Candy 'Lakeland' 14 monthsCandy sweet Candy...who loved tooo deeply and was loved sooo deeply.
Candy's life was only happy when in the presence of her loved ones. We had to let you go.. to run free from your fears..free from your anxieties..Claire and Clair gave you such a wonderful life but your suffering was hard to bear For yoursake we needed to offer you Peace; you needed perhaps a new beginning..perhaps to become your own special star to shine forever..
Candy's thread is below
Candy is a Lakie who was bought as a present for someone's mother as a surprized. She has been living with a Bichon and now both bitches are on heat and have had a fight. They were thinking of rehoming Brandy anyway so now she needs to go....Daughter can't take her in as her staffie bitch is on heat!
She is being delivered on Saturday which gives us 2 days to create a room in the house for her.

Candy dear Candy..she hasn't settled as yet has been yepping and barking whenever left. She must have settled for about 2 hours last night but started again 4am. We both had our coffee with her 6am Left her to get dressed and she has nearly bit through a door surround.
Now in the kitchen barking barking but surprizingly the dogs in the lounge haven't reacted as yet. Lots and lots of gentle walks and calming energy applied today..and we'll see how she fares.
Yes buy a sweet little fluff ball puppy for your mother... as a surprize and she'll get a shock as she observes the needs of a terrier pup and does very little to meet them. Then the confused adolescent emerges...having been treated as a BABY. Candy is in the phase of Terrier tantrums | Quote: | | I need you please don't leave me yep yep yep | She doesn't now how to employ her energies she is at sea..
They knocked at everyones door she had to go now ...but noone would/ could take her in..well she is in safe hands now but currently have to stop her from damaging herself. And before you ask yes she has Rescue Remedy in her water.

Candy oh dear dear Candy. Another night she has barked ALL night. Gone down to single barks about every 20 secs...2-3 am but now back to repetitive yep yep yep pitious cries. Heard me up and started to rattle the kitchen door and attack the door frame again. Fortunately she doesn't appear to hurt herself. Also rather than join in the other dogs are strangely quiet.
For the first time I'm discussing with the vet a mild sedative as she is distraught. Only stops when you go to her then frantic jumping and restless contact

Hi Lynne,
goodness poor you and poor Candy!
I bet her hormones are all over the place
Do you know any t-touch? I wondered if that might help - the touches, and also a wrap to make her feel a bit more secure?
She's hormonal, learned defence aggression, lost her pack, her home, and been brought to a house of other dogs that she can smell but not get to. It sounds as if she needs alot of 1:1 tlc and back to tiny puppy basics with the seperation What silly silly people grr !!!

Candy report: It is working having Candy in the kitchen. We have found dogs with separation anxiety fair well there as we are coming and going all day so they are ever anticipating and also coming to terms with the STAY..leaving..repetitively. By afternoon she had given up trying to gnaw her way through the doorframe (serious damage to repair in the future). She was also found settled in her bed when entering on many occassions..and perhaps on 1 or 2 occassions stayed in her bed on exiting. Most times we have to hold her collar whilst going out the room.
Got skullcap and vallerian tabs from the vet ..had a sense she would settle anyway out of sheer exhaustion but gave her 3 as directed and she was settled by 10.30 and didn't start up again until 5.15 when Lorenzo got up. She is yepping off and on as I type. Poor love we both feel for her she is such a love just so desperate for company but she is going to gain a sense of herself and value herself as an individual..this is a very belated weaning period for her..painful but essential. No doubt we will have some lovely walks today and she will begin settle more. Listen...all is quiet!!!

Oh Lynne, she sounds like she is on the right road which is good. It is so hard not to have them with you all the time though and not give in when they are scratching the door at 12.00, 1.00, 2.30 etc etc.

Candy is suffering from Type 1 (in my book) unweaned Sep Anx. (Type 2 is gut full of having been left Sep Anx). Infact I think Candy still has her umbilical cord attached! She is looking for human food all the time, eats when hand-fed, hardly touches food voluntarily so am dropping human food into her bowl to attract her and mixing human food in with her food as she must be using up trillions of calories. When out all she wants is to run free round and round and then to be picked up..I am biting my lip and playing it cool but loving its hard all you want to do is pick her up and squeeze her...ofcourse I do when she has been good or sooo much needs it. I don't perscribe to different 'approaches' but use the learning which each dog offers to me; my training and practise as a therapist for 25 yrs and my Piscean intution to lead me.

Sweet Candy settling slowly still in pain and soo clingy. Trying to get food down her as she isn't eating enough for her high energy levels. Here she is ..she adopted our washing basket today and so having had great laughs with her, have made it into her bed with her blanket. She is so delighted with it and feels secure in the foetal position. Positioned it so you could also see some of her 'wild frame tearing' damage. She hasn't touch the frame for over 36 hours now..and that is despite having left her most of yesterday when out homing and collecting dogs.

Sorry to go on about her but she is such a vunerable little lamb. She is showing signs of settling and building trust in the situation. She has no possibility of nipping or biting humans despite often being in a desperate frame of mind which makes her so special. You can hold her by her collar whilst you slide out the door etc etc. She is still piping away when left but settles for periods and often found curled up in her basket.
Will need a devoted family who are accepting of her emotional nature and able to help her find her ownself. She has to learn to be alone and this is a good situation for her to do that. Its just living with her cries upsets you to your core..

Hi,
I was wondering as Candy seems to like the security of having something "around" her - would she be comfortable in a t-shirt / wrap ? these can be very comforting but are very much "for the right dog" if you see what i mean ... I would donate her one if you think she may accept wearing it and help with the initial "leaving" thing. I am so pleased to hear Candy is improving, it is heartbreaking hearing them cry isnt it (i try and 'cheat' myself into calling it singing) wuss that i am !!

Teashirt maybe an idea but I think her nest currently is helping and I don't really want to introduce anything that I would have to keep take off when walking because it made her odd... I am try to make her merge unnoticed in with the other dogs and people etc outside. Will think further on this.

CandyAdvert Revised on 3rd April as this little girl ahs come sooo far. Below is how she WAS
Candy
Candy is a 14 month old Lakeland terrier who was bought as a surprise for a mother who had a Bischon. Candy being a lively terrier was in fact a shock! She was babied and her terrier nature was dismissed to mis-demeanours..which became too much to bear when she had a scuffle with the Bischon ..due to seasonal hormones creating tensions. Candy has been in foster now for 3 weeks. She is getting over acute heart-felt separation anxiety. She now tolerates being left though can fall into the 'me me cry baby' pain driven mentality. Heart rendering to experience but she is settling down and becoming more content in her own company. She is such a dear and all you want to do is cuddle her..in fact that is all she has known and so tries to demand you to pick her up on her walks. Candy has come a long way in 3 weeks. She is now spayed; vac'd and chipped. Candy is non moult. She mixes with dogs outside and beginning to mix well inside.
Candy is picking up dog skills quite late but very fast. She is finding herself and gaining confidence with every day and every walk. She needs a family who have had terrier before and understand love is measured with management. She is high energy and needs an active life. She is climbing down from her Primadonna status into a happy, affectionate..fun loving; funny dog who'll have you is stitches. She does need someone around but would need to start with continuing the 'comfortable being left' from the start, else she'll start to dominate the agenda. Fostered in Richmond.
If you are looking for a companion dog Candy could offer you a whole new focus in life. Please visit our website click HERE and complete our questionnaire emailing it to questionnaires@rescueremedies.co.uk

Advert 3rd April
| Quote: | Candy
Candy is a 15 month old Lakeland Terrier who was bought as a surprise present and being a lively terrier was in fact a shock! She was babied and her terrier-nature was dismissed to mis-demeanours..which became too much to bear when she had a scuffle with the Bichon ..due to seasonal hormones creating tensions. Candy has been in foster since January. She has worked through separation anxiety and now tolerates being left at night and during the day. Candy has come a long way and is finding her delightful personality which is full of play, love and mischief! She mixes with dogs outside and can mix with dogs inside but if the door bell goes she can have a scuffle with a dog close by like high energy terriers often do..so better avoided... but she has good dog skills and has dog friends She is spayed; vac'd and chipped. Candy is non moult. Candy has found peace in herself..she plays with toys happily in a sunny garden..but is so much a people dog and so much wants to be with you.
Candy needs a family who have had terrier before and understand love is measured with management. She is high energy and needs an active life. However after 3/4 hour walk she settles and often has a sleep on return so her energy is easily dissipated. She is climbing down from her Prima-Donna status into a happy, affectionate..fun loving; funny dog who'll have you in stitches. She does need someone around but would need to start with continuing the 'comfortable being left' from the start, else she'll start to. She is delightful and will do well as an only pet..she plays with chew bones throwing them in the air and can bury them!Fostered in Richmond. |
Candy is transformed and ripe for homing. She can settle in the kitchen happily sitting in her bed as you walk in with a look oh there you are. She plays in the garden by herself and adores stalking the birds. She runs and runs on her walks and then 15 mins later settles into normal type busy terrier type walk. She laughs and laughs to be outside running free or around the garden. We rarely hear a peep from her over night. Occasionally she will be crying about 6.30-7 as Lorenzo leaves for walk. She is loving oh so loving and has her own special way of rubbing her cheek against yours when you cuddle her or as you tell her over and over again what a wonderful good good girl she is ...holding her hands she puffs up her chest and her eyes shine oh so bright. We have no reservation in giving her as much love as she needs. About once a week we hear her crying in the kitchen middle of the night..and I go down and its like she is locked in a dream and so relieved to see you and have reassurance "all is well all is well".
Also when she has been out for her run..then walk she settles immediately which is a lovely sign as though I'm satisfied..exhausted and feel calm. Her only problem is her housetraining has gone to pot. This is partly in her awareness of dogs around her in the garden; in the lounge and going through the hall. This I think disturbs her..she will often mark her bed with 'pooh'. She is ashamed when I discover this..we are very forgiving as she is under un-usual strain and coping very well. I'm sure her house training will come right once an only pet with the luxury of having the freedom of the house and garden.

Oh Candy is so lovely. Can be quite shy around strangers and a little wary at first but once she has decided on you WOW she is made for loving pure and simple!!! LOL
Such an amzing little girl who has just done such an amazing job of adapting and maturing. Really deserves such a loving home who will really really appreciate what an absolute treasure she is

Oh Candy...how lucky are you! Candy has taken her new owners by storm..but they somehow love her all the more for her 'raw' energy and skills...they are already making mega changes to their lives to accomodation sweet Candy. They have a sweet tooth!
Candy will be able to relax and build new skills. She took a giant step with ourselves and has it in her to take another, launching her into the active life style she always deserved...and was born for!
Missing her for all the right reasons...so so pleased for her and ofcourse Dee's usual hard hard work which made Candy's day happen

Having held my breath for a week and a little perturbed by this first email...Dee says there is lots of positives there but I'm feeling OH Candy come on my girl..you have a lot more skills than this..I am heartened by the second email..so can reveal both with all 4 paws still crossed for C C and C.
Knowing what a delightful little soul Candy is I'm convinced if they made it a week she is well into their hearts now..and sounds like they are both well into her big heart too So grateful to Claire and Clair for holding on in there..they will win a treasure as a result.

We have had good and bad days with Candy so far….
Sunday night we tried to leave her in the kitchen with her bed but she barked the house down so I eventually slept on the sofa and took her back to her bed each time she tried to jump up with me (she was very cute though and I could have happily had her tucked up with me!), eventually she was happy I was not going anywhere and she did sleep in her bed (well I think she did!)
Monday, we had a good hour walk in the morning but the rest of the day was very difficult, she did not want to know my dad ( I think this is because he came to the house and did not meet her out on a walk) and every time I went outside (even though she could see me through the window) she was not a happy girl. We had a pee on the sofa, and a poo upstairs. In the afternoon we went to the shops and I left her in the car for about 10 mins and again another pee. A great 2 hour walk in the evening though and she crashed out when she got home. We took her bed upstairs but she eventually ended up sleeping on the bed and out for a count!
I have taken her to work for the rest of the week, the tennis courts are not secure so I can’t let her run around in there unfortunately so it’s been a morning walk and then extra outside time during the day chasing a ball around the playing fields and a long walk/run in the evening. She seems very happy out on her walks with all the new smells and long grass fields, she is getting used to the horses and we have even got her jumping over some little jumps in one field!. The down side though is she is not getting on with other dogs at all, she is barking loads, getting in a real frenzy and I feel would have bitten a big dog the other day had not me and the other owner pulled them apart. It is difficult when other dogs are not on the lead and they come up to her as well. I am not sure how we are going to get over this at the moment especially with our friends lab coming this weekend.
She is not happy when I leave the office and barks again for quite a while, she has pee’d and poo’d but is fine once I go back in, she just can’t get on with being alone.
Last night again we went on an hour run/walk – she really can run and I have to try and keep up!, Clair got home just after us and Candy gave her such a big welcome home and even did a mad terrier run around the house and turned her bed upside down. Clair was really happy with this as she said this was showing that she is really becoming happy at home. She has been sleeping really heavily at night (even heard some dog snoring!) We have not had anymore toilet upsets at home at all which is good but she has done some in both our cars when she has been left.
This morning Clair took her to the vets (we put the muzzle on her) for her booster jab and had to wait outside as she was scaring the other dogs with her barking. They then went down the canal for a walk and again non stop barking with other dogs around – how did she get on with the other dogs in your house????
Food- we carried on with the food you gave us and she was ok, then we tried “Chappie” but she did not like that, Pedigree- liked that, just been and bought the Nature diet Lamb flavour and now she does not like it so will have to swap to a different flavour. Eating the dried food ok and treats when out walking. How much of the Nature diet carton were you giving her with one meal, and how much dried food was added??
She seems very happy with us but just not other dogs or being left alone, she is not too happy when hearing make voices as well oh and discovered that she does not like sneezing!!! As she runs into the other room!
We have finished the fencing this morning so she has her courtyard now, the bespoke hurdle has been made to fit in the trellis gap so that will be picked up soon.
She is very very cute though and has given us some good cuddles, its bath time tonight so we shall see if that gives us our first bite!
Thanks, will keep you updated

| Quote: | Hi Lynne
Just a quick email to let you know that on Sat Candy got on well with the lab that stayed. Today she met another two dogs with a group of my friends and after ten minutes she was fine with all the dogs. We then went into some fields and I took her lead off. She ran round and played with the other four dogs and came back and had a treat so things are going well. The separation anxiety really gets us down so I hope we see some improvement soon. She has probably run about 7 miles today which is great. She ate the nature diet food no problem.
Best wishes
