Posted: Tue Dec 09, 2008 6:58 pm Post subject: Benson Patterdale x Staffie DOB 06 Byfleet Surrey
Homing requirements: Knows basic training commands. Secure fair sized garden. Shares well with another dog he trusts. Grew up in young family. We are looking for a home with older children or an adult home. Ideally to live with another dog.
His Story: Lost his first home as he was being tormented by a toddler. Benson was homed by his fostering family to live with another dog and with 2 children. He was frightened by the 7yr old boy and bit in fear which is an echo of his 1st home.
Advert: Benson is 4 years old. A young terrier with brindle flecks throughout his coat showing the Staffie sweetness in there too. Benson is friendly to people and dogs ... such a sociable dog. Benson is housetrained and has basic commands. Benson enjoys living with another dog. He adores life, family and fun. Neutered, vax'd and chipped. Currently in Byfleet, Surrey.
Benson lived in with a busy young family; was fostered with 5 terriers, and was homed with children and another dog! They are happy to retain him until his home is found. He loves his walks and has a nice balance of wanting to meet dogs, but can be called away easily as his real connection with you. He is fun to walk and his dog skills were good but needs his confidence rebuilding. Benson is a sweetheart ... whose home must surely be just around the corner.

Benson and Ricky Benson is slightly taller than a Border Terrier
Benson started his day very nervous. I gave him a nice walk and he began to unwind. All the folks in the vets are great so it wasn't the ordeal he was expecting. However as you can see Benson is depressed and confused... He has been abandoned in his mind.
Think of him tonight as he lies in his solitary kennel with his heat lamp on. Oh I wish I could save him from this. Is he a Staffie?...he is a terrier with possibly 50% Staffie in there but as a consequent his prospects of finding his home this side of Christmas are slim. He is very trusting and responds to love. Oh I wish our population could lose their predijudical fear of Staffies and Staffie crossed. Love them. Love him. _________________ You can't train the terrier out of a terrier..they are their own persons!
I met Benson today and he is an extremely sweet natured boy. He is a very cheeky little fella, but greeted me with a wagging tail first thing this morning.
He is far too skinny for my liking so has been put onto Naturediet to bulk him up a bit. He loves this food and will probably stay on it for his stay at our place.
This afternoon he will be dog tested and I will update after work.

Benson is not terrible with other dogs but would suit a bitch that will put him in his place. He is a very 'in-your-face' dog and certainly struts his stuff! He seems to be quite a dominant dog and although he has shown no aggression towards other dogs!

Little Benson is coming on in leaps and bounds (literally!) He is such a little character and flies out into the paddock every time he is let out like he has never seen it before!
He is an inquisitive little soul and is into every little smell that is around. His recall is excellent though and he will come to his name even if he is in a different exercise area and out of sight. He is desperate to please and very quickly picks up commands.
He is wasted in kennels. He deserves one to one and a loving home.

Oh yes Benson moved today..he wondered why he had been summoned into the court of thoughtful ladies, so he tried to charm, which actually meant running around in circles and leaps to say hello. So what is the pow whow! all about actually a pow whow! is similar to a bow whow! but has the big chiefs in on it.
The meeting was about selecting Benson to go and meet all the folks in Gatwick kennels and charm them with his many talents..so in glee he lept into the passenger seat and directed me through the blossom filled country lanes. Oh yes then a lovely walk through the woods to settle and give him a sense of belonging..before he went into a new kennel with a new many voiced choir _________________ You can't train the terrier out of a terrier..they are their own persons!
walked benson today. He was initially very excited and grabbing at the lead, but quickly stopped. Nice boy to walk, and confident and happy to be handled. He keeps coming back and touching your hands, and needs to learn that he can't take treats until he's offered, and needs to be sitting tidily, but he was getting the hang of this very quickly. Very good around the chickens, easy to get in and out of the kennels and happy to sit, say hello to Pooch and share any treats going.
I like this little lad very much. we spent a few minutes working on not pulling, and then I spent several minutes falling over him because he wouldn't move away from my feet!
I suspct he's got a few rough edges, but nothing that isn't sortable. He's quick to learn and quite confident.
Obviously having his bits off is starting to work. although Benson is still quite confident he mixed nicely with Pooch, Jake and Mac with no problems at all. He does initally have high energy levels, but I find him an absolute delight. Quick to learn, food orientated and good to handle. He is inclined to jump and will grab sleeves but if told not to in a forthright manner he stops immediately , and doesn't seem worried by it.
If I was looking for a medium height non-collie agility dog I would seriously consider him, he shows focus, enthusiasm and is desperate for some 1-1 interaction so deeply trainable, and is quick to learn.
He recalls (on the flexi) really well, though I call him "Benny" as he reminds me of "Benny The Ball" from Top Cat. Its the round face and big trusting eyes I think, and also that he never stops bouncing!
He also passed his chicken and horse test with flying colours!
I met Benson last weekend and we had a very enjoyable walk in the woods together. He is a lovely boy! Very responsive and well natured. Elaine thinks he has the potential to make a good agility dog as he is so focused. I have asked Agilitynet to put him up on their site. Here are his latest photos ... so cute ...
I am so happy to report that Benson is here lying at my feet as I type this 'report' and it will be a glowing report. Having the fortune of finding Ben's delightful and rightful owners..the search was who will be the foster buddy for my pack. So many in kennelled dogs desperate for the chance. My thoughts kept going to Benson..5 months in kennels and how well he has borne his sentence. So off to his kennels and I walked every dog BUT!..he knows me and oh could he get my attention!! Then suddenly I delighted in opening his door knowing unless things went horribly wrong Benson wouldn't need the kind services of Alison's hotel.
He was very excited on his walk and very excited in the car..more than he had been last time we travelled together I recalled. A brief stop to let the dogs in my house out and feed them whilst he waited in the car then off to the vet for a check over and 1st vax which I was aware just hadn't happened since neutering.
Then back we came and to the pub. He met my hubby really well, adored the adventure through the fields and over the bridge to the pub. He met people really well and you could see his disbelief at all the events. Back home we introduced him to 2 trusted dogs ..not a flicker just gleeful excitement and friendliness. Then Toby and oh see them play. Minxie ..no reaction because of Minxie's size, dogs can react to her as though she is a cat..then Glenn the test... Glenn accepted him straight away. Benson is in the pack as if he has always been here. What a wonderful dog. Easy peasy terrier...confirmed. Ahhh look he is laid out it's been a busy day!

Benson is doing brilliantly. He has gelled with the pack. Light hearted in attitude; can't get enough good boys..he just stares into my eyes saying "are you really talking to me!" He is quite mouth orientated but very soft, and I am encouraging licks, rather than mouth contact. Just loves to be near, currently licking his paws with back legs stretched out as I type. Such a cherub!
