which you call 'Hills!'

Billy pestered her less yesterday.  They seem to like being one either side of me on the sofa  Very Happy  We had a peaceful and calm night and Billy greeted her with a sniff and a wag of his tail this morning and then hopped off onto the other sofa to do his own thing.  We had a lovely little walk and then she left us  Sad

Think she might have been first on the operating table - turns out she had already been spayed.  How sad that her previous owners didn't tell you and it would've saved her from having to go through all that  Confused

Picking her up and bringing her home first thing tomorrow.  Hopefully she will recover really quickly and we can pick up from where we left off.

It already feels odd with one less in the house.

Oh what a shame  Crying or Very sad .  Glad you missed her already though  Smile

It is of no surprise. Have you had the history on this dog? If not then let me know and I will tell you what I know.

I know pretty much nothing about her - the vet worked out as much as I knew - that she is about 2 and is microchipped!
xxlynne

Haved asked Emma to share if she knows more as I only knew that she was getting out the house and running around the road and couldn't deal with her. I did ask the owners to call Emma and arrange to take her to Emma.

Will post later as off to the daily grind at the mo! So many Staffies to cuddle!  Razz

Thanks Emma, thanks Lynne.  It will be good to know anything you can tell me.

She is home now - she looks a bit spaced out, and was keen to go for a walk  Shocked until she saw the front door.  Plenty of tail wagging when she got in and saw Billy.  She is back on her favourite part of the sofa as I type - beginning to chill  Cool

Was good to have some time with just Bill in the house to remember what he was/is like and guage better if he is happy with her around - I think he is.  He is much much calmer and relaxed than he was Very Happy

She has lost a lot of weight - what with not having had a chance to settle at kennels or here and then the op.  Not a bad thing - she was quite plump!

She (so far) has been an unbelievably good dog in every way.  She has looked around every inch of the garden but as soon as she goes somewhere I'd rather she didn't she comes as soon as I call her - more quickly than Bill  Laughing

I can only imagine she was left in the garden for long periods alone .......

Completely the opposite as it goes.

I have vague history details on Lucy. I got a call from a very panicked lady saying that she had to get rid of her Jack Russell bitch and that no other rescue would take her.
She was due to be put to sleep by this family because they could not cope with her behaviour anymore.

The family had rescued Lucy off of a very elderly lady who could not cope with her puppyhood and had decided that the ONLY way of coping with her jumping, nipping and barking was to lock her in an upstairs spare bedroom which is where she stayed for a year.
The people became aware that this dog was imprisoned and offered her a home which the previous owner agreed to straight away.

The new owners had a baby and when the baby started toddling Lucy started to grab hold of the nappy when the baby ran around and they mistakingly thought that she was being vicious. They also said that she was awful with other dogs and constantly attacked them.
Unfortunately they had been telling all the rescues that she was vicious  and they kept getting the same answer...No!

They felt the only way of getting rid of the problem (Lucy) was to have her put to sleep, but had been passed my number as someone who took dogs that other people didn't want.  Rolling Eyes

I had no room, so Rescue Remedies stepped in Very Happy (thank yooouuuu!)

My work colleague took Lucy into her home when she arrived as she felt that she would appreciate a home environment rather than a kennel and she paired happily with Stan (my own rescue dog currently looking for a home) so that was the anti-dog accusation squashed.
She also did an assessment on her tempremant and Lucy turned out to be very cuddly and accepted anyone who fancied fussing her! So, that was the aggression issue gone.

She also assessed the owners briefly and noticed that they were very unfit and in fact got out of breath just walking from their car to reception (approx 20 steps!) and after quizzing them a bit, it turned out that they never walked Lucy. She just went out in the back garden.
Her behaviour in their home was due to boredom and she very nearly died for for the sake of trying to keep her extremely bored little mind active.

Re the spaying, I did ask if she was spayed and one of the owners said yes. The other said that the last owner got it done, but they had no proof and thought that she may have come into season whilst with them but didn't know what a season looked like (I thought it could have been a silent season which are obviously dangerous).
Also, we have her vaccination card at the kennels and she is due for her booster next month so I will need an address to send that to please (please send by e-mail). Smile

Hard to believe it's been two weeks since Little Lucy came to live with us - she is well and truely loved by us all  Wink

Billy has totally lost interest in her except as a friend !!!!!!  And I am in awe of what a wonderful, generous fella he is.  It was agony knowing whether getting a second dog would be a good thing or not for him, but he is really enjoying himself and teaching her all of his bad habits  Rolling Eyes

Lucy met Billy's number 1 fan - his vet, who did her op and follow-up.  He couldn't wait to tell me what a lovely dog she was and pick her up and give her a good old rub  Very Happy  He is a terrier man  Wink   He was shocked to hear she had been branded as 'vicious' and most indignantly said there was "not an ounce of viciousness in her"  Razz

Anyway, she is everything we wanted (and already had) in a dog and more and we feel incredibly lucky to have found her - she loves food (at last), loves the children, loves being out in the garden, loves Billy, and loves, loves, loves walks - although it is like taking a 2 year old puppy out: everything is new and interesting and exciting and the no-pull harness has only helped a bit, so far  Rolling Eyes

So here are a few photos:

Guess we forgot to tell you that she could drive!!!!  Lovely photos, thank you :o)

Lucy the Jack Russel TERRIER!!!!

We are off to our 3rd session of dog training tonight - we have had 2 individual sessions but tonight we are going to dog agility!  Not to do the agility bit, but to socialise the little lady.

We truly love Lucy, but she is a lunatic on the lead.  It's like having a two year old puppy when we go out. I thought she just needed to see the world and she would start calming down, but she shows no sign of it, in fact she may be a bit worse now that she's a bit more settled and confident!

We have a figure of 8, no-pull harness. It makes a tiny smidgen of a difference. She is marginally better going somewhere we've been before. She is good off the lead, but I have only let her off where I am sure nothing and noone and no other dogs are around.

But, the other day she was off the lead and caught and killed a rabbit!!!!!! and it wasn't a quick painless death, I heard it screaming!!!!!!!   The next day she managed to grab a pigeon by the neck in some undergrowth while she was on the lead. She didn't kill it - I watched the poor thing wobble off as if it was drunk - but there was no blood and it had disappeared by the time the next person walked by.

I cannot deal with dead, or much, much worse, half dead things - I take whatever wildlife in distress I find to St Tiggywinkles.  So she is now wearing a bell and two dog tags which make a noise against each other and I am now that terrier owner Lynne mentioned in another dogs thread - ever vigillant - she would clearly kill a cat if she got the chance.  She goes absolutely bonkers crazy if she sees one.

But that's OK, it's what she does, I can cope with those kinds of restrictions and I think she can too.

The thing I have trouble with is when she sees other dogs.  I can live with dogs not being reliable in their reactions to other dogs - Billy is not so good with other boy dogs, but it's the noise she makes: OMG OMG OMG!!!!

It's a cross between a yelp and a howl and a scream and a shriek and all the time she's making the noise she is lunging and jumping and pulling and its mad and sooooooo embarrassing and soooooo hard to manage with Billy barking his head off too!!!!!!!!

We have tried with nice dogs and nice dog owners to introduce her, but she is a bit growly and nippy - not full-on go for them like Billy might, but it's not good.

So, I really felt I needed some practical, show-me-what-to-do help and nothing violent or horrible.

What has made me a bit more stressed while I was looking for someone, was that loads of trainers I phoned were really wishy-washy, not sure how/if they could help, or didn't return my calls or were stupid expensive.

Anyway, hope you have made it to the end of this lengthy post,  because even after 2 obedience sessions I think there is already a positive difference.  The dog trainer says she is a lovely little dog, not too hyper (but she was in a confined area!) and very bright.

I think she thinks I'm setting my sights a bit low - all I want is her to stop making that noise - she thinks I could have a well trained and well behaved dog somewhere down the line .... now that would be first  Wink
