Frank - Bull dog x Gatwick WSussex Kennelled

Please meet Frank...he has the type of face that only a mother can love. And guess what? Yep! I just love this dog!!!

Look at the face...just so squishable and believe me...he really is that! Frank was not blessed with too many brain cells, bless him, so he has made up for it with just adorablity. Very Happy

Poor Frank has had a rather rubbish life so far. He quickly showed signs of tail chasing. Not to the extreme and to be honest he got dizzy after the third turn and fell over sideways, so didn't carry it on for too long! This may suggest that he has been kept in a small room somewhere for long periods of time.

Our Frank is indeed microchipped. The previous owners have been contacted, as they were for two Mastiffs two years ago that were bald with mange that were found straying. She left Frank to his own fate as she did the two Mastiffs. She said that she didn't want him back because of his skin problem. Sad
Frank was taken into a dog pound about two weeks ago. This particular dog pound has a high destruct policy and so the pound did not bother to treat his mange as they were sure that he would be put to sleep.
Frank was one of the few lucky ones and offered a space at Rescue Remedies.

Ironically, due to a loophole in the law, the owner cannot be prosecuted for allowing the dog to get into this sort of state because she has willingly handed the dog over.

As soon as he arrived he started to itch and his skin is so fragile due to the mite infestation that when he tried to scrath himself on a fence his face tore and he started to bleed. Sad Such a shame that the people who have been looking after him for two weeks could not just treat his ailment. Sad

He was immediately treated with Stronghold as it is very obvious Sarcoptic Mange. You can see from the pics that his feet are very red and sore and they are all burning hot. He is being started on a course of antibiotics for the skin infection that has been causing him alot of suffering.

The close up of his face shows months of neglect. His face should be covered with a fine covering of soft hair. It is in fact dry, scaly and bald. Very similar to leather.

Frank is of course entire and arrived unvaccinated. He is currently serving time in quarantine so that he cannot infect other dogs with his mite problem, hence we cannot dog test him at present. He did pull a bit of a funny face at Ruby earlier though so I am thinking that he will be a one person dog!

He is very well behaved on the lead and if you stand still he will sit straight down next to you and is quite happy to wait until you decode what the next course of action is.

Very adorable and I am hoping won't be hanging around too long.

Me thinks you underestimate his appeal  ... he has major cute factor and that's before the RR makeover! Lovely eyes, nice colouring ... mothering instincts are rushing to the fore Smile

PS Great name!
EmmaSemple

Frank can go out on walks straight away but cannot be walked alongside other dogs until at least next weekend (to ensure no cross-infection). He will also need his own harness otherwise mites can be transferred that way.

He may be itchy but I am sure he will enjoy a walk considering that he has been stuck in a kennel in a dog pound for two weeks solid.

Another one for the album. Most dogs meet me with some trepidation on arrival. Not Frank. He met me like a long lost friend!

he is beautiful. has very sad eyes. only been reading forum for a little while and am so shocked that people let their dogs get like this.

Frank just look at the state of you...so pleased you are in our Croydon kennels and being so carefully looked after.

PS He adores people
EmmaSemple

So Lynne? What did you think? Isn't he the most adorable boy ever???

Emma
Dee

Aw my, what a gorgeous boy.

I don't care what anyone says - some one somewhere smiles on us with the dogs that come under our care.

Frank proved of that AGAIN.

What a stuna, and going to feel so much better with the TLC Emma and the gang are going to provide.

Welcome to our Rescue Remedies family Frank you are sooooo gonna love it here xxx

Opps now I'll get emotional......so lovely  so very very lovely.  xxxxards that abuse, neglect and reject such a special dog..it will be to his benefit. They certainly weren't worthy to wash his feet or of that love.  We'll wash those feet and kiss them feet!
EmmaSemple

Not till the mange is gone! Mind you he should have stopped itching by now. Very Happy

Someone very special is going to come along for this boy. When that special person sees him they will know...

My Mum cried  Crying or Very sad  when she read Frank's story (she thinks that he looks adorable - nearly as adorable as me..... Cool ) - I hope he is lucky like me and gets a forever home - she asked you to give him a cuddle from us all..... Love Stevie & Co XXXX love7

Frank is looking great!  Very Happy The Stronghold has worked a treat and his skin is no longer red raw and sore.
He has a definate excess of skin in his mouth and this makes him snuffle alot, but there is little we can do about that!

He had a Malaseb bath today and is much better for it. He no longer feels greasy and has a lovely shine to his coat.

This boy could be castrated now.

Emma
ali12345

Frank certainly is a lovely boy. I took him to the cafe for lunch today and he was so well behaved but thought he would like to sit on my lap for just a little while!  He is a quite small but chunky. When I first went in to get him he sat there looking sad as if to say - so what and I really couldn't read him at all. Then knowing all I'd been told about him being such a lovely,  I put my hand near him and he didn't even sniff, so I stroked him and he sprang to life. suddenly he was my friend and said lets go. He is not a puller but still quite keen to keep going and persuaded me I'd like a little jog for a while! We had a nice lunch time together me and Frank.  Must do it again soon.

a cuddle for Frank....

Awwwwh!! Bless him - I'm crying again (Stevie's Mum) Please, please give him a cuddle from us all.... love5 Thank you! Stevie xx
ali12345

Zoe, a new walker took Frank out today. He was recovering from his recent neutering so I was a bit concerned when after a few yards he sat down...  then we turned around and he sprang into action - nothing wrong at all.  So at this point I decided which way we would go and told him, so off we went this time happily. This boy will definitely try it on if you let him. Such a  sweetie though, a pleasure to take out and about. He came to lunch at the cafe and made friends with a man there who said hello. Once the invite went out he was up there for hugs. The group of them all thought he was gorgeous and could appreciate his rugged good looks!
Alison
blupu

Frank did make me laugh today!!! But what a lovely lad... absolutely fine on the lead (neither of us knew what the momentary pause at the beginning was all about?!?  Laughing ). Great to walk and he sat quietly and calmly when Alison went into the cafe. And he is adorable when he wants a cuddle, just hoists himself onto his feet and puts his paws in your lap, then lets you do the rest as he gazes into your eyes, hehe. Seemed like a very gentle and patient soul really, despite all he's been through. Bless him!
EmmaSemple

Frank has been moved out of isolation now. Very Happy

He had both Sarcoptic and Demodectic Mange when he arrived so he had to stay out of the way of other dogs whilst his Sarcoptic (the contageous type) was eliminated.
He is now left with a bit of Demodectic Mange (which is non-contageous). This type of mange happens when a dogs immune system is at a low. All dogs have the Demodectic mite under their skin, but if their health is compromised then the mite will become active. This type of mite is far more difficult to treat than the Sarcoptic mite because it lays deep under the skin and sometimes even skin scrapings cannot confirm it. Stronghold will not treat Demodectic Mange and Advocate is hit and miss.
The only treatment that I have found works every time with this type of mange mite is Pro-Meris which is another spot-on treatment. Although the smell of it is rank! It is relatively new on the market but is fab for this problem. Smile

Frank has been moved next door to the prep room so that he can have more interaction with people. He has settled very quickly here and enjoys watching the world go by as the staff get on with their day. I would imagine that he enjoys the extra treats on offer too!!!

Here is Frank with his fave toys ever...burst footballs!
He spent AGES trying to get both footballs in his mouth and then proudly paraded them about the place, until he placed them carefully on the floor and weed all over them.  Rolling Eyes

Took Frankie out for a walk today - it's the first time I've met him and your heart melts for this poor little boy who has truly been through it.  I'm sure he has improved a lot since he arrived at kennels, but he still has a way to go.  He has the most amazing amber colour sad eyes.

He wasn't that keen to go for a walk, but after a little persuasion and a bit of a grunt he was up for it.  He seemed to enjoy his walk in the sunshine and when I left the kennels this afternoon he was taking a well earned siesta in his basket.
newie244

Frankie

I took Frank out for a walk Monday and Wednesday this week, on Monday we went to the Cafe, he is lovely to walk, doesn't pull hard just plods on in determined fashion, no harness required.
Outside the Cafe I secured him to the concrete base of the bench tables while I darted inside (as I was on my own), I did wonder if I would see a table being dragged into the Cafe if he tried to follow me, but he was fine, sitting in the shade of the table being admired by various clientel of the the establishment. Laughing
After a bottle of water each we wandered back to the kennels, he seemed to remember the route quite well so on Wednesday I changed the route to throw him out a bit, instead of following the road we dived off left along the footpath, he didn't batter an eyelid, he just continued walking in the direction he was pointing, I thought the 'off road' experience would be good for him with more things to investigate and sniff and he seemed to respond well.
He really is a lovely guy, although he seems almost reluctent to come out of his kennel at first, once on the lead he's great and responds really well to being fussed. Very Happy
Smiffy

What a lovely looking dog, but such a sad life he has led until now.  Let us know when he has been properly assesed, although I doubt he's had much interaction with children Sad good luck Frank. Love the name too...
newie244

Frankie

Arrived at the kennels today and Frank seemed to be full of beans. I put him on his lead and he was off!
Instead of the usual 1m walk we do, I took him on the 2m one to see how his energy levels were.
He started off at a faster than usual pace (a quick plod) and continued it for the entire walk! He wasn't distracted by the cattle or chickens and only gave a passing glance to the local farms Collie who came down the driveway barking.
Frankie really seemed to enjoy today, he seems to be getting brighter in himself and definately doesn't look as sad/grumpy as the 1st time I saw him.
xxlynne

Must have been cheered up meeting Tim this morning... the Vet..sorry about the jab! Now 1st vax'd.
newie244

Frankie

First walk of the day today was Frankie, we set out on the 2m walk, Frankie struting his stuff at his quick plod pace.
He really seems to be getting fitter each time I walk him, he likes to kept tension in the lead but doesn't pull, sort of like letting you know he's deciding the route!
At the turnround point of the walk we opened a gate for the local farmers tractor to exit the field, the farmer got out to thank us and have a chat, Frank was all over him demanding attention and a fuss.
The return journey was good, he will stop and wait when told to, when cars are passing, but 'sit' is falling on deaf ears.
This boy is the main man!

And obviously there are no favourites are there?  Wink

Very pleased with Frank's walk today. He lead me out  no hesitation or refusal as in the past.  He was willfull in his decision making but he was curbed not to take me over the hills and far away.  We had cuddles when we sat down and there was a definite smile there whilst I stroked his head and talked sweet verse to him.  He now knows this is a passing phase and his home will come soon!!!!
newie244

Frankie

Oh Dear, today has been a very stressful day for Frank.
I took him out today as my last walk of the day, we started out well, he was at quick plod pace, at the bottom of the drive he refused to turn left, the shorter Cafe walk, he insisted on turning right, the longer walk.
We were quite happy plodding along, I stopped to make a fuss of him at the turnaround point and water him, which was fine, we then set off back to the kennels. After about 500yds he suddenly started gasping for breath and staggering across the road. I got him onto the grass bank in the shade of the bushes where he collapsed from heat exhaustion.
Emma arrived in her car and we got him back to the kennels where he was doused in cool wet towels, after about 10 mins he was up and about again, a bit wobbly, but ok.
I phoned back later this afternoon and Emma assured me he was now fine, eating and playing with his toys.
I'll be taking him out earlier in the day when it's cooler, and insisting he goes on the shorter walk for a few weeks.
EmmaSemple

Poor ol' Frank!

He really was quite poorly, but once he had been cooled off with wet towels, allowed to cool off in the shade and had an electric fan on him to cool him even more, his heart rate slowed alot and he calmed enough to breathe properly.
The problem with heat stroke is that the body goes into shock and the more the dog gasps for breath, the more the dog panics because they can't get air into their lungs and the hotter they get.
Frank then had lots of soaking wet towels laid all over the floor of his kennel and we left the fan on him for the rest of the afternoon.
He is now back to normal and as soon as he stood up he was looking about for his tea.

Frank is on restricted walks now due to his health status and fitness level. In very hot or muggy weather it would be better to take Frank into the paddock where he can go at his own pace but still have some one-to-one with the one person that he seems to take notice of...Mark of course!  Laughing

Frankie

Well after Mondays excitement I decided that today I'd give Frank a little quality one-to-one time. On arrival this morning I went straight over to his kennel to make a fuss of him,he spent about 10mins rolling over on his back wanting his tummy tickled, when I went to leave he sat in front of the gate refusing to budge!
After walking two others I returned to Frank and took him over to the paddock to let him run about a bit, I produced a squeaky ball I'd bought for him especially, he loved it, he didn't do as I'd expected and burst it, he just ran around with it in his mouth very gently, he tried to pick up another ball in his mouth at the same time which was very entertaining Very Happy
Plenty of fussing, stroking and attention for the boy today, not too much exercise in the heat. He seemed very happy and contented when I left him today.... love5
ali12345

So glad you and Frank had a much better day today Smile
newie244

Frankie

Another day like Wednesday, a big fuss in Franks kennel on my arrival, lots of tummy tickling Laughing
After walking the other dogs I took Frank over to the paddock for more one to one time.
I took his 2 footballs with us and this proved highly entertaining as he actually managed to reproduce his earlier mentioned trick of getting both footballs in his mouth at once, only this time he didn't pee over them!
I actually managed to get him to 'leave' his football today, only very briefly, but it's a start. Very Happy
newie244

Frankie

Come on Frankie, Smile!!

Had some more 1-2-1 time with Frankie in the paddock today, he's certainly coming along, he needs someone to take him on, even into foster home for a while just to make a massive change in this boys life.
newie244

How could anyone resist this face??
ollie&bex

Frank you are an inspiration... with all that you have had to deal with you can still manage to give us the most wonderful smile, bless you! Stevie's Mum XX
newie244

Frankie

More 1-2-1 in the paddock today, running around with his footballs.
Frank is certainly getting fitter, but he still gets affected by the heat, at least in the paddock he can stop when he gets too hot.
Seemed to enjoy his time today. Very Happy
newie244

Frankie

Frankie managed his favourite trick today, getting two footballs in his mouth at the same time! Shocked
He seemed to enjoy his time in the paddock again, until the weather cools a bit he'll be in there and not walking I'm afraid, although he is definately getting fitter Wink

We don't believe you ... we need photographic evidence LOL!

Joking aside, many people are following his progress and have said that can see how much he has improved from the first pics to the recent ones.  They have been touched by the sorry state that Frank was in when he came into rescue. Would be good to be able to post some pics of him playing and having a cuddle. A video clip would be even better.  Appreciate anything you can do.  Smile

Would love to see this guy settled in a special home and living a dogs dream of a life.
EmmaSemple

On Thursday Frank was treated with Pro-Meris which is the only spot on treatment that I have found treats Demodectic Mange in one hit. He had been treated with Stronghold before so we had to wait out the month before Pro-Meris could be used.
His skin on his legs, feet and chest was still very red and sore and by Friday it had calmed alot. He is also on allergy tablets to try and take away the itch which has worked but these still weren't treating the mite that just wouldn't shift.
I hope to go in on Monday and find an even newer and improved Frank as by then it will be very apparent if this new treatment has worked.

Took Frank into the paddock today but it was soooo hot, we didn't stay there too long before he was looking for the shade, so we went back after a short while, not before he'd done the two ball trick for all his fans though Laughing

Frankie

Frankie actually got out for a walk today  hello1
As he was allegedly living with other dogs before, Emma suggested we try him with another dog, so we went walking with Tiger Lily (and Alison).
They walked along perfectly togther, Frank ignoring TL, and TL sniffing around Frank.
We only did a short walk because it was still hot today, so we stopped for water in the shade, TL did have a little pop at Frank but Frankie behaved very well he just sat there looking at her.
They walked back to the kennels perfectly, no issues at all.
Once back in his kennel I made a huge fuss of Frank whilst I was squatting down, at this point he actually climbed up me put his front paws on my shoulders, and rested his head against mine, as if he was cuddling me love4

Fred R

Just to say Frank has made himself at home. Meant to post a few pictures but my PhotoStudio2000 is playing up. Will post pictures once sorted - although no idea how.
Anybody know of any software which can be downloaded, preferably for free?
ali12345

Hi Fred - I just use Windows Photo Gallery software plus paint.net - don't know if you have the first but you can download the second.
So is Frank with you? foster or rehome?

Frank has gone to Fred as a foster dog. It is very important that we get an idea of how Frank is in the home and (after just having a chat with Fred) it seems that he is perfect!  Very Happy

Day One

Frank is an excellent backseat driver! Having surveyed the motorway traffic for a while he got bored and just settled down to have a kip. No attempt trying to get to the front seat. The harness didn’t seem to bother him.

Obviously, the garden had to be inspected thoroughly to make sure there weren’t any Aliens lurking in the bushes. And gentleman that he is he did his business at the bottom of the garden behind a bush.

Next the house: again a thorough inspection from top to bottom. I had to pop out to get his dinner and had to leave him for 20-25 mins. I left and returned without making a fuss and Frank was quite unfazed. When I came back and opened the gate there was just a single bark and that was that.

Frank is very affectionate - but not clingy. I was sitting in the conservatory which was rather too hot even for my liking and sensible Frank decided the kitchen stone floor was just what the doctor ordered. He knew I was within reach but he couldn’t actually see me. Not bad for a first day.

While I had a little “refreshment” and nibbles  Frank just sat there - waiting - nothing was offered - he just lay down at my feet. No begging at all.

He loves sitting on dining room chairs with his heavy head resting on the table. And although there were edible things within reach he showed no interest. The only thing he has “vandalized” so far is the bathroom cleaning sponge.

He had his Winnalot at five which he almost but not quite finished. And because of the heat he had lots to drink.

He had a good scratch at the scabs on his neck which started to bleed a bit. Emma suggested applying Savlon which I did and while about it applied Sudocreme to his paws. Again no problem whatsoever. He was in the garden with his toys but has decided one of his footballs should be with him indoors. Although very placid and laidback - nobody should forget he is all “bull” breed. Tried a bit of tug o war but stopped almost straight away as I could see he was getting a bit hyper.

Well, altogether a successful day. Weather permitting I’ll take him for an early morning walk tomorrow.

PS. Will try and keep Day Two shorter.  Wink
PPS. Just noticed Frank seems to like Sudocreme - it's all gone.

Mixed emotions for me today sad11  cheers

On one hand I'm sooooo happy for Frank that he's got a foster home, on the other I'll miss him terribly.

Hopefully he'll prove himself the perfect housemate, but be warned Fred, Frank snores!!!

This shows how fed-up Frank was with kennel life earlier this week...

Fred R

I am absolutely knackered. After dinner Frank suddenly remembered that he was still a puppy and we have been playing hide and seek ever since. His new “bestest” friend is a ball he carries about with him non-stop, although daring and wanting you to take it from him. In typical Staffy fashion he always looks in the opposite direction to which one is pointing - always good for a laugh!   Very Happy

Day Two

Put Frank to bed around 11 and lo and behold there was just a brief whimper (less than five minutes) when he decided he was too tired to make a fuss and presumably went out like a light. When I went downstairs at 6am he was still fast asleep in his basket. Then out into the garden and for our first walk which went ok except on the way back he suddenly sat down and refused to budge - slight problem as he’d picked the middle of the road! I told him it wasn’t a good idea - and he eventually deigned to shift himself. Should also mention that he was clean over night with no mess. He then had his breakfast - and demanded to be entertained. He also insisted we watch Wimbledon. Altogether a sensible dog who sees no point in slumming it on the floor when there are perfectly serviceable chairs and settees available.

Day Three

Tiny Number One accident yesterday morning. Probably put him to bed too early (10pm-ish) not to mention the hot weather. His personality is beginning to emerge. He now adopts a play posture and vocalises. On our early morning walk he got hold of the lead and wanted to play tug of war and wouldn’t let go. However at least he trotted along home merrily without sitting down in the middle of the road refusing to budge. Very selective hearing! He knows “sit” perfectly well but will sit only if there is a treat on offer - otherwise he just looks at you as if to say “why the heck should I!!??”. He isn’t food aggressive. Put down his food, take it away and he patiently waits until you put it down again. Wonderful!

Playing tug of war all the time and throwing balls seemed to be the only games Frank knew. I decided something more stimulating was called for and hid some of his toys in various places including in trees. At first he didn’t know what was expected but soon cottoned on and enjoyed the new game.
It’s just too funny watching him peering up and trying to climb trees looking for hidden treasures even if there aren’t any.  Poor boy!

Will try and get a new picture posted.

Another milestone!

Left Frank to his own devices for three hours today, YES, THREE HOURS, without any problems.
When I came back - not a sound - I don't think he had stirred once, but just "been resting quietly".
Shall extend it to four hours next but am already convinced that too won't be a problem. I don't think he's ever heard of Separation Anxiety.  Rolling Eyes

The SA word had been our main concern.. X against that one!

Excellent news.
I was hoping it was kennel stress. Obviously he feels relaxed in the home.

Way to go Frank. Very Happy

Was upstairs and heard a dog barking. Can’t be Frank - he doesn’t do “barking”. Went downstairs to check - and there he was standing in the middle of the lawn barking furiously, like a proper watchdog, at some noises coming from heaven knows where. However, he soon got bored - probably too much like hard work.  Rolling Eyes

Frank came back into HIS kennel yesterday. Fred was only able to offer a short term foster but OH how wonderful it was for them both. Frank is as though he has always been there as is waiting Newbie Mark's return from hols. Frank is looking good his skin recovery is slow but definate.  Wink

Thank you Fred for giving Frank such a great holiday. If all these dogs could have respite into lovely homes now and again it would be a great help to them.

I am sure Frank has had a lovely time over the Wimbledon season with you Fred. Thanks again
