Referral letter

I am one of the dog wardens from Xxxxx Borough Council and I have a Crossbreed in our kennels at the moment that I am desperately trying to find a home for, please see details below:

Rumpole is a young male Gt Dane X bullbreed. He is mainly white with some black markings. An adorable boy, very sweet natured and friendly. I picked him up as a stray from an address on Christmas Eve. He was suffering from weepy eyes but did not look inflamed or sore at that point. Kennel staff monitored him over the Christmas period and on Tues 5th Jan - his eyes were significantly worse, both were weeping quite badly and looked much more inflamed. I also noticed 2 firm swellings close to his testicles that were also concerning. A vet appt was made for him on Tues 5th Jan. Vet gave him a full check over and found that he had developed corneal ulcers on both eyes and was suffering from impacted anal glands. Glands were expressed and treated and eye drops were prescribed.

A follow up appt was made for him on 08.1.10 - vet confirmed left eye ulcer cleared up and right has very nearly cleared up HOWEVER he will need surgery! The ulcers are being caused by an entropion of the lower lids on both eyes. These need correcting but there is no guarentee that 1 operation will be enough, he may need more. He is also suffering from patches of pink skin especially around his feet which may indicate an underlying skin allergy. Surgery would apparently cost between £300-£400 per eye at our vets, although they are trying to arrange a reduced fee for us. The vet suspects this eye problem is a birth defect so the poor little boy has been suffering for quite some time!

He is such a sweet and lovely boy despite, no doubt, being in a lot of pain and discomfort for quite some time. As a local authority, we just do not have the funds available to help him and I so desperately would like to give him a chance!

Please let me know if you think you may be able to help, as unfortunately, pts will be our only other option.

Tried to get financial support for the operation but wasn't forth coming...so the 2 dog wardens are donating personally towards some of his care bless. Rumpole came to us today, here he is in the vets with his new collar on. He had both eyes operated on, was neutered and chipped. He has gone into Gatwick (N) to receive after care.

If I didn't have reason enough to pop into Gatwick N this week, then to visit this boy is a must Very Happy

Poor boy.  He just had to know what pain free living is like.  Hopefully his op will give him that.

Rumpole is a lot smaller than I expected Very Happy  More boxer size than great dane.  He was still wearing his buster collar but didn't seem to mind on the walk at all. He is a lovely boy and didn't quite know what to do on the walk - kept walking a bit then circling back behind me. eventually though he worked out I was staying with him and walked quite normally.

His eyes still look  a bit sore but he will soon have sore eyes as a distant memeory and a new pain free life ahead  Very Happy

Oh we are pleased with Mr Rumpole. He travelled beautifully in the passenger seat of my car for an hour's journey to the vets. He was put under to remove his stitches but all beautifully healed and his eyes have settled well..a little more time needed to see a full recovery but he is looking handsome..very handsome.

Going to walk him tomorrow to get some lovely pictures

I walked Rumpole today and he is such a cheery chap Very Happy
Coming in and out of kennels he was keen and pulled but settled ok walking. He wanted to say hello to Patch but Patch wasn't quite so sure what to make of him.  He is like a great big puppy full of enthusiasm for life and it must be so nice for him to be free of eye pain now. Someone could have a lot of fun with this boy Very Happy

Met Rumpole for the first time today - he certainly wiggles when he wags!  His eyes don't seem to be troubling him at all & we had a lovely walk.

Unfortunately photography is not my skill - the lead is in focus I suppose!

Wonderful focus on Rumpole today  I gulped as I entered his kennel and he danced a gig as I mastered his harness preparation. Outside the kennel block and he is still dancing a gig. Video is a must he'll have you in stitches, when you see him in stitches, as the lead gets twisted and suddenly he is on his back trying to work out what happened..what happened I bent down to redo my shoelace. The image came of a dog in pieces back legs moving this way; front half that way ..I looked long and hard has he only got 4 legs! BUT he settled and I got some better pictures in his serious moments. When he was having a laugh; no way!

We jumped in the car and sped down to the co-op..."triple BTL sandies for me..I'll wait in the car". Wait he did, as I got out he made no attempt to follow and when I got in his eyes brightened as nose messages got through. "Bacon yummy, heres my paw, I know how to be a good boy and really concentrate".

Back into the wood and we had a wonderful settled walk..he really found peace in our liaison together. Yes a large puppy he is but he will be easy to train and will settle into a fabtastic dog! Heart swell

Here is Rumpole coming back and checking where I am..just need to test his 'in the field' social skills 'cause everything says a fab. off the lead dog.

Took Rumpole for a walk yesterday - my first day as a new walker. He was no problrem once he got over the initial excitment of being outside. I had to get others to do the harness though - he's such a wriggler!

Rumpole showed a new walker round the footpaths today. He was his usual bouncy exhuberant self - he always has a smile on his face - just one of those cheerful characters  Very Happy

Rumpole had a double walk today. He was very hyper getting him out of the kennel so we decided to walk him alone so he calmed. 5 mins into the walk he was chilled. He had a good walk and then as I wanted his visitor to see him with dogs, I went to get Amba who has become a regular walking companion with Rumpee.  When I got back Rumpole was in deep conversation with a terrier x who had run up to meet. We walked a long walk and along a busy road to see Rumpole's reaction to traffic. He was a little jumpety but on the whole settled. Amba told him off when he intruded when she was having tete to tete with a lady. Just a grumble and he did his blink of amazement, as he stepped back, then smiled and decided bitches well they do need to be respected.

Rumpole has won one heart and probably won another but meeting this weekend will determine that, with aim for the following weekend 'homing'. So Rumpole hang on in there a home of your own might not be in too distant future!
