Hi there

One of my poems got published - my first time in print - in the Costa Calida Chronicle, National Poetry Day Competition in Spain!  All the entries had to be about "work".  If I am lucky enough to win a prize, I want to donate it to Noah's ARC (the sick and injured dog rescue in Spain) for their Christmas Raffle.  Unless it turns out to be a laptop (doubtful) in which case I need it for my work with Noah's ARC and Rescue Remedies!

If, you think my entry is worthy of a vote - you can vote for me by e-mailing costacalidachronicle@yahoo.es and say that your vote for the National Poetry Day competition is for "Work for your Life! - Sharonr' Tribute to Noah's ARC".  To make it fair the other entries can also be seen on the links below and my poem follows:

There were two other entries in the October edition on page 70 :

My entry page 46 in the November edition , followed by two further entries on the next page:

Work for your Life!

This is a story about some of my dear friends
They were born to do no less than fetch, race and defend
It was deep within their make-up and genes so they were told
Written over and over in the history books of old.

The price of a meal and their keep they had to earn
There was a very high price to pay if they didn’t learn
They had no choice, they had no say
They were born to work, they were born to obey.

When Jake’s eyes came into focus, on that very first day
He saw his master standing over him, and heard him say
“You’re a pointer-retriever, and you’ll fetch the kill
You’ll do as I say, and you’ll act on my will”!

But when the guns went off, Jake was overcome with fear
Was it truly his fault if he couldn’t live up to his peers?
His body shook and trembled, and he under-achieved
He was frozen to the spot, he just couldn’t retrieve.

And then there was Willow, in and out of a trap
Waiting for bets to be placed, and a gun to be cracked
Her life was at stake, every time she chased that hare
She’s was a winner for a short time, on a wing and a prayer.

She ran for her life, until she had no breath left
Because every race for her, could have led to her death
The glory days are over, her winning streak has flown
Her career in the racing world, has fallen like a stone.

And lastly, there was Samson, he was ‘just’ a “black and tan”
They told him he was a guard dog, and chained him to a can
He knew what his job was, he was meant to defend
Samson braced himself for trouble, ready to fight to the bitter end.

But what they didn’t tell him, was that he was wasting his time
They didn’t know he even existed, they didn’t care a dime
Waiting in the blazing heat, for something that never came
Samson really wasn’t a fighting dog, in fact he was very tame.

And what’s happened to them all now, I can hear you say
Well their masters gave them a choice, at the end of the day
“Take a bullet from a gun, or run for your lives”!
Not a difficult decision, if one has the will to survive.

All have found themselves a saviour, a brief place to rest their heads
They’ve been given sanctuary, a meal and some clean beds
It’s been a hard and painful journey, but now it’s almost at an end
They know there’s someone out there, that just wants to be a friend

So if these stanzas have moved you, or even touched your heart
Please come to their rescue and give a dog a loving start
They all deserve a “forever” home and a better fate
If you think you can help them then dial 699 352 818!
