Kathy Brindle Staffie Kingston Upon Thames Fostered

Hi Lynne,

Ok, I went to the pound today.  I did see another brindle bitch, she needs some help, you'll see what I mean from the pictures.....She is older looking and is a lovely girl. She is calm and friendly, loves a fuss.  They tried her with another dog and she wasn't too bad.  Bless her, the young bitch wanted to play with her and she just didn't want to know so was a bit grumbly with her but I think she would be ok with a calm dog and good introductions.

She has hair loss round her rump and tail, the skin is dry and toughened.  She is such a nice girl.......

Please can you help her??

Many thanks,
Gilka  xx

OMG   Love her! Kathy come home soon

oh my goodness  Sad  Crying or Very sad , at least she has found RR where she will be safe, happy and returned to her shining glory!!
xxlynne

Sweetheart sleep tight tonight you have a long journey tomorrow then we are going to meet Christabel who will give us our plan to build you up and get you better. You will be staying in my loft room in peace with 5 star service and short walks until you get better. Lots of cuddles await you!

Kathy is now with us!  She is very much a 'ringer of Pickles (homed earlier this year)and Phoebe'. A small slender framed staffie with a pretty pretty face and sweet demeanour. Our vet registered her as '5yr' old its hard to say as she is physically challenged but I would say 5-7 yrs based on the browning of the whites of her eyes and hint of white hairs on her muzzle.

In the vets: Yes to meet her currently tugs at the heart strings.. Rolling Eyes  Evil or Very Mad  Crying or Very sad   She is skeletal, her skin is hard grey and powdery bare crusted lower back and backside..the rest of her body and legs are less severe with very thin fur and 'spots'. Her head is least affected. Scrape carried out and surprizingly no evidence of mites. She has raging kennel cough and teeth need a scrape. She has had puppies in the past. She is swollen, but not in season. Treatment plan Maleseb baths every 2-3 days. Have 'Advocate' to hit any hint of mange or fleas. 2 weeks course of antibiotics. Vitamins supplement. Skin care lotion. Gentle diet .. naturediet. Melted Christabel's (our vet's) heart when she went to give her a treat and she sat and took it very gently!

At home: Kathy is being kept separated as she needs to recover. She enjoyed our garden with the lights on and ate her meal gently without 'gusto'. We joined her having our meal on the veranda. Came over for affection, a little wary and nervous, but definitely has human trust. Seemed especially taken with Lorenzo Smile  Had a Malaseb bath and then shown her room which she seemed delighted with having lovely views over the neighbourhood. Settled over night just coughing and throat clearing to be heard.

Kathy has a wonderful nature and will win through this unscathered we're sure. Her Staffie love for people and affection will win many hearts as she is gentle with it. She has the prettiest head ever!

The pictures below are taken just as a record of her poor condition. Already after her bath her furs beauty is showing.  Like Phoebe she has what I called a 'Black Mahogany' Brindle rich in colour.

Welcome to your new life of loving care Kathy. Very Happy

Oh Kathy ...things noted today..
1) Teeth are in a good condition; maybe younger? 5yrs
2) Settles in the car, not too interactive..just keeps an eye
3) Sad feel about her, looks at you with sad forboding eyes
4) Greets strangers really well sides up to them and will quite soon after arrival offers the belly
5) Knows to bite through a lead to try and get to where she wants to be..front of car into back seat when left!
6) Takes tablets really well!
7) Long exploritory, intuitive, reflection on her skin. Hard 'spots' under a dry 'elephant' type grey skin...feeling this is due to starvation/ poor nutrition. I am sure with a high quality diet her immunity will kick in.
Cool Kind gentle nature No problems with children. Warm, grateful and concerned little personality.

Sad sad story behind this little love
karen

Thank goodness, she is now in absolutely the right place Exclamation With a lot of work, worry and love, we will all be looking at wonderful photographs of a beautiful dog, resting her head in a home of her own at some point in the future:!:
xxlynne

Kathy's lovely lovely face..matches her lovely lovely personality.

I'm serving hard labour...oh its tough!

Shocking to see the state that some Staffie's come into us..but TLC and in less than a week you can see such improvement in her condition.

Kathy knows to sit,  paw...other paw...and looks ernestly and keenly into your eyes. She doesn't seem to have been ill treated by her demeanour.  Yet I could see her sleeping in rough conditions with a litter of pups without the enriched diet to feed her pups...and them sucking her dry. Must have had pups last season. Will spay her this week.
Gilka

She looks so much better already!  Fantastic to hear how she is getting on, and doing so well....
Such a beautiful girl..

xx
xxlynne

Yes marked change in Kathy..she has stubble all over her bare skin, where she has fur it is glistening.  I did notice she seemed quite swollen and wasn't sure whether it was because of her poor skin coverage that she looked more prominent.  Low and behold she came into season today!  Bless her/ Sometimes good healthy food and life style and the body responds! Socialisation will be on hold for a wee while!
xxlynne

Today...Kathy had a date. Fiona appeared and with such excitement secured her in the car..not easy, one chewed lead later..and off she went.

Fiona is in love but realistic that Kathy might not fit in with all aspects of her lifestyle but basic ones she will.  So Fiona is offering our little friend a helping hand through her season and safely out the other side so as the butterfly emerges in fully glory she can fly.....if she must!

So, we left Lynne's house with Kathy's face pressed up against the car window watching Lynne fade into the distance. The journey home was fairly uneventful. Kathy happily watched the world go by and then settled down for a nap.
She did get a little stressed when we got to my place and we had a couple of accidents despite being taken into the garden on arrival to powder her nose. Still, the clever girl managed to keep it to the laminate and came to tell me. A big cuddle and a drink of water and she was all calm and happy again. Oh, she likes being sung to too!
She's now snuggled up next to me on the sofa snoring away! I'm really looking forward to getting to know my little lodger.

Laughing How wonderful for this little girl - no doubt she will florish and shine  Laughing

Thought it was time for a photo update of Kathy. She's really blossomed in Lynne's care. She has a good coating of stubble on her baldie bits and, as you can see from her glossiness, the rest of her coat feels very silky and lovely (especially on her head - good job she likes kisses!)

So things I've learned about Kathy so far...
- she likes her bed! At 10.30pm she jumped into her bed, promptly started snoring and didn't stir til i woke her at 8am.
- she knows some commands. She sits on command and waits patiently for her lead to be put on and off. We even managed a 'stay' today - think it was the promise of a belly rub!
- if she thinks you have a treat for her she will immediately sit down and offer you her paw. If you're not quick with the treat she offers you the other paw just in case.
- although interested in your food when you are eating she will stay on her blanket and doesn't beg or pester
- bath time is a total body experience. For EVERYONE!

Fiona will give an update but after a shakey start Kathy is beginning to settle.

So, kathy & I have been housemates for a week now. We had a bit of a wobbly start. The change really threw her. She was very anxious about almost everything and decided that the best way to express her anxiety was to either poo or vomit or both! She was intense in her need for reassurance and either cowered in a corner, hurled herself on my lap or rolled onto her back for an anxiety tummy rub. We've been using a DAP plug in since thursday and I worked hard at whilst giving her LOTS of attention, it's been on my terms and not as a reward for the anxiety. And it's working REALLY well. She's such a different girl - all happy, calm and tail waggy.

We also have been working on her aversion to pooing outside. She seemed to think my hall was the best place although she knew it wasn't a good thing and went into anxious submissive mode afterwards. Anyway, we've had 2 days of outdoor pooing. Can't tell you how proud I was - had to ring my mum!

All that aside, she is an absolute smasher! We've been taking secluded strolls. She walks SO well on the lead - trotting by my side with a relaxed lead. We went for a run in the rain on sunday which she loved. Bless her, she kept to my pace even though she desperately wanted to race off. She's totally unconcerned about cars, lorries, buses, motorbikes, helicopters, men on bicycles riding on the pavement (hate that!) and ladies with prams. She largely ignores people apart from having a love affair with young men in hoodies! She did get very worried (and vomited) around a friend of ours who has a very loud strong cockney accent.

We're discovering that Kathy has no play skills at all. My daughter tried to get her interested in a variety of toys but she just looked at Maria with bemusement! Maria decided to keep her entertained by teaching her some new commands. So far we have very reliable responses to sit, paw (makes putting on her halti so easy!), down, in, stay, come and high five!

She made her first pal too at the weekend - the soft and gentle retriever at my local. They were lovely together - lots of sniffing and following each other around. Olly wanted to play chase but Kathy couldn't seem to work out what he wanted her to do.

So, all in all, a good week. She really is an adorable dog!
xxlynne

Kathy has come to me for the weekend. She was sadly pounced on by 2 dogs on Thursday night..she has a few puncture wounds on her rear but otherwise OK. She behaved impeccabily during the attack apparently. She was offered a weekend foster place whilst Fiona was away but decided she could spend a quiet weekend with me in familiar surroundings as she is in her last week of season. So Monty had a change of venue with lots of fun!
xxlynne

Kathy had her first vax today. She spent alot of the day enjoying the garden. She also managed to get cheese packet with cheese inside off the counter then followed it up with a garden apple! Wonderful girl; wonderful temperament. Fiona is planning to adopt if she settles with dogs after her spay and hormonal settlement so am moving her into reserved but will place back in foster if her status changes. She is now in her final 7 days of season...so 6 weeks from now she can be spayed.

Laughing So pleased for her, fingers crossed  Laughing

During a loving session with Kathy on the sofa Kathy caught and bruised Fiona's daughter's face.  The daughter was fine about it but went and had it checked out.

Kathy goes into Farnham kennels tomorrow. I had to choose between Monty with his skin condition; chronic ear infection and later part of kennel cough and Kathy who is 3rd week of her season and has had a rotten life. Kathy will be fine. As soon as Monty is homed I'll have her out!
karen

Kathy seems to have accepted kennel life and resigned herself to it. She will be having her weekly baths and is having her skin treated.

She came out for a walk today and all I can say is what a lovely dog - easy on the lead (no lead chewing today Wink ) Tomorrow she is having a day out with Janet - will do her the world of good Laughing
Janet

I've been really looking forward to taking Kathy out for a nice long walk - she looks so fed up in her kennel.

We took her for a walk around the woods before we set off - no lead biting again, quite strong on the lead for a few minutes and then easy to walk. She was very interested in chasing a few squirrels and generally have a good look around.

Then we went out for a ride in the car to a nearby common - she settled down very quickly and sat on my mum's knee on the back seat. No trouble at all.

We had a lovely walk. We met a large bouncy pointer who wanted to play - Kathy wasn't interested in playing, but they sniffed each other for a bit - all very good natured.

We did a bit of running together and I tripped over a tree root and fell over - Kathy came running straight back to me, looked at me, licked my face and rolled over next to me for a tummy tickle . I think she was worried about me Exclamation

We ate our sandwiches in the car - although she was interested in them, she waited patiently until she was given some, and she takes food very gently.

When we got back, she went straight back into her kennel with her chew. It's such a shame that she's got used to being in there on her own  Sad Another very beautiful girl who deserves some love  Smile

Gilka

Oh Kathy, poor baby girl.  Keep your chin up gorgeous, your new mum will find you soon.
xx
Janet

Kathy's sad face has gone! I was greeted with a happy, smiling one this morning. I think she was pleased to see me.

We had another lovely walk - she's a good companion, and makes cute little snorting noises when she walks. She pulls a bit to start with, but after a few minutes, you hardly know she's there.

For the first time today, she jumped up in the kennel to watch me leave.

I hope she doesn't have to stay in kennels for long cos she'd make someone a faithful and loyal friend. All she needs is a bit of love and attention.
karen

Laughing Kathy is continuing to do so well. She is such a little love. Her fur is growing back so well and she is filling out. As Janet said, such a pleasure to walk and generally be with  Laughing

Kathy has a sponsor!

The Animal Medical Care Foundation put Frank & Kathy up for virtual adoption on their website a little while ago.  Kathy's thread: http://amcf-adoption.weebly.com/kathy---rescue-remedies.html.

This means that the AMCF members are able to sponsor the dogs and assist with their care and medical costs.  Obviously a great help to us and a fantastic initiative!  Very Happy

Astrid has very kindly agreed to sponsor Kathy and she is our first AMCF sponsor.  Wonderful news, thank you Astrid! Very Happy

Yes she does!  She seems to think she's some sort of a bloodhound - when I walked her today she kept putting her nose down to the ground sniffing and snorting as she walked.  Then she'd come up for air before she was nose down sniffing again!

Laughing How wonderful Kathy has a sponsor - thank you Astrid and all at AMCF Laughing

She is such a dear little soul Exclamation

Lovely people

What lovely people!   Razz

Laughing I told Kathy all about the wonderful people who have taken up her cause as we walked this morning. I took her snorts as her way of saying 'thanks' Laughing

Perhaps she also meant some of the many cuddles she gave me for them too Wink

When we got back, she was as good as gold and took a chew straight back to her bed and settled with it. Lovely, lovely girl Exclamation

How lovely to think that Kathy has admirers overseas!

She enjoyed a good walk this morning, paying close attention to every squirrel within a two-mile radius....and of course sniffing the ground when she wasn't squirrel seeking!
karen

Laughing Kathy had a good week last week - she had some wonderful walks and has made many doggie friends out in the woods. On Friday she made friends with a Dalmation.

She is full of energy now and her coat is very slowly recovering, although the hair regrowth seems to have slowed down somewhat. After our walk this morning, we tried a coat fitting session. Unfortunately the only one that really fitted her properly, she objected to and had removed within about 5 minutes of getting back to her kennel Rolling Eyes I think she wants Trinny and Suzanna Wink

After our walk today, I cat tested Kathy - don't think she could live with cats Shocked

I've just been out on my first walk for rescue remedies and thank you to Janet for showing me the ropes. My boyfriend and our dog sonny came down and we took Kathy out.  The first thing that hit me was how much she reminded me of sonny when we got him, the hair loss and being a bit underweight but also they are both brindle staffs and looked gorgeous together.

Kathy is such a lovely dog, so well behaved, really nice to walk and so good with people and dogs, which we saw plenty of! She sits and lies down when asked and doesn't even pull very hard on the lead (compared to Sonny)

We had a nice long walk and by the end of it Sonny and Kathy were walking right next to each other, when we got back the treats came out and     some pictures were taken, Janet said she'll post them up for me, thank you again! I really hope Kathy finds herself a wonderful home, she really deserves it, I wish I could take her home myself, Sonny and her make a gorgeous couple. It was a bit sad to remind me of how Sonny was treated and that a dog as lovely as Kathy has been through some very bad things but seeing how much people care is great and knowing she will never have to go through that again makes me smile, and makes me even more determined to help
Janet

A few photos from today - big thanks to Gemmap, Paul and Sonny for travelling so far to help out!

gemmap

Aw, thanks janet, my other half is Korb but don't worry everyone thinks he says Paul!

Kathy is so lovely and I think sonny's missing her, he's been moping around since we left. I've been trying all afternoon but still not allowed another dog, Kathy deserves such a good home bless her
samhopwood

Took Cathy for a lovely long walk today and have to say her coat is looking so much better.  She's a complete sweetie and wasn't even phased by all the loud banging from the firing range - they were really going for it this morning!  She looks back to check me every now and then, and of course treats are good too!  She is extremely gentle with treat taking. Very Happy

She loves just strolling along and we both ran up the hill together, me clearly not as fit as Cathy as I felt she just wanted to keep going and going and going!  Well squirrels are so much fun!

She sat very patiently while a fiddled about trying to unlock her kennel (what am I like!) and went in with a lovely chewy to keep her entertained.

Little sweetheart deserves a lovely home. Laughing
Dee

Kathy has been spayed today and is recovering with John and I.

Poor little mite she is. Not sure what is going on but she is just so accepting of it all it just breaks your heart.

Is very under weight so will go back to being on 4 meals a day from tomorrow.

Such a gorgeous little girl grabs your heart in an instant!   Laughing
Dee

Aw our lovely Kathy. What can i tell you about this little girl that is not known????

She is such a gorgeous critter, within minutes steals your heart. Had such a heavy life but things on the up for her now.

Recovering well from her spay and doing well with Marmaduke. They have had several plays. Is a little bossy with him at times but to be fair Marmaduke a very young dog. He takes it all in good part and so lovely to see them running round the garden together.

She doesn't seem to have much idea of play although definitely Marmaduke can get her running and chasing him easily enough.

Has the usual Staffie trait of not liking to get her paws wet but eventually braved it long enough to go have a wee.

Is sleeping in her crate a lot (door is open) but it is near the fire and John has 2 lots of vet bedding to make it soft and cosy.

Not great pictures of her again so sorry :

Snug in her crate :

Playing with Marmaduke :

Love this little lady soooooooooooo much. Needs a very loving and cuddly home and ideally that staffie home that loves to have their dog snuggled under duvet.   Laughing  Laughing  Laughing
irishemeraldlady

Aren't they both BEAUTIFUL!
Marmaduke will show her what it is to be full of life again, & it will not take long!
karen

Laughing What a beautiful pairing - Kathy calm and well trained, playful Marmaduke just needing someone to direct him  Laughing
