Billy (Rikki) Jack Russell 16wks Hearing loss Harrow
Rikki was bought nine weeks ago for a daughter to 'help her through a difficulty'. It was a lovely gesture but destined for failure. Rikki has been fully vax'd, chipped and attended training classes. During these classes it was discovered he had a substantial hearing loss which affected his training and will now need gestural training methods. He will also be best with another dog companion.
Rikki is a sweet little pup who is currently highly social and with the right family will come on a treat! He is short legged and smooth haired so his coat will moult. He seems very bright and alert so should naturally compensate for his hearing loss. Apparently he can hear a loud whistle or picks up the vibrations of something making a very loud noise near by. Jack lovers here he is, if you are looking for a second or third dog.

My daughter walked this little one today. A typical cute little puppy just looking to explore and have fun. Tried out his social skills on the lovely Tiger Lily. Started fine with those little puppy licks to the mouth which say I am only young and mean no harm, but got a little too friendly so she told him off. Deaf dogs don't always pick up on social clues so easily so need lots of practice when they are young. This little lad will be geting lots of good interactions to help him learn with Emma's crew.

Yep.
Rikki has landed at The Glade and he is doing very well considering that this is very different than what he was used to!
He has had a harsh lesson learnt already when he tried to kiss a ferret through the wire and then spent a good five minutes telling them in no uncertain terms that he was not happy about them being there and they needed to go as soon as possible!
He is very well behaved with the other dogs and although he cannot hear their growls when they are telling him to back off, he is great at reading their body language and has a good respect for his elders.
He is fine with the cats, good with the small caged animals (interested but not frantic) and is learning the thumbs up signal. This is a command totally made up by yours truely for deaf dogs as we have had quite a few here. If they are chewing anything other than a toy then it is gently taken away from them and as they look at me I give the tumbs up and offer a treat. He is bright as a button though and has started to gran anything possible just so that he can give it up and get a treat, but he is already looking for the thumbs up and a treat so that is great.
He copes well with his disability, his only flaw being that when he does play, he does so noisily being that he cannot hear himself and trying to get his attention when he is full swing is hard, but with the help of broken up Schmackos he will learn quickly enough.
How the previous owners could say that he wasn't 'into them enough' is a mystery. He is incredibly affectionate and lovable and so far is very willing to learn and does so by watching what I am doing and always has an eye on me.

First night and he was a total treasure.
Clean in the house and only two barks to try and demand a bedtime cuddle. Then he went off and curled up with Clive and Kelly in a big heap. He slept right through the night and was up bright and early reminding me that it was breakfast time.
Luckily layins are not an option here!
No destruction yet. He has tried to pick up random pens and an old drinks carton but these were swapped for a treat with a thumbs up and he released in with no trouble. He also nicked a teabag that was dropped on the floor last night in a flash but once again released it and enjoyed a bit of Schmacko for being so good.
Playful yet respectful and totally cute too.
