Benji - Beagle x Cocker Sp 1 yr St AlbansBenji is a one year old Beagle x Cocker Spaniel who was saved from euthansia just in the nick of time.
Benji has alot of good points about him. He is great with other dogs, cats and small animals (used to play with a rabbit) and very loving to older people.
He does have a few issues which we are going to work on. He is not too keen on children and that is why he was going to be put to sleep after he snapped at the nine year old that he lived with. Benji has got a few possession issues over his toys and these problems have not been sorted before now - the adults of the house just snatched the items off of him which makes this behaviour worse. It gives them a reason to guard (because the item is being taken away). The best way to deal with this is to use food rewards so when they have a toy that they want, offer them a tit-bit and when the dog has dropped the item to reward the good behaviour.
Benji was purchased from a breeder who will not take him back. He was originally the owners sisters dog but handed over to this family because he was too energetic.
Benji lives happily with another dog, three cats and a rabbit.
He has been castrated, microchipped and is now due his booster.
Benji arrives with us on Saturday.

What a beauty. How do these lovely dogs loose their homes I will never understand.
He is a very handsome man and I am sure yet another one that won't be with us long before finding a loving well deserved home.

BenjiEmma asked me to take Benji out today, he was sitting in a kennel happily with 3 other dogs, so no issues there.
I got him out and managed to get the harness on him quite easily, in all honestly I didn't need the harness at all, a lead and collar would have sufficed.
He was brilliant on the walk, no pulling, he was very interested in all the hedges and smells, he wasn't fazed by the horses. He doesn't seem to know 'sit' command, at the halfway point we sat down for a fuss, initially he wasn't too bothered, after a short while though he was sitting on my lap and nuzzling under my arm
He will 'wait' when traffic approaches but you can forget 'sit' at the moment, even treats don't seem to work, but I'll keep trying
Don't tell Frank, but I'm taking the Missus to meet Benji tomorrow

BenjiTook the Wife to meet Benji yesterday, got him out of the kennel with no problems and took him over to the paddock.
Initially he was very keen on the attention we gave him, he does know 'sit' & 'paw' as we found out, using treats and the 'rustling bag' technique.
We tried him out with a frisby to see if he showed the toy possession issues, in fact he was more interested in the other doggie smells than any toy we could produce.
We then took him on a short walk on just a lead, he was keen at first, pulling slightly, but after a short while he was fine, walking alongside us. Once again he was happy to 'wait' on approach of traffic, but 'sit' was ignored even with a treat
My wife was besotted with this beautiful boy, however, RR want to rehome this boy with at least 1 other dog which we don't have at this time. Whoever is lucky enough to have him join their pack will not be disappointed I can assure you......

I'm sure another dog - Frank? - could be found in no time at all. Problem solved - and everybody happy!

BenjiWe took Benji out this afternoon, what a perfect dog. He will walk alongside you no problem at all, no pulling.
He likes to stop for the occassional sniff in the hedgerows but otherwise just a lovely walk in the sunshine.
He will 'wait' for traffic but likes to ignore 'sit', he does know it because he did it for us at the start of the walk when we put his harness on.
Another lovely fussing session at the halfway point as well.

BenjiRR have let me foster Benji with a view to homing if all goes well, we've been on a couple of days out and everything went well so he arrived home today.
So far so good, no issues around food or toys so far, but I won't get too excited just yet as it's early days.
Seems to have settled quickly, understands there are boundries and is sticking to them at the moment, so watch this space!
Just to say thank you to the RR team for the opportunity of taking this boy on board, I know it was a hard decision but with yours and Emma's support I hope it will succeed.

So lovely to see Benji adored and although the right circumstance aren't there currently by Christmas hopefully Benji should be settled in France in a newly refurbished home with a canine friend. Meanwhile he can soak up the love and law: Learning about being a dog with defined boundaries so he can be sure and relaxed by knowing what is accepted and acceptable. Love wins through.

Benji came back to kennels today through no fault of his own, just family circumstance.

BenjiAs Lynne mentioned, through no fault of Benji's we had to return him to kennels, sods law reigned and the day after we took him in a change of circumstance within the family meant we could not give him the attention he needed. Myself and Sue were truly mortified, but there was no other option unfortunately.
In the short time we had him with us, on walks and in the home, he was brilliant, he was obviously house trained prior to rescue, he pawed at the door when he needed to go out, and spent most of the evening lying on his blanket in the lounge within touching distance of someone.
The issues surrounding toy and food possession haven’t come to light at all, although he definitely has a mind of his own and will ignore things if he can, a firm owner will help solve that.
Last week was one of my worst for a long time, and it was compounded by having to return this wonderful little fella. Whoever has the fortune to take him in will not regret it, he is an affectionate, friendly little dog and will give someone years of happiness.

I was very sorry to hear that and it must have been a very difficult decision for you. My thoughts are with you both.

One more of the lovely boy with possibly a couple of girlfriends?! Couldn't you just swim in those eyes?

BenjiI don't know if it's because Benji is away from the main kennels, but it seems that he's been overlooked slightly for walkies.
Baring in mind we took him in and had to return him so quickly, I felt I had let him down somewhat. I thought if I stayed away from him and allowed others to walk him it would be better for him.
However I learned today that the boy is reserved and should be going to a new home soon
As he hadn't been out for a while, I took him as my last walk today. Getting him out of the kennels was fun, but once the harness was on we were off. He is such a well behaved lad when out and about, he is now stopping a sitting on command when traffic approaches, I found the 'rustling bag in the pocket' technique works brilliantly with him, if he thinks he'll get a Smacko treat he'll love you forever
Just before the halfway point Benji encountered a young bullock standing by the fence, he was really suspicious of it and wasn't sure what to do, until it moved, I've never seen a dog jump so far backwards in one move. We continued up the road with Benji looking over his shoulder and then the bullock let out the loudest bellow you've ever heard, I thought I was going to need my pooper scooper bags Poor old Benji he really didn't know what to make of the situation.
The rest of the walk was great, I made a big fuss of him before returning to the kennels, we got back just in time for his crew to go into the paddock, when I left he was running around with Shivas old frisbee in his mouth trying to get one of the other dogs to chase him
I'll miss him dreadfully, but to know he's going to his new home has made my week.

Well done you - you were a very important part of the jigsaw of these rescue dogs lives. Whether we have them for a day or months, that time with someone, no matter how short, to be loved and cared for is so important.
If it was not for everyone who has touched this young man's life he wouldn't be the dog he is, which is as you say lovely.
Good luck Benji
