Fireworks Night Bah Humbug!

Fed up! Got home, changed my cloths, put my coat on, gathered my mobile, key
& poo bags together.  Put an assortment of leads and harnesses on my 4 pack and headed for the front door.  Opened the front door, four dogs went out and I put one foot over the threshold ... at that precise moment someone let off a rocket! Sadie & Holly almost turned inside out with fear, Tex decided he was going to take the offending rocket on single handed & win so reared up on two legs to give it a seeing to and Lady joined in not really knowing what was going on, but deciding to be part of it anyway!

Needless to say the walk was off and the telly is now turned up loud to block out the noise!

I HATE FIRE WORKS!

They can ban them as soon as they like  Evil or Very Mad . I hate this time of year. Millenium was like a war zone - even I thought the roof was coming in Evil or Very Mad

Since the fireworks started (about two weeks ago) Missy's won't toilet in the garden which means the hall carpet is getting another hammering and cold winter mornings have a new dimension of unpleasantness. Rolling Eyes

This will be my first year in ages where I don't think I have to worry because I don't have Ollie anymore. I would be surprised if Levi is bothered but he does not need any more excuses for me to fail at housetraining him  Confused
belles mum

Belle is a scaredy c*t with most things, but fireworks are one of the few things that dont bother her (hope thats not jinx'd it now!)

Little Tara wasn't scared of the fireworks here on Saturday and Sunday nor the sound of the ranges. However, she did check out the grandfather clock, the cuckoo clock and the Napoleon's hat clock... She 'nudged' the cuckoo clock's weights just in case.

My JRT used to totally ignore fireworks but the JRTX loved them - she found stuff like that exciting. She liked thunder too.  Shocked

I don’t know who is more stressed in our house........we had fireworks for Dahwalli, we had fireworks for Halloween and now the next 4 days for Bonfire night....after every plug in the house has Dap, the water bowl has Rescue Remedy, we have strong sedatives from the Vet and STILL Bud is beyond fear and into heart racing, pacing, panting, crying, digging the furniture....we are only allowed to give him 2 tablets 4 at the most and they have had no effect........if anyone has any ideas how we can control his heart rate I would be grateful. We have tried feeding him pasta, mash potato, cheese all the treats you can think of...even when the fireworks are not going off he paces and pants for hours...last night I finally got to bed about 1am....I have started to put him in a cage with a blanket over which stops the pacing and digging but doesn’t help the crying and panting...we are in a terraced house and both sides have a Firework party one tonight and one Saturday................oh what joy!!!!!

Last year Vinnie ate his way through a door and badly grazed the top of his head trying to get through the hole he'd made.
This year have been dosing him up with 'Serene-Um' tablets. So far so good. Only a puddle or two on kitchen floor where he is too scared to go out through dog flap after dark

We seem to have a strange dog...he likes them! Watches them out the window, loves his walks at this time of the year.

Ever since we adopted him (two and half years ago today actually - I think) he's always been unconcerned about noises...all he wants to do is go and see what it is.

Lucy not bothered , but Billy is terrified - and he has a dodgy ticker  Sad

Vet prescribes ACP but we also had some Diazepam from last time he slipped his disc and so we have tried that tonight - he is much better.  Still trembling but at least settled in one place.

I so wish they would ban them all except for organised displays - at least you can be prepared for those.

The trouble with forums is that you don't know all the facts, so if this doesn't apply, my apologies in advance.

My dally, Morse, used to shake so badly that he lost control of his legs.

What helped was clearing out under the stairs and leaving beds and bedding in there and having the door just open, so they could retreat.

The other thing that helped was to make sure that we all ignored the panic as much as possible, only rewarding signs of calm and control. It takes time but they do learn to be calmer if you just ignore it. But I know how hard it is, and my kids found it really difficult because they were so distressed by the dogs distress.
I found the desensitization CD totally useless. Mine can tell the difference, and they find rockets (not on there) more distressing than the bangers (which are)

I was going to say in theory 'flooding' ought to work and I assume the desensitising CD aims to do just that. I haven't lived with a dog that has been particularly bothered by fireworks - as I say the JR ignored them and the JRTX found them exciting. I don't remember our dogs when I was a kid being scared either so I'm not sure what I'd do. I think something along the lines of reclaimingrebus - ie attempting to ignore the  panic, put on some distracting sounds and trying to distract them with something else. I imagine the problem is that if one dog starts panicking there's a tendency to pass the panic on to the others...

It isn't much help but my sympathetic thoughts are with you all.

Hating fireworks

Rhianna seems to be slowly getting over the need to protect the house from them - she has responded to being told no.  However, she is sitting very close and has such a bad case of anxiety wind that I am considering moving out.  sad3

Thank goodness Lucie is not bothered in the slightest by fireworks but my last dog, Dee was petrified by them. I really didn't know better so i used to try and reassure/cuddle her (which obviously made her worse!!) We FINALLY realised that if we ignored her and pretended like nothing was happening, she was much better. She was still scared, but less so and got over it much quicker. It is the hardest thing in the world to do though when all of your instincts are to comfort them

Still have the telly volume up high until the WHSmith advert comes on, then we quickly drop the volume ... it's got whizzy fireworks in it and Tex wants to eat the screen!  Rolling Eyes

When will the nightmare end!  Evil or Very Mad
Spellbound

I don't think Summer has decided if she's scared or not. I'm surrounded by temples and lunatics so there's fireworks all the time for about 2 weeks, I dunno.
First day of them she kept barking, all her fur up and growling but wouldn't go outside while they were going off. She then has days, like today, where she's not bothered, curled up on the sofa asleep right now.
Last night the people over the back seemed to be aiming them at my house and she had a good bark when we stood in the kitchen and watched them, then decided that was too much effort and went back to sleep.
No matter where she is on the nervous scale, she refuses to go outside if they big ones are going off, she's ok with the crackly ones though but would prefer to not be outside with them if she can help it.

I have to time the pee times now or she wont go at all until about 1am. It does worry me that she'll get a problem with her bladder if she holds it so long... part of me would prefer her to pee on the floor.
