ADOBE FLASH PLAYER

When surfing through this site I get a message appear at the top of the computer screen "This site wants to install Adobe Flash Player Installer" and that if I trust this site to click here.

Although I trust Rescue remedies as a site, I don't want Adobe Flash Player Installer on my computer, mainly because it's my husband's desktop I'm sitting at right now, and I'm fed up with constantly receiving these messages! : Mad  Evil or Very Mad

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can STOP these messages constantly coming into view, without installing I don't know what onto my husband's computer? This really is spoiling my enjoyment of this website, so Ii would be grateful for any replies.

An explanation. You can skip this if you're not interested. Wink
The request you are receiving is coming via myfastforum.org ie the hosting mechanism of this forum rather than this forum per se so RR has no way of preventing that request. Flash is used to display animations - amongst other things and the adverts on myfastforum use Flash plugins to work. It's possible that paying for the hosting would stop that because the adverts would be removed but it’s also possible that the forum shell is using Flash in some way so paying to go advert free would make no difference. Free forums pay for themselves via advertising. But frankly, I’m sure all of us would prefer the money went to helping the dogs and we'll put up with the adverts for their sake! I have to admit that I like some of them! Many websites you come across when browsing will be using Flash - it's a pretty common mechanism for using animations and some graphics - for example a lot of on-line games require Flash and a lot of adverts operate via Flash and because of that the browsers are loathe to give us an on/off switch for Flash – it would reduce the chances of revenue from advertising.

Some questions for you...
Which browser are you using?
Is the request coming via a pop-up or on the menu bar at the top?

Some suggestions
If it is via a bar at the top then when you get the request to install the plugin click on NO and that ought to fix it for the session. It will issue the same request next time you return to the site. Sometimes it will continue to request when you shift from parts of the forum.

If it is via a pop-up then simply block the pop-up for THIS site. This may or may not work. Some blockers don't seem to be 'strong' enough - Flash is pretty insistent! From its point of view it reaches a webpage that needs Flash to run so it asks you again if you want to install it! You can use the inbuilt blocker on Firefox or IE *and* the blocker that comes with the Virus protection - most have blockers these days.

The alternative is to use another browser for your browsing - so if your husband is using IE you could use Firefox and you could ask him if you could install Flash on 'your' browser...  Very Happy

Adobe is trustworthy and the software is stable - it won't do any harm. The issues with Flash are not so much at the user end (although there are some) but at the developer end. However, I understand your position perfectly - it isn't your computer and installing something on it isn't down to you. If your husband is like me he will have protected the admin side in any case and you won't be able to do it!

I have seen ways of preventing Adobe from ever asking to install again but they're trickier and mean messing around in registry or creating a little program that runs to prevent Flash from pestering you. I would NOT suggest doing that at all. It's safer to either ignore the requests or install Flash on a separate browser. If your husband is using IE then Firefox, Chrome or Safari are nice browsers. Firefox is my personal favourite.

I don't know if anyone else has anything to suggest... Unfortunately, I have Flash installed on all FOUR browsers I use and I'm racking my brains trying to think of another browser I could install to test any theories...

I have mailed Adobe to ask if they know how to fix this but I'd be surprised if they are eager to address it. If that fails I'll ask the university technicians because it's an interesting question. They know the answer to everything and actually software should not force itself upon you - that isn't user friendly at all.

BTW if you're sharing a computer all the time then your husband could make an account for you on his computer and either install all of these things for you or better still give you admin rights over your own bit so that they wouldn't interfere with 'his' part at all and you can do it for yourself... that might be another way forward.

I apologise for not offering a 100% certain easy fix. Let's hope someone else has some better ideas!

I take back everything I said about this not being an issue high on Adobe's priority to resolve. It was. Unfortunately, I'm either communicating with a bot or with someone with poor command of English.  Here is the reply I got... Given the spelling errors my guess this is a human trying to write English and not exactly succeeding... Nice try though and I'm really touched that they did attempt to address the problem. I thought they'd ignore it!!!

I'll have a word with a technician...
