Deacon Staffie 07.08 Westerham Kent

Deacon is in a Yorkshire pound and was facing  certain death BUT we have come forward for him on the strength of our sponsored walk today..so Deacon is the mascot of the day. Keep on walking...
xxlynne

I was expecting Deacon to be a medium to large dog judging by the above photo.  In fact he is the same size as Bobby. Small medium. He is young, with a red brindle coat and a beautiful head.  His energy is calm and hence so much easier to photograph.  Wink The camera lady was smiling, knowing Deakon was being protrayed in all his beauty, body and soul. For starters!

Deacon, what a gorgeous boy.......such a beautiful colour as well....

Thank you rescue remedies for answering my call to help him.......I hope his new family comes to get him very soon.
CloClo

That is one of the most beautiful staffie-types I have ever seen! I hope he finds a lovely home soon.

Deakon

I collected Deacon on Saturday from the pound along with Rosco. On the basis that he seemed calm, he got to go on the back seat while Rosco was crated. He is incredibly affectionate and actually didn't want to leave the staff at the pound. Once he was in the car and we had a LOT of cuddles he relaxed and by the time we got him to his new home, he was snoring on the front seat with a proprietary paw on my leg (he did have a harness on - I just gave up with the back seat!). Unfortunately I chose the day that the M1 was shut for 2 hours but both dogs took to the travel "doggy" bottle I had and my air con works well but I was tired when we finally all got home. Deacon is a lovely boy, very sad eyes who really looks at you, really very calm for a young full boy staffie (and when he and Rosco bumped into each other when being loaded, there was no snapping). His coat wasn't great but Rachel and co had their eyes on giving him a good bath (which has clearly happened judging by the photos!) My own 2 staffs reallygave me the once over when I got home ... now if I could persuade them to add to the pack...

Deacon had an upset day yesterday..didnt want to get in the crate and then! Snip!! but now it is all behind him and he can relax into his time at the kennels and have some fun. Good with dogs..lovely boy.

Deacon had trip out today to Westerham. He met a wonderful family who had fallen deeply for his photo..but nothing compared with him in the 'fur'.  Deacon met their cat really well; licked all the children with care and consideration and we all had a lovely walk over the park nearby.

Deacon is having his second vax on Friday pm then is going to join 'his' family for a 2 week period to see how the children and cat settle. We are all very confident. Laughing

Wooohoooo!! Way to go Deacon!!  Good luck boy, have a wonderful life.......

Hush...Deacon's special family have just joined the forum...update imminent!
alex&suzi

hello everyone after a week with the gorgeus deacon we thought we would update his thread.
well what can i say he is a brilliant dog and has really come out of his shell.
he is toilet trained and he has had no accidents in the house and walks fab on a lead to heal always checking your still there. he sleeps all night in his bed in our room and has learnt the rules of not on beds or sofas although if he can he will still try and get away with it lol. he must of had some training as he knows sit and has just learnt 'wait' when we get to a road. he is fine with other dogs that we have met. the cat and him are not that brilliant together though, Deacon just wants to chase him if he moves so the cat tends to avoid him. the cat has the run of the house at night with deacon in our room, during the day Deacon is not allowed upstairs this seems to be working. overall we are so pleased with him he is so loving and is happiest when he is having cuddles and fuss. when he is left he barks a couple of times and then seems to settle in his bed.
The only issue we have is that he trys to puppy bite alot this is in no way aggresive he just trys to use his mouth alot which makes our children nervous, when he does it we tell him no and push him away, it is getting better but is something we are watching. he also stands and barks at you if he gets told no when he is a bit more excited like a stroppy teenager backchatting  lol. so if anyone has any suggestions on how to stop those two things we would really appreciate it.
overall we are completly in love with Deacon he is a very special dog and the children adore him so heres to him getting even better in the next week . xx

The best thing to do when a dog starts to back chat you is very calmly take the dog out of the room you are in and make him stay on his own for at least five minutes.
The worst punishment you can give a dog is to take him out of his 'pack' (you and your family). He is at the moment standing his ground with you and stomping his feet if you like.
Let him in after five minutes and if he does it again then repeat. It seems bizarre, but it is something that works for many different issues. However, it is important that you do this EVERY TIME it happens as continuity is important when training.

Also, if he mouths you tell him 'No!', everyone get up and walk away. The game is over. After a bit of time he will associate biting with the end of play and will learn to mind his manners.

Sorry about the cat.  Sad Unfortunately it is very hard to cat test as we cannot risk letting the cats out amongst the dogs in case anything were to happen.

hi thanks for the reply we have been doing that so reasurring to know we are doing the right thing he often does it when he is excited and we bring him in put the gate agcross the door and leave him there till hes calmer then he can join us again he seems to be understanding lol we will see how it goes. as for the cat hes standing his ground so im sure things will get better i have had them sitting next to each other in the garden taking it in turns to get treats so i think its a love hate thing . he is a lovely dog and every day he seems more settled and part of the family. xxx

Deacon seems to be starting to fit in with family life, he is a pleasure around the house and on walks.
He is still trying to challenge when he thinks he can get away with it, however i think we are starting to recognise the signs and are able to nip it in the bud. We are all growing in confidence and ordering the pack accordingly.
Hopefully he will continue to learn the rules and enjoy family life, we all love him to bits and are enjoying the addition to our family.

some more pictures of Deacon so u can all see how he is getting on.
these are pictures taken on his first walk with alex's mum and dads staffie cross Sam. They got on really well although Deacon did just want to play and sam being slightly older just wanted to concentrate on his walk!

also a picture of deacon and carys relaxing and watching tv.

things are going really well and he is much more settled and his challeges against us have decreased alot it was on average happening a couple of times a day and now we are having days with no tantrums and he does what he is asked to do no probs. it is still an issue but it is now one we are feeling much more confident with.

deacon is feeling slightly sorry for himself at the moment as he has developed a limp on his back leg and although he walks on it he tends to hold it up when standing we have not walked him for a couple of days and we are monitoring it hopefully he has just strained it if not we will take him to the vets on monday for a check up.

How's Deakon doing?
xxlynne

Regular contact with Deacon's family. He is doing really well great off the lead now; great with other dogs; great with the children. Can get into a mood when told off as though he is used to telling it how it is and telling his owner off as though he is having his say! But can be managed and bought around. His family are full of praises and know that as time goes by he will have less need to react to 'No's'

Ah that is good news.  Very Happy

hi all just thought i would update deaconds thread. he is doing well and has settled more and more he still has his moments but we are working on that think it will just take time. the kids love him and he is very tolerant of there over entusiastic hugs when they are watching tv he stretches out across all there laps.

we love him to pieces was wondering if any one had any advice on one bit of behaviour that has only just developed and i dont know why several times now he has disapered chasing traffic he is fine with cars driving past and walking down roads thats not an issue but if we are in a park or field and he can hear a  busy road or catches sight of fast moving traffic through a hedge he goes mad and trys to reach it.

im a bit worried because he has been brilliant off the lead and his recall even with another dogs around has been much improved but in the park the other day without warning he got through a fence and crossed two fields to get to the road and disapered from sight. luckily as i was looking for him a farmer brought him back saying he had found him some way up in the road. i am going to have to keep him on a lead but his energy levels are much better if he has chased a ball or had a run. so any ideas on how to tell him traffic is bad ?

otherwise things are going well. we did have a row with a man in the park yesterday who told us he had to now put his dog on a lead because it sometimes went for dogs like deacon as deacon was a fighting dog like a pit bull. and he was surprised we had one with 3 young kids etc etc we politly told him any dog could turn and that deacon wasent dog aggressive and was on a lead anyway he started saying they could bite your face off we walked away. his little dog that he had'nt bothered putting on a lead then followed us all the way up the path sniffing deacons bum. deacon was good as gold and ignored it. the man then had to come and get it and carried on trying to argue that staffs were a menace to society. we told him to go home and google the breed and find out there considered a nanny dog and are not people aggresive. arggg what an aragant man.

never mind deacon behaved perfectly until he had gone then tried to get the traffic on an ajacent road lol.
