Bertie Jack Russell 3 yrsWe could run a rescue on just picking up dogs who have been taken in to be put to sleep and we would have wonderful dogs to rehome indeed!
Bertie is perfect good mannered; can be left; neutered, vax'd and chipped. Good with visiting children, dog inside his territory and outside. But on Friday he was playing in a pack and saw a lamb, ran and caught it, bringing it down to its death. The family couldn't forgive him and took him to the vet to be put to sleep. We are delighted to meet him and like other terriers will just need to be kept on an extender to avoid his instincts taking over again.
He met 3 toy dogs out on our walk together and was very pleased to make their acquaintance and walked on. Here he is...we take him in on Wednesday once we find a kennel!

Bertie moved into foster tonight. He is with Moya in Rosehill and mixing with at least 14 dogs! Most of them Lurcher / Greyhounds a few Jack Russels (aren't there always!) a weimarana, beagle plus. Bertie has already had the up close and 'reasonably comfortable' meeting with the cats. Tomorrow he is off to the farm to meet feathered and hooved friends

Oh I didn't realise that you had helped this little lad.
Blame another one on me! I got the call from the vets about two weeks ago and couldn't think of anyone else who would help a dog that had been known to hurt something (even though the circumstances for him were completely wrong )
Its true about the put to sleep comment. I have had above the normal amounts of phone calls and not just from dog pounds, but mostly from private homes who were about to euthanase their own pets for different reasons.

Did his previous owners voluntarily take him to the vet to be PTS, or was it suggested to them that this be done? Either way, I'm glad to hear he's in safe hands now.

They took him straight to the vet..first time he had ever been let off lead and he saw the running lamb and got caught up in the chase. They refused to take him home and see if a rescue place could be found, they felt once he had tasted blood no child was safe ( ignorance of the population nowadays!). He is currently receiving recall training but any terrier faced with a running animal will get involved in the chase irrespective of training. The training is helpful where an aware owner deligently scans the horizon and is alert to the dog's presence of mind and distracts the terrier's mind at that exact moment that it begins to 'engage'. Watch a terrier person with their dog off lead and that terrier person is never off duty and is continually 'checking and commanding their charge'!

What a sad sad story. So glad to hear it has a happy ending.
He sounds like a great all round dog. How could his previous owners have put him in that situation? Did they never notice that if they threw a ball that he chased it? Of course he has a chase instint, he is a dog. It's obvious that off lead training starts in a secure garden, not in a field of lambs. Even a dog who normally has a 100% recall would not be able to listen in that situation.
Well done for seeing the potential in this lad and saving him from being PTS. I hope he will have lots of fun with his new dog savvy family!

BertieBertie is very settled in his new home. He loves both the girls and is great with them. He loves being at the yard and trots around after my son. He's great with the horses and has 6 acres of woodland to run around in and do what terriers do! He's always on the go, loves his (and Jinx's), has an amazing appitite for food and is sociable with everyone.
The pictures don't do him justice and I'm glad we could give him a home. He seem's happy, well he always has a smile on his face...
