Amba Hound x 1 yr Gatwick WSussex Kennelled
Her Story: Found Stray as a very young dog, fostered for short durations now kennelled.
Salient points: Good to live with bigger dogs and older children. Young energy: Highly trainable. Needs fair-sized garden or open fields. Sensitive skin to chemicals and certain fabrics.
Advert:Amba is a magnificent cross breed with a vibrant golden red coat. She stands elegant and runs with glee and spirit like the wind. She is just over the year and adapted well in the 3 settings we have known her in though it needs to said she did find living with 8 small dogs challenging! She was then fostered with 2 larger dogs male and female and learned manners, commands and had great fun. Amba loved being up close and comfortable with horses, and is very adaptable . She needs but has never had consistently a good exercise regime with access to a garden and to rebuild the confidence. Amba is spayed, chipped and vax'd
Amba loves to meet people, copes with busy social events and really responds to new situations. She is tiny but her proportions are such in photos she tends to look twice her size. Can't understand why we still have Amba..she is so lovely, fabulous cross breed with 'pharoh hound' looks and a most amazing personality. She can get alittle excited when bored so with 2 long walks a day she settles into an easy delightful and oh so loving dog. Amba has a huge fan club and on meeting you're capitivated!
Please visit this dog's individual thread, in Dogs needing homes in our care on this forum to find out more about them and follow their progress.
If you are interested in re-homing please complete our homing questionnaire so we can ensure our dogs are matched and will suit your circumstances/lifestyle.
"Please note that this dog is currently in kennels and is also available for foster until a 'forever' home is found".
Below is Amba's thread
Amba is a Hound x who was rescued a couple of months back from a dog pound after she was picked up as a stray and never claimed by a member of the public.
The new home she was in had a young child who had to go into hospital due to chest problems (as far as we know not related to Amba or allergies). Amba was taken into foster care, but then the new owner admitted that he could not cope with Amba and did not want her back. Amba is quite high energy level and needs extra training which she never received until she got to us.
The new foster carers did love Amba but because she was strong on the lead they found it very difficult to walk her so over time the walks did tend to stop. Amba was being walked on a harness and she tends to pull like a train on this so a Halti and collar would be a far better idea for her.
The foster carer also had 8 small dogs she ended up being shut away alot in a seperate room and having the smaller dogs so close did drive her slightly nuts! When she finally managed to escape from the room she had a pop at two of the small dogs (although to be fair they DID attack her first!) and the lady felt that she could no longer keep her.
We are working with her social skills with other dogs and she is coming on nicely. She was nose to nose with a couple of Cavaliers the other day and is fine with larger dogs. She prefers males.
Amba came to the kennels about a week ago. Since then she has been spayed, first vaccinated and microchipped. She is also being trained not to jump up so much and we are trying to teach her some self control when it comes to saying hello to new people!
Amba would be better suited to a home with older (teenage) children or an adult household as she is young, exhuberant and young children will get her far too over-excited considering she needs one to one to help her mannerisms.
This is Amba...

Well..as it goes I am thinking that she is more likely to be Ibezan Hound/Pharoah Hound cross She is definately very hound-like when she runs.

amba's settling in periodPicked Amba up on wed, she was an angel in the car slept on the back seat all the way. We dont see any terrier in her she looks very phaorah hound x to us.
Because of the bad weather, which she is finding a little too cold so has been wearing two jackets (what a whimp), we had salt down on the yard which did not impress Amba at all, as her feet were so soft it iritated them. Her feet are rapidly toughening up and she is enjoying being out more as a result.
After one telling off she has learnt the pecking order and is too busy having a brilliant time playing with the other dogs to be bothered that she is at the bottom of the pile.
Working out wot horses are didn't take long, she soon realised they really are not that fun and their poo is much more interesting lol she decided today that the horse lorry is a perfect new hide out her very own palace, which is good, as she is comming with us to her 1st competition this wknd, where she will get to meet lots of horses, dogs and people, and see lots of new things.
She is learning the basic commands but its early days yet and there are distractions apleanty lol she much prefers to get all the toys out of the basket as quick as we can put them back in. One of her favorite tricks is to fall off the sofa onto her back in a pile, not very clever but doesn't seem to bother her.
We love her already she is a real character!
Any questions please ask.

First comp amd learning what life is about!!Hey well as promised here is the update after having a very hectic weekend. We have all been to a competition thats myself and Ellie, (humans) Lordy and Large action (horses) and Dudley Vixen and Amba (Dogs) Great time was had by all. Amba loved being out and about in the lorry was left alone with the other dogs whilst we rode for around 2 and half hours. We then took them all for a walk in the new forest and she was a dream on the lead which was a horse lead rope!!!! travelled back really well.
She is learning how to sit lie down and stay, today we had a lie down with no treats. yipee. She loves being out on the yard now that her pads have hardened up and running around with the other dogs. Horse feed also tastes pretty good. Amba has also found a new passsion in life which is our log fire, she loves curling up in front of it in the evenings on the sheepskin rug.
She is a very cuddly dog likes nothing better than sitting on your lap and just crashing out.
catch up with everyone soon.

Amba came for a jog with me today. Lots of energy - getting the harness on was a bit of a challenge but managed with some help. Interested in everything but especially her reflection in the shop windows! Stood reasonably well while I had a cup of tea but wanted to say hello and put her paws on my lap. Still raring to go after the tea break so we ran a bit further before heading back. Completely scatty but glad to be out. A bit concerned by a huge cone in the underpass but got past bravely.

Poor sweet Amber. She isn't doing well in kennels although she loves Emma and the other girls. She was more subdued than before and has trouble keeping her weight on. We had a nice walk though. She has had some bad experiences but Emma is going to work with her so she can mix happily with a non threatening dog. Will walk her next week as well.

Took Amba out today for a lovely walk. She is down in mood ... and sauntered along like the lioness that she is. Camera malfunction ... pressed the wrong button ... so all the good pictures came out blue ... goes with her mood ... so can't use them but her beauty will shine through. All the chickens ran up to her and she just looked on. "Oh Amba you need your home".
Amba is a cross breed. Not really a Staffie in frame or makeup. She is a lovely cross breed about 17-18" to the shoulder ... and soooo lovely. I promised her, her home would come soon. It will ...

Amba is not enjoying kennel life. She is up and down all the time. Such a sad little girl and although she is eating and drinking fine you can tell that she wants more than we can offer her.
Amba is a strange girl though. She wanders around the paddock like the weight of the world is on her shoulders. Yet in her kennel she is like a jumping bean...it should be the other way round!
We are finding it hard to keep weight on her as you can see from the pics. Far too ribby for my liking! The fact that she is on 2 large meals a day makes no difference to our Amba. She is currently being fed Arden Grange mixed with Butchers. Just the dry depresses her even more so to keep her happy we try and make it so that at least she can enjoy feeding time! Hopefully her potential new family will see her soon.

I took Amba out on a social walk today with Marli and Holly who were walked by Amy and Sarah. She got a bit bored waiting for me to organize everybody so had a chew of her lead. We all got on the road though and she was happy to be out and about. As usual she was a joy to take out - a lovely little girl. She interacted with Marli and Holly no problems. Forgot to get the camera out though so no pictures of the happy walkers.

Amba had a mini Spa-day today. Can't believe how y this girl is and so very sweet. She has been very depressed lately but today had a little play with her lead and thought it was hilarious!! Even Liz commented how much she perked up... Her skin is a little sore at the front so a nice bath with special shampoo should help her. I really hope a home comes up for her real soon!

Saturday: Amba came back to kennels today. She was out for 3 days and had a good time. Lots of lovely walks meeting people and dogs with some off lead time to truely 'let her fur down' . She slept on the bed and was very loving. She got a little over excited when the lead appeared or after a game but she didn't have a garden to wind her energy down in and so the situation was a little intense after her period in kennels. Amba travelled well in the car. quiet and observant; which sums her up most of the time, quiet and observant. She shared the car coming back with a large black lurcher and they were close friends by the end of the journey. You can't help but think whether Amba was raised with a bigger dog.
Amba was delighted to meet Rachel back at the kennels and we are so hoping she wont become depressed again. Emma will give us a report.

amba is an amazing little lady and i have seen her come out of her shell more and more everyday.when i first arrived she had just got back from a foster home and looked really down but since then she seems to be getting a lot better.she has a sweet little trick of putting her paws on top of my shoulders when i go in and crouch down to give her a fuss so she knows i cant get away.she also stayed with me for a couple of nights and she was so sweet she just wanted to be right by me all the time.i dont think this little lady will really care where and who she is with as long as she gets lots and lots and lots and lots of love and attention

It was nice to see Amba again today and walk her. She is coming on a treat and she clearly wanted to play with Eddie out on our walk. She is an affectionate girl now too.
Her ears are truly magnificent! She seemed to sashay a little like a hound today, but whatever her breed lines she is real little sweetie and become quite a cuddle monster. Rachel at the kennels has a very soft spot for her

Amba has gone from being worried about other dogs after her bad experiences to now being a model of good behaviour towards other dogs. She walked out with Buster today and despite him being uneasy at first they settled nicely together. She is a girl of many facets - a calming influence out on the walk, a lead chewing bouncing creature on the way out of kennels and again a different girl in the paddock with her familiar people. But nearly always a loving affectionate girl keen on a cuddle.

Amba walked out with Bobby and Buster today. All three dogs were very nice to each other but Amba's puppy exuberance did mean she wanted to jump on the boys all the time - luckily they didn't mind.
When we had our tea at the cafe she sat on the seat too but nobody seemed to object.

Learnt a lot from Amba today which I hadn't noticed before..her skin is suffering dreadfully in kennels and she was intent on grass rolling to bring comfort to her very sore chest and neck. She taught me that sometimes our dogs just like to be out of the kennel and just lounge about the comfort of company; grass; sunshine; breeze and the stimulation of the world around them is itself 'everything'.
Amba has a very overshot jaw by about an inch. And oh did she enjoy her walk with Marli and oh did she protest about going back to the kennels; we tried persuasion, change of lead, 3 changes of leaders and a toy! She gradually came without having to carry her in ... and she got to keep the toy.
Amba needs her home ... and she is now top of our list alphabetically and in every other way.

AmbaI walked Amba today at lunchtime which was extremely hot, she was excellent in the kennel, slipped her into the harness with no problems. Outside she did start to rag the lead initially, but that soon stopped.
On the walk she was very subdued, she really didn't enjoy the heat at all. We stopped for a water break and fuss, she was very affectionate and the local resident who stopped to speak to us loved her making a big fuss of her. We trotted back to the kennels but she still didn't like the temp at all. I'll try to take her into the paddock on Friday for some 1-2-1.

Amba's skin conditionVery expressive puppy face!
just thinking about the skin condition - does it look red and very dry? my staffie girl suffers from this and while a course of antibiotics reduces it, it doesn't clear up. I have tried various skin treatments (one of which then stank so badly, Madame was hauled off for yet another bath - it had coal tar in it). Vet not sure what has caused it and was loath to go to the next step which was steroids.
However, on the advice of my yard owner, I have been smothering her daily with Calendular ointment on her (Tara's) tummy and this has taken off the red, the swelling and dry skin. Tara now does the massage pose very happily!

Amba does seem to have very sensitive skin for kennel life.
The things that she is allergic to would not affect her in the home. For example, she is allergic to the types of disinfectant that are necessary for kennel work (Trigene). This would not be used in a home so it would not affect her in that way.
Amba also wets in her kennel at night (but is proved to be clean in the home) and so when she wees, if she then gets her bedding dirty she may lay in that before we have a chance to get to her. If she is found to have done this she is immediately washed, but it has caused rashes in the past. This may be the cause of her rash at the moment.
I will tell the girls tomorrow to start her on a couple of weeks baths every three days with Malaseb which will sort the skin problem out very quickly. This shampoo is formulated for skin problems.
We are having extra kennels built within the next two weeks and Amba is on the list to be moved down into the orchard part of the premises so she will be far happier there as there is even more interaction with people and less noise than in the actual kennel block itself. It will be a far less stressful experience for her and she pull her back round again.

Amba was looking fine today - no itchiness just her usual desire to roll in horse dung. She has now learned well to drop to the ground when she doesn't want to go somewhere! Getting her back in her kennel is now a bit of a task. Out on her walk though she appreciated the slightly cooler weather today and was very busy sniffing her way along the lane. Rolled on her back a few times whether grass or road she didn't seem to care. Responsive to no about ragging her lead on the way out but all got too much when she had to wait to get back in. Maybe she would like to play with some rope toys with people, tug or similar. Keen to get to see Chancer who was definitely not so keen on company so we walked alone today.
I think Amba is what you would call an enigma - hard to define and pin down her traits. Let's hope she gets her chance to show the world just who she can be soon.

Amba was so excited to be going out today but as soon as we were out of the kennels she settled down. Amba loves to follow scents - at the cafe today she was tracking a man's footprints. She would probably enjoy some scent based games or tracking. Not something I know much about myself having sighthounds who are mostly a bit lacking in following smells.

Ok, this little minx out-smarted me today! She just wanted to play and play and was full of energy. It was really hard to capture her with the camera. Seems everyone else so far has managed it, but not me! I did take some video of her though playing in the cut grass and hopefully that will come out OK and will follow later. I think Cathy also has some good shots which will also follow too.
Amba is not doing well in kennels and her skin on her chest is being treated for allergy. I also think she has lost weight since I last saw her. She really needs a spell in a foster home with some TLC until that special home finds her.
A frustrasted camera operators attempts at capturing Amba ...

She will need a course of Tavagil. Piriton does not work with her skin. Tavagil is veterinary prescribed. When she very first arrived with us she had to go on a course of this and it bought her health back into line.
The only way of keeping weight on her is to feed a full packet of Naturediet and add a good measure of Arden Grange. Twice a day. Her metabolism is amazing and she can drop weight very quick.

Amber here....Amber's diary.
Here I am in Bournemouth - been almost a week now & still haven't quite knocked my people in to shape. I'm not allowed on the bed or sofa & when I try to play fight, they turn their back & ignore me - how bad mannered is that?
It's been an up and down week. I've been getting loads of walks, but the lead is really cramping my style - except when I managed to trip up a surfer with my extender cord:-) Got tied in knots a few times & told my humans off - they weren't amused - huh! Sand itched in my ears, but love seaweed.
Loads of new smells everywhere & regularly make my humans late for work checking them out on the walk in, they just need to chill a bit. The working day is a bit boring but I get to meet new people, which I love, especially the kids. They try to keep me in a restricted area with toys to keep me amused, but I have learned to jump the gate & frighten them with my antics - great fun! Anyway, I can't be too bad, 'cos they always take me home & feed me.
Today was a real treat. Me and my friend, Blue the black labrador, took our humans to the New Forest for a run. At last no lead - just miles of heather, streams , ponds, mud, horse poo to roll in & the odd cow. What fun we had. Back to Blue's house for supper & a few hours play fighting - he's much better at it than my humans - although I think even he was getting fed up towards the end.
Home now, but exhilirated by my day. Not ready to sleep - been really good at night so far, but it's probably time to give Kirsty & Rod a taste of my best singing voice.
It's good to be back on line.
Yours tunefully.

Hi again
My folks took me to the New Forest again today, but no Blue as he had to go to work. Missed him, but found lots of other things to do. Rod was really good at throwing his ball on a rope & pretty good at retrieving it too. I'm better with sticks (I let Rod play with my sticks too sometimes) and horse poo - lots of lovely horse poo - starting to smell really good here:-)
Kirsty & Rod are starting to shape up ok & I like to keep them amused by sitting and coming on command....they're so easily pleased sometimes. My favourite is when Kirsty calls me from far away & I can thunder towards her at high speed - she loves that one.
I still like to remind them of their place occasionally, but they're really not very good at that game, so think I may have to try something else.
I'm back in the garden with Rod now & he's playing a strange guitar thing with strings in the wrong places - but it sounds not bad - nice to relax to.
Back to work tomorrow though. Not nearly as much fun as there's no poo & I get terrible paw spin on the laminate floors - lets just hope some interesting people come in to amuse me, or else I'll need to let myself out again to circulate amongst my public.
Anyway, must go and amuse my humans again....they need so much exercise!
Bye for now.
A x
ps. Can anyone tell me how to put some photos on my thread? - my people say something about the endings being wrong on the files.

Think I'm finally getting somewhere with my new humans. My male human, Rod, suffers from "sit" complex, he randomly says this word but I think I've finally trained him - I find that if I just put my rear end on the ground he'll stop this immediately! Yesterday, we were just about to cross a busy road, I sensed he was revving up for another "sit" fit - I just put my bottom down and he didn't even start! He just did a "good girl" - much more sociable behaviour! However, he's a little nervous in the middle of crossing the road, he goes too fast so I simply slow him down mid way by pretending there's an interesting smell.
I feel encouraged but I know there's a long way to go with their training.

Sadly Amba is on the move. Kirstie and Rod have given her a well earned holiday away from kennels but need to return her on Friday. She has proved herself in everyway but has 'excited' episodes when she begins to want to play tug of war with the lead or clothing. Sometimes is to easy to distract her before it manifests, other times it can be curtailed soon on: But on occassions she gets caught up in it with growling and needs very firm kind handling to get her to calm down and shake herself out of it. Kirstie and Rod circumstance are such she needs to cope with being in a shop during the day so difficult to work through this.
So lets be positive and lets see what comes up for Amba as considering her length of stay in kennels she has proved herself a star!

Magic..in the air. Amba was put up on the website this afternoon and immediately attracted Simon and Suzie who had homed a dog from us 4 yrs ago and sadly have since lost. Simon and Suzie are going to meet Amba with a full handover by Kirstie and Rod..with the view of bringing her home, settling her in and if all works out offering her, her forever home. paws crossed

Amba is back with Alyson. Not really sure what went wrong only that within a few hours of Amba being in her foster home she took a precious ornament and when asked to leave it she snapped with her teeth. Caught the arm but no puncture -completely out of character. Amba has never reacted like this before. Talked it through with Emma and can only think that being new in a house she got excited and if she had been distracted she would have given up the item.
Amba will be my next foster I really wanted to bring her here tonight but I am only allowed 6 dogs in my house

I was down that way so just had to visit Amba. She is looking well and keeping everybody on their toes
She initially ragged the lead / harness but quickly settled, only to try again a few minutes later. She was just so excited, after that though she was a joy to walk and we had a lovely walk along a footpath and she enjoyed the smells of the countryside. I just love this girl and hope she finds that special home soon.

Amba has been calling me for the past 3 days..so I jumped in the car today to see what it was all about...she was delighted to see me as though it was a surprize..I said but you've been disturbing my sleep calling me calling me. She wanted to run she said...OK I said lets run..she ran around the grass then through the wood stopping to see, stopping to smell in Amba alert fashion. Then...
Schhhh lie down a dog is approaching
Hello to Benji..and Benji's mum..quick pose... then lets play.
We let her off lead and off they went just enjoying the autumn day then she disappeared and came charging back to meet..a smell of what Benji was into then off she went again in a different direction and charging back..huh you haven't walked far.
Amba is such a great friend now. Her spell in Bournemouth matured her and she is much more settled. She is leaving that 'puppy' energy at last and I can't capture her exquisit looks. The most beautiful dog you could find with grace and mischief ways!
(I need to go and see Shiva as well she is summoning me too!)

I had the pleasure of Amba's company for lunch today. She started out a little bit of a menace but this time settled very quickly and we had a lovely walk. She stopped several times for cuddles. She sat beautifully and watched while I paid for my sandwich. As she was my last walk I was very pleased to have such an easy pleasant walk. Amba is such a lovely girl and has matured so well.

Walked this beautiful girl today and as always a pleasure, particularly once she is over her little bits of mischief. Sometimes she really seems to have an intense interaction - she is the kind of dog who would always be there for you once you have got to know her.Yet she can also be a happy go lucky fun seeker She gives 100% and needs someone to give her 100% back.

Very excited initially, but enjoyed her walk with one of Bud's parents (I can't remember who ) and settled quickly.

Karl walked the lovely Amba and I was very jealous...I was walking behind them with Miss Dior and watched as Amba just sat down on the cinder the track...ha! let’s see what you do now...Karl turned looked at her said something pulled her for a few steps and then that’s when she did it..........she looked up at him with those eyes, flashed those lashes and walked next him the whole way, looking up every now and then....last I saw was the 2 of them walking into the distance....when they got back I asked Karl how she was...he said she reminded him of the character out of star wars “jajabinks” with the big floppy ears...she was perfect to walk, best dog he had ever walked. He said she stayed at his side the whole way, no pulling, an absolute delight to walk...when we were going home I asked which dog he would want to take home..he had 2 and Amba was the first....I think she made a HUGE impression...

Little Amba wasn't particularly interested in having a walk today, but was just happy to potter along (after the initial couple of frantic minutes) and have a cuddle. (So we sat in the middle of the cinder path, the pair of us, whispering sweet nothings in each others ears )
