Henna 'older' Kelpie

Bless Henna  our little Welsh Kelpie lady ...a very special dog who touched everyones hearts...she spent one year in her forever home with her beloved Sally and Iain.  She will always be with them how happy she is now free and surrendered to help them through their lives as they helped her.

Her thread is below
Henna has just arrived from Many Tears  she is a sweet dear who could rub along with everyone.  Here is Many Tears write up...

"18-11-07 Henna is a lovely old kelpie bitch. She is gentle and good with dogs. She was left to fend for herself on the mountains. She ended up in a pound and her time was up. No one wanted her, so to save her CARA collected her and came here with a van full of the forgotten ones. We have taken what we can fit in to help. the others have been saved and taken to boarding kennels for the present time."

We will be getting her vet checked; spayed and dental during the week.  She is much smaller than I imagined about 17-18 tfrom the floor to shoulder

Henna went to the vet today. Sadly she had to have 21 teeth removed and when they spayed her they found she had a lot of adhesions and her womb was disintegrating. She was on the table for 3 hours and poor love has been carried to her bed in the kitchen ..has raised her head but nothing else. Tomorrow is another day. Confused

0h Lynne the poor little love I hope that she is ok.

Henna was born to strong stock. She scarred me last night..I had decided to leave Maddox in the kitchen with her..I couldn't take Henna in my bedroom because I didn't want to carry her as she was still bleeding from the mouth and no doubt inside. Just about to go to bed and Maddox started creating. I went to see what was happening and Henna was collapsed on the floor beside her bed, conscious. I lifted her to her feet just in case she was struggling to go for a pee but she was just limp. Thanks to Maddox she could have spent hours on the cold floor. I lifted her back into her bed and covered her over..she had a glazed look so I put my hand on her chest to see if she was breathing she was. I laid a towel beside her in case she got up again at least she would be warm.

I went down 5 am and she was standing in her bed as I went in. I let Maddox in the garden and Henna staggered to the door then back into her bed. 7.45 and she was again standing in her bed as I came in she then went in the garden and did a very concentrated wee. She had a soft breakfast at 9am whilst Maddox was out on her walk. She is now in and out of her bed/ garden/ drinking water and seems bright. In fact her eyes seem less 'cataract-y' than before. I called her vet Christobel and fedback and thanked her soooo much again for all her time and care. She said she had been so concerned when she opened her up to find a blackish liquid in her abdomen space..couldn't understand where it was coming from but felt she wouldn't have lived long with her inner state and her mouth must have been causing her so much discomfort. All is well....

I now hear that Many Tears vet refused to spay her as they judged her over-weight. Sylvia is going to be so concerned when she hears bless her but alls well that ends well
Sue

:wink:So pleased Henna has picked up, it was a good move on your part to leave Maddox with her for company. No doubt she will be charging around the garden tomorrow

Poor Poor Henna - I hope she starts to feel better soon.

Henna was literally found wandering the Welsh mountains.  Noone came forward for her so we have her safe in foster...it is all our pleasure.  She was spayed on the 28th Nov and sadly needed to have 21 teeth out!  She has made a remarkable recovery and actually looks better now than before..so must have been terrible chronic pain.

We do not know her age..she is over 10 yrs.  Kelpies are long livers so she isn't giving up yet! She is from strong stock! She is such a dear dog and would suit someone home all day who enjoys walks and socialising with a dog.  She is easy to manage; housetrained and has a very keen appetite.

Henna is a red rich brown with light fawn undercoat; eyebrows and 'gloves'  aptly called Henna. She is chipped and had her first vax. We do not envisage it will be long before she finds her home..she is a beautiful beautiful dog. Quite small...small collie size. Fostered in Richmond

If you are looking for a companion dog easy to manage and quite prepared if health issues should arise as with an older dog..Henna could offer you a whole new focus in life. Please visit our website click HERE and complete our questionnaire emailing it to questionnaires@rescueremedies.co.uk

Ah poor Henna - I'd been watching her when she was on the Many Tears site and hoped she would find a home.

How is she settling?

Henna is very well.  Some cheek is beginning to develop Laughing   She will challengue the terriers for food or chew bones.  and is demanding 'RESPECT!'  She runs about when you call her in.  She has just been playing with Mitchell.

I groomed her coat well last night and will give her a shower today.

I think she is more challenged in the visual side than the hearing..but she gets by very well.  She loves her walks and dogging herself into our settees!
xxlynne

Henna has been sharing the kitchen with Oliver since Lizzy flew the nest.  Oliver being quite fiesty..she had had to put him in his place a few times which I think he appreciated and its saving my vocal cords!  They actually have been playing together which we were so pleased to see..oliver has carried over his new found skills.

Last night she had a visitor who is considering fostering her.  We left it that I would try her with stairs..but do believe she hasn't done them before.  I'm thinking i really want her to have a bath anyway so sometime tomorrow I will make time.

This morning after breakfast...oh yes a clear advantage of being in the kitchen to Henna!... Henna decided when I was loading the washing machine thanks I'll go in the hall.  I went to get her and there she was high up on the stairs.    I smiled and called her in preparedness to reach out and help her down..down she came one step carefully after another.

Morale:  How often we unestimate our dogs!
Sally

I am so happy to hear that about Henna and the stairs!! She really is a beauty, so calm. Can she come to visit us? Very Happy
Sally

Henna came to live with us yesterday. She is the sweetest dog I have ever met, gentle and loving. We've been on some lovely walks and she is doing well with the stairs and the garden  Very Happy
Mow

Oh happy days with Henna  Laughing
Sally

Henna has been with us for nearly a week now but it feels like forever. She is getting cuddles all the time and just love it! Her cheekiness is coming out which is brilliant; she gives me a little bark of impatience if I dont take her out the minute she wakes up!! She loves everybody and every dog she meets. Her lack of sight is more than made up for by her smell and hearing (also loves Phil and Fern on This Morning!!!!).

Well I too am amazed at how small Henna is, what a lovely girl she is too and such a blessing that the vet DID spay her.  How wonderful is this dog Rolling Eyes getting over such an operation and having 21 teeth out too Sad .  I hope she continues to thrive and continues to enjoy her life with her new owners (they look pretty cool people! just right for Henna Laughing )
Sally

Thank you Katiedog, Ive never been called cool before!! We are all so happy, she seems to get younger every day; is now jumping all over the place and sprinting round the park!!!
Jane

Hi Sally,

You guys could probably join the Kelpie Forum, which is run by a guy called Stafan (who is also my agility teacher). Its exclusive for Kelpie owners.

One of my best friends has a Kelpie (genius dog but absolutely mad!) called Branston.  She is also fostering a blue Kelpie called ....yep you guessed it, Blue!  Laughing

It is a year today since Ian and I adopted our beautiful girl Henna. As many of you know she is very poorly now, but I have decided that we should be happy that we have had such an amazing year, and celebrate it. Everyday has been brilliant with our little girl; it has been the best year of our lives.

Congratulations on a whole year.

Without doubt guys and hand on heart this has been the best year of Hennas life too. Know she is wagging her tail in agreement xxxx
Sally

My beautiful Henna has been set free to chase the squirrels and herd the sheep. She fell asleep today in her big bed with me stroking her sweet face. She went very quickly and peacefully. I will remember her Kelpie bossiness when I wasn't getting dressed quickly enough, her snuggling into my body in the morning and her delight at finding some fox poo to eat in the park!! Never has a dog been more loved.

karen

Sally, am so sorry to hear that. You have been in my thoughts and are even more so now. Happy memories will live on with you.

run free, Henna. You were very lucky in the end. Your family were very lucky and so were you. When it's time tap them on the shoulder and show them another soul in need.

Sorry to hear that Henna has been taken from you. She was blessed with a wonderful, loving home for her last days and at least now she is pain free now. She will join the other much loved hounds in heaven. Thinking of you, xxx
