What lovely pictures. Can't help wondering if Derek is a Staffie/EBT cross. A lot of white EBTs tend to be deaf.

High percentage of white bull breeds eg staffies; EBTs and boxers are born deaf

Thanks for that interesting link, Ali. I studied BSL up to level 2 some years ago - maybe it’s time to “revisit”?

Met Derek today and he is such a calm boy. He is sharing with Rags and his calm approach to life is modelling so well for Rags who is a different boy. Walked the 2 of them with Donna. Derek hardly pulls at all. Met and sniffed the cows:
Seems like a well balanced little staffy boy.

He should be such a good influence. Great for both of them to have the company.

DerekI met Derek for the 1st time today, what a smashing boy. He was really calm in the kennel and was easy to put the harness on. I tried the Halti on him but he didn't like it at all, in the end he was scratching so hard at it I took it off before he hurt himself.
Once out on the walk he was brilliant, he would sometimes get distracted by the cattle and the horses and just stare at them, I found the best way to get his attention back was to just stroke his head and he'd trot along again. On the way back to the kennels came a brilliant moment, as in the earlier photos the cattle had come down to the road, Derek decided he wanted to interact with them, I kept him on a tight lead just in case, the cattle leant through the fence to sniff him and licked his face, amazing!

Excellent Mark. Zack was just the same with the cows. those cows / bulls are funny. They either charge you quite aggressively or make friends. I think Derek and his lovely calm demeanor must have chilled the cows today.

Today I walked Derek for the first time and I am in love. I really think he is a lovely dog, he's definatly English bull terrier mixed with Staffy cause he has the little bald patch on his forhead EBTs get when they are teenagers! And he does exactly what my EBT (who is deaf) does he lies flat on his front in the grass and pulls himself along with his back legs flat to the floor, its so sweet.
If I could have a dog at my flat I would have derek. There isn't much difference with a deaf dog because dogs use their nose and eyes so much and they read body language so well that they are easy to train!
For a young dog he's very calm, easy to get his lead and harness thing on too, he didn't jump up or anything. Also he didn't pull on the lead! Perfect companion.
Cause he's got staffy in him he's got a great loving side to him too, very cuddley and sat right next to me on the grass for a break in the walk. Here are some photos of the day
Thats the english bull terrier stretch!

DerekI took Derek out today in the company of a new arrival, Mindy, a Boxer X (and Zoe). What a fine pair they made there were no problems with either dogs, Derek kept looking across at Mindy to make sure he was ahead in the 'race', but apart from that you'd have thought they'd been living together for months!
When traffic approached I tried to get Derek to sit, after a couple of treats he did this to hand command, I found you had to stand in front of him to get eye contact, if you tried the hand signal from the side he ignored it.
A lovely walk in the sunshine, he'll be sorely missed when he goes to his new home, but his new owners have got a star!
