Dog InsuranceHi everyone
Linda and Denise's mum here (still grinning when I say that )
Now we are all settling in we want to sort out some insurance but have no idea what to do and which to choose.
Could anyone share their experiences with us to help us on our way?
Linda obviously has had some lumps (benign thank god) and has a kidney and ovary joined together - do we need to declare this?
Also do we need to declare that they are rescue dogs with no history?
Look forward to hearing your thoughts - there are so many different products out there we really dont know what to go for ...
Ps Linda is snuggled on my knee and grunting peacefully as I type this

we have Tesco insurance for Belle, they are good value (about £7 a month) and paid out very quickly, to the limit that we could claim - £2500 when she poisoned herself (fully recovered now thank God). Not sure how they are with pre-existing or continuing conditions but definitely worth investigating...

My tip is to make sure that the cover you take out is for 'lifetime' as most policies only cover a condition for a year. Which means that after the 12 month policy is renewed the existing condition will no longer be covered. Plus if you went elsewhere its still classed as pre-existing and automatically excluded.
So read the small print - you need 'lifetime' not 12 month cover. I know More Than do lifetime - I am sure there are others too.

DO read the small print!! A lot of policies appear 'cheap' but there is always a reason. Most will seem good value and after a year the premiums raise dramatically. Also, a lot of companies hide in the small print that they will only treat a condition for a year and then they stop so any long term disorders wont be covered.
I had a Tesco policy once and that is exactly what happened. I then changed to Petplan. Some people think it is expensive - I pay around £75 per month for 3 dogs but the premiums have barely gone up in 8 years. The excess goes up (£120 for an older dog) and I pay 20% of the treatment for the older one. BUT - they settle directly with my vet, they settle very quickly, have never quibbled, and they cover every illness for life. They also cover for teeth - I dont know any other policy that does.
Another thing to consider - if your dog is treated and dies some policies make you continue to pay for the rest of your policy year even though the dog is dead. Petplan cancel the policy from the date of death. Check this when you take out a policy. Hope this helps!

We have M&S - they have been brilliant with payouts, espically as they have paid more to the vets than we have paid to them!

I would second the "read the small print" advice.
We are with Pet Plan and they have lifetime cover (i too have heard stories of some of the supermarket policies only covering for 12 months). We have always been happy with Pet Plan and i have heard very good things about Direct Line too
BTW: I am very jealous!! I LOVE Linda and Denise!!!! You are very very lucky!!

PS Don't forget to ask for a discount if you are insuring two at once! They offered me 20% off as a new customer if I would insure two pets.
