Ky Staffie x 2 yrs old Gatwick (S) W Sussex Kennelled
His Story: Ky has been through 5 homes and failed only due to his big heart with associated energy. Lived successfully with another dog and young children.
Salient points: Medium sized bull breed dog. Young, well trained, intelligent and excellent temperament. Proven with children. Needs secure garden amnd active lifestyle.
Advert: Ky has come into rescue having been passed from home to home. He needs a dog experienced family who are ready to receive him and able to centre their lives around his needs. He has proven time and time again to be an excellent family dog- with children of all ages, dogs inside and outside his home. His energy is bold Staffie energy that needs to say I love you I really really do! and to expressed within his exercise regime focused on meeting his needs. Neutered, vax'd and chipped.
Ky is the Jack of Hearts ... people love him and he loves them. His energy levels are high currently as he is in kennels and a bit concerned as to why?! Ky has the friendly Staffie nature and we know his full history through pet homes. His forever home will be one where his owners have gone out looking for him rather agreed to take him in as he had nowhere better to go! Ky is very loveable so this shouldn't be a problem. So lets play happy families with Ky being that essential ingredient to bring the real elements of family life and fun together; exchange the tellies for the wellies; the sofa for the park bench!
Please visit this Ky's individual thread, in Dogs needing homes in our care on this forum to find out more about them and follow their progress.
If you are interested in re-homing please complete our homing questionnaire so we can ensure our dogs are matched and will suit your circumstances/lifestyle.
"Please note that this dog is currently in kennels and is also available for foster until a 'forever' home is found".

Well it is interesting getting to know Ky
He is a beautiful boy but has not had much training. He is very strong on the lead and seems to know where he wants to go. I discovered this morning that he does not like cars at all For a big strong boy he turned into a quivering wreck when I opened the car and didn't really settle at all. When I tried to get him back in at the vets, he adopted a wonderful star pose and I had my work cut out to get him back in again. Some work to done here, then
He was very well behaved at the vets as he had a little check over, his ears looked into and his first vax. All without any fuss at all. Lovely boy

Knowing the boy..I wish we had had our film crew out filming you this am Karen

Certainly provided a good 20 mins entertainment for the men fixing the roof opposite - no offers of help though
Another thing I did take away from it, is that throughout, although he was determined not to get back in, there was not a single moment of agression. Not a growl or any use of his mouth at all - nothing. Just a big softie with bags of determination

This is a very smart looking dog - like his face patches!!

Oh he is sweet, love the middle parting with the matching side fringes. Bless.
Would have paid good money to watch Karen get him into the car too!

Ky has spent the day at the vets getting snipped and is now safely back in his kennel.
I had a conversation with one of his previous owners today and managed to find out so much more about him. He was the last of a litter of pups kept shut up in a room and fed on Coco Pops and raw suasage so he had no input for the first 5 months of his life He then went on to live with a family and 5 children, aged 11yrs through to toddler. He was a much loved pet but unfortunately as he got older he became more dominant with the resident unneutered Lab and play times between them got more and more 'rough'. From here he moved through a couple of homes, many with children and one with a bitch that he got on with.
He was finally handed into a vets by a lady who couldn't cope with him any longer but although he has been through a number of homes, he has been loved.
He is reknown for being an escape artist and able to scale 6' fences easily but also known as a 'big softie'.
I hope that now he has been neutered the urge to 'get out' will start to fade and I would say he would bond very quickly with a loving family - definitely wears his heart on his sleave
|
karen
|
Ky has hardly noticed he has been neutered and is completely disregarding the vets advice to try and keep quiet for a few days
We have been having some quite long but steady walks over the last 2 days in an effort to wear him out.
We have also been practicing ' the car' Yesterday we had a good sit in the boot and today inside. Not the best picture in the world but.....
and he got in all by himself today
Sadly he just does not like being in kennels and is so desperate to have company. Spice passing by with Sammy75 set his tail awagging this morning.

Yes Ky continues to be a very good boy...Jumped straight in the car this morning ..sadly the crate wasn't open so tried again and needed a little more persuasion but relatively easy to achieve. Sang to me for most of our journey to Croydon. Reception party was there to received him Nancy and Minx's new mum cuddle dept. Fred Frank's fosterer walking and talking dept. Sharon props. and 'Uo ahhh'er and xxlynne photographer; introducer; Rachel applauder and kennel maiden

KyMy wife and I met Ky for the 1st time today, what a star!
He was brilliant in the kennel, sat while I slipped the halti on him no problems, however outside he hated the halti and kept clawing at it, in the end I gave in and reverted to the harness.
He was more than happy to walk alongside us, no pulling, he is a typical Staffie, he doesn't know where he's going but he wants to get there asap!
We stopped halfway to water him and make a fuss, he wasn't too responsive to fussing, just seemed to want to get on with his walk. Wasn't bothered by the chickens, horses or joggers, he does appear to know 'sit' but chooses to ignore it, so work to be done there me thinks!
All in all, a good introduction, lovely boy
|
karen
|
So pleased to read news of Ky. You are right, he does know 'sit' very well - little monkey One tip, if you carry an empty wrapper in your pocket and crinkle it when you want his attention, you get it undivided
Bet he had a great time out discovering his new surroundings today and I am sure the next time you meet, you will be fussed to bits

Ky is the flavour of the month I think!
So hard to choose as each dog is special in their own way. I have found Ky to be very affectionate and loving, although cheeky when he has his one to one with people.
He is very good being left. Not a peep out of him in the kennel when people aren't around. He just lays and sleeps. But when someone is giving him attention he chatters away and lets you know that he is aware of the attention you are offering him.
The sore on his nose has nearly healed and he eyed the fence up once, but only when he first arrived.
His appetite is great, but no food aggression and no toy possession.
He has no reaction to other dogs, even if they are having a go at him. In fact he seems oblivious to dogs that are telling him off and will stand their with them barking at him like they don't even exist.
This boy is a little gem and I know that someone is going to spot him soon.
Ky would live happily with a bitch. In fact I think he would love it as he has alot of manners around other dogs and deserves a companion.
He is not destructive when left and seems happy and relaxed in his environment. I'd bet he would be even happier in a home though.
Although it is hard to kid test the dogs at work, Ky should live with children fine. Dog savvy kids would be good as he does have playful moments, but he also has calm and pleasent moments and would just love to lat snuggled up with someone.

Karen "the croyds" are inviting you ...come and meet the crazy gang AND see the difference in KY. Ky has relaxed and is a model kennel dog. He is happy and 'cool' I can't believe its the same dog I bought over.

karen

Oh, I would love to take up the invitation and see this gorgeous boy again I do miss him By the time I get the chance, he will probably have been snapped up
I am so happy that he has settled well and is more content. He has such a wonderful character, it's hard to believe he has ended up in rescue.

Why, why, why is this dog still here???
Ky is perfect. His nose has healed, he is quiet, clean, eats well, socialises well with other dogs, is great with kids and loves a cuddle.
But still he sits in kennels. Strange...

(You must come and see him Karen! You will be so pleased. )

So pleased to hear Ky is doing well I hope I can fit in a visit soon - just need a few more hours in the day
However, I still believe he will whisked away soon, he is too much of a dream dog to be around for long

KyI took Ky out this morning, as before he was perfect in the kennel, he let me slip the harness on with no problems.
He was very keen to get out on his walk, when traffic approached he was happy to 'wait' but still didn't want to 'sit'.
At the halfway I tried the 'wrapper in the pocket' trick and it worked
We had a great fuss and I gave him a few treats to encourage 'sits'.
On the way back he was starting to 'sit' on command as traffic approached, a lovely boy, knows his own mind but willing to learn.

KyMy wife (Sue) and I took Ky out 1st this morning, he was keen to get out and about but was still very settled in the kennel whilst I got him into his harness. Out on the walk he was his usual self, striding along purposefully with no idea where he was going!
Really well behaved, although when I tried to fuss him at the halfway point he was transfixed by the cattle in the nearby field and didn't really want a fuss
|
newie244
|
KyOnce again, very settled in the kennel, I went straight to the harnes today and no problems at all.
Ky is very well behaved on the lead, once he gets over the initial eagerness of going on his walk he doesn't pull too hard but likes to keep the lead taut. He still has no idea where he's going but just strides on anyway, still likes to ignore 'sit' although he finds it hard to ignore the 'rustling wrapper'.
He's not as affectionate as some of the dogs can be, but with his little quirks he worms his way into your affections.

KyWent for a short walk with Ky today as it was very hot early afternoon, he's very good in the kennel now, just sits and waits for the harness, still very eager to start with, but not too pully.
However, I forgot the wrapper in the pocket today and do you think I could get him to sit......Pahhh.
Oh well, I'll just have to remember it in the future!

Walked Ky for the first time today with Karen, a new walker. He was very keen to go and with new people decided to pull. Once at the cafe though he sat nicely especially when there were little bits of bacon on offer. He is losing a lot of fur at the moment so gave him a bit of a brush when we got back which he seemed to enjoy.
So pleased to get out with him at last because when he sees you in the kennel block he is so keen for you to take him and usually I have to say no.
I think when he finds his people he will bond well, just at the moment he is so busy when he is out, so much to be done and seen.
I can't see why he is still with us either

Ky had a lovely day yesterday..a long walk with Rob
A flirtation with Tammy
A lovely session with me, chilled out on a grassy area, whilst we waited for some special people to meet him. The family came but there was hesitation so they went away to think about it. Ky had nearly 3 hours out of kennels so was well pleased.

KyI took Ky out 1st thing this morning before it got too hot, no fun & games in the kennel today, waited patiently while I got his harness on him.
On the walk he was his usual really keen self, he seems to have forgotten 'sit' again, so more training with the rustling bag in the pocket reminded him and after that he was fine, stopping and sitting on command when traffic approached.
At the halfway point we had a really big fuss session, he seems to be more affectionate these days, either because he knows me better, or he's coming out of himself around people. He did jump up a couple of times towards my face which I did discourage, although when he does do it, he wants to lick your face and neck, but it's something some people may be put off by, so I try and encourage 'managed' staffie licks not excitable jumping up licks, if that makes sense.
A lovely walk in the sunshine

We walked Ky again today and despite a little too much enthusiasm in the kennel I got him harnessed up. Tried a figure of 8 collar (like a halti) which improved his walking no end until he got fed up with it and scratched at it. He stopped that when he hurt his nose and I kept it on loose instead so he could get used to it. Tried it again later and he was fine with it. Had lots of hugs at the cafe and he leaned into my leg while I stroked him. He can walk so nicely but he can also pull. Again he needed reminding that jumping up to you is not very polite.
Apart from being a bit larger than some of the other staffies, he is in many ways an easier dog for someone prepared to put in a bit of training at first.

Walked Ky again today and he was pleased to be out. He managed to scratch his nose on the brambles so had to take the halti off - it obviously bothers him. A waggy tailed cheerful boy. This little lad really grows on you after a time.

Ky missed out on a walk last week so has been on my mind. So here he is exploring my house and meeting my 2 girls. They have pretty much ignored each other except for polite interest. Although not usually great at responding to his name he has explored my garden thoroughly but still kept an eye on me coming back when I call him.
Being a hot day he is hot and bothered and keeps trying to lie down and settle but then has to go and explore. Typical splayed staffie sprawl - he will find out the best place for that is the tiles not the wooden floor.
All signs good so far.
He is on temporary foster to give him a break and because it is the start of term and the house seems too big with only 2 dogs and no kids during the day

Well Ky is a truly lovely boy - bright and very affectionate. We all loved having him as a companion. He should be trainable because he really cares what you think, so long as you can bypass his stubborn streak
He is a different dog indoors - very loving but not clingy. Can be left downstairs in a crate at night - some barking every now and then but that would lessen over time and he would probably be quiet as a mouse in your bedroom.
He came round to the complete dog food when he got hungry
He went to school to meet my daughter and met several people nicely for a fuss. Outside of the house he is less affectionate but that is because he has a purpose - getting on with the walk.
He is good at opening doors although he only did it to get back in from the garden. No attempt to scale our high fences. He learns a walking route almost immediately and knows where his kennel is. He has been walked along steeets before because he looks for cats in every gateway. He saw a couple of them and was very interested but I persuaded him to move on. Loves all the smells. He is fit and healthy but could do with a bit more exercise to keep him in trim.
Clean in the house. Takes treats gently. Needs reminders not to jump up but that is understandable given that he is normally in kennels.
Generally a very good mixer, he was overwhelmed by all the new experiences despite having lots of walks and a crate to rest in and there was an incident with one of my dogs. They settled beautifully together exploring the garden together and walking alongside. They all slept in the same room together as I sat at the computer. But it just didn't work out between them in the end. We are very sad that we aren't going to spend more time with him - he will make a great family dog. But of course I will still walk him at the kennels and look forward to it.

KyI took Ky out 1st this morning, no problems getting the harness on him following a stern 'sit'.
On the walk he still likes to pull a bit but he is getting better, honest.
He is getting much better at sitting command, he did show a bit of interest in the cattle today, although he lost interest quite quickly when one walked up to the fence
We had a great fussing session at the halfway point, very affectionate.
On the way back, a lady who's a regular walker stopped to make a fuss of him, but as she only had dry biscuits he decided he wasn't interested and sat down with his back to her, grumpy old so-and-so.
What a character............

Ky was my lunch companion today. Pulls when walking but waits so patiently if you stop and chat to someone At the cafe he leans up against you, such a loving boy if you get to know him. On his walks though it is head down and on with the job, no idle chit chat necessary

Ky hitched a lift yesterday to new kennels. He has needed to go in the isolation block as he will jump over kennel sides to ...see what is on the other side! So he has a hat on his kennel. If any dog walkers visit Gatwick (S) can they make a point of running Ky in the paddock then off on a walk with him. He needs space; and laughter and fun fun fun.

Took Ky for a lovely walk to the park for lunch. He is such a steady dog in some ways - just gets on with what life throws at him. With a bit of training he would be a great dog He makes a great companion, he really is out walking with you, on an adventure together.

Ky was so disappointed that he didn't get the lunch walk today He did not want to turn back - I think he was so looking forward to his lunch stop in the park He was so excited when I went into his kennel block. Not much time for cuddles todfay as he was so intent on getting on with his walk.

The cheeky boy got his lunch trip today
Went with Winnie accompanied by Heather and Tom. He got on fine with her but had to tell her off when she stood on his head
He was pleased to meet new people in the beer garden and saved me from myself by helping me with my chips
Anyone who loves cuddles and licks will love this boy
He just loves to have some companionship. Lots of walks and company are what Ky is crying out for.

He walked like a labrador..gentle and considerate after the initial enthusiasm

Ky had a trip to the park with Zebedee today and behaved really well. His keeness to get there is strong but he loves people and loves nothing more than a cuddle or to sit on your feet when you arrive somewhere.
