Always be prepared in case the cat scratches the dogs eyes out! Not all cats are dog friendly!
I have kept the cat in a wire crate and let the dog walk passed then I seperate again. Then I try again for a longer period on time and build up until each party is not intent on harming the other.
Then I let them roam with me in between. Once they have touched noses and sniffed bums - you know you are on a winner! |

With Blue I kept him on a lead and let Dave investgate, a few exchanges of hisses proceeded and then all was good, told blue no a few times and pulled him back to heel but it worked after just a few hours, with Jess we just watched she had a sniff of Dave and walked away, but bearing in mind Dave thinks he is a staffy anyway!! and now we live in nearly complete harmony with Blue, Jess, Dave and Fluffy. _________________ The more people I meet the more I love my animals !!! |

keep dog on lead and let cat run about, with a water pistol near by for dog confisant/bad tempered cats. i wouldnt recommend holding the cat as they really dont take kindly to it. ( scratches to prove lol)
another way to do it is keep the cat in a cage and let dog investigate if very excitable to get the mad 5 minutes over with. lol. but make sure the cat always has an escape route.

Should explain here that Freddy is named after Freddy Kruger and not nearly as cuddly as his name suggests . would also add that just because the dog is non reactive when the cat is still, this may change when the cat moves. on a slightly different note, you may need to move the cat litter tray just in case someone fancies a snack
Can be done though, Freddy hated all dogs with a vengeance, and was quite prepared to take war to the enemy, and he has now learned to tolerate them. |

Owner aware and alert ready to use voice very strongly
Dog on a short lead and muzzle if the dog has got used to the muzzle 'muzzle tolerant'
Escape routes for cat
Wire crate rather than covered carrier. Latter can create a barrier; put the cat on edge; add mystic; sinister muffled sounds. The cat can't use their body language only to attack the crate. Dog can't see it properly only smell and hear which are his 2 most vital senses but loss of vision can add concern.
Practise Muzzle, short lead controlled and especially voice to call back; call back; call back so the cat feels you're in control and they are safe and dog does also.
Calm settled atmosphere
Smell Allow dog to smell cat's area; bed/ resting place..accepting it into the pack environment
Ideal is all in lounge cat enters. Dog on short lead and no tension given but you begin to talk to the dog to distract their attention from the cat and call away on sighting. OR dog in garden cat comes into garden. Activity attracted away from cats area so cat can feel safe and sit and watch in a safe position..dog sees cat is called away treat given _________________ You can't train the terrier out of a terrier!

When we had Pepper from you at about five months of age, Polly thought things might be a bit sticky in the 'dog meets cat' department, but with the aid of a dog crate we sorted it. Put cat in crate, in front room, all sit and watch tv and ignore the cat and dog - cat hissing - dog pacing round crate until dog gets bored and comes to sit with us and cat settles down for a nap. Following night put dog in crate and shut cat into room with us while we all watch tv again. Couple days of alternating and then let all the animals get a little hungry. Call pets and dish out grub. All too busy concentrating on their dishes to bother with each other. lol. Sorted! Now cat and dog are mates. Even sometimes get into bed together! lol.
