Posted: Tue Jan 05, 2010 11:20 pm Post subject: Patch (Welsh Prince) Greyhound 05.10.05 Horsham
His Story: Patch is an ex-racer with 33 races on his record with 5 firsts to declare. He gained his retirement in Oct through a cruelty case filed against his owner because of the poor conditions he and his friends were kept in.
Salient points: Smart male greyhound. Has enjoyed foster and adapted very well to family life, developing good skills considering kennelled background will need to build further. Good with dogs and people but not for cats or small furries. Maybe sometime before he proves his trust off lead outside.
Advert: Now's your chance has come to own 'the Prince of Wales' known as Patch to his friends! Called Welsh Prince, this Prince from Wales did his racing at Reading. He is an elegant "grey" born 05 October 05. He has enjoyed a short foster when he was neutered and vax'd whilst awaiting a rescue place. He was a winner of 5 races and he'll be a winner again. He proved himself very adaptable living with a female grey; and showed himself to be calm, steady and friendly boy.
Patch is captivating to behold, a graceful in his movement. The day after he arrived the kennel owner called us to share her pure delight at seeing Patch running in the snow and having a 'ball'. His family will admire and guide him through into retirement which keeps a smile on his face and puts a sparkle in his eyes.

The background to Swansea race track closure releasing Patch from all obligation!

Swansea dog track closes
Posted 13 November 2009
Swansea dog track in South Wales has closed less than two weeks after the owner was fined under the Animal Welfare Act for keeping greyhounds in poor conditions. Inspectors found dogs kept on soiled bedding, kennels smelling of urine, and one dog with an open wound on his tail that had been left untreated.
The closure of the track is an important victory for the campaign against dog racing, but has left many greyhounds in need of homes after being discarded by owners who only wanted them for use in racing.

We walked Patch today and he is a gorgeous boy. Very excited to be having a walk but very well behaved and easy to walk. He has limited dog experience but showed no signs of aggression as he passed the other kennelled dogs. Lovely soft fur so common in the whiter greyhounds, like puppy fur on his head. Very cute patch over one eye. Loves his runs in the paddock.

Until we get to know him a bit bettter here is Patch's description from his previous foster home:
'Patch is a handsome boy in superb condition. Patch is a confident boy who isn't fazed by noises such as thunder, loud heavy traffic or gunshot etc. Patch could live on his own quite happily as the only dog because he doesn't need to lean on another dog for confidence.
Introductions to small dogs to be done cautiously only because he will retaliate if a small dog comes snapping round his face or legs but otherwise he's ok with them as long as they don't invade his space rudely.
Patch loves his cuddles and responds well to direction, Patch would make a superb pet for a single male household only because he seems to respond better with men than women. He's super with children but he would knock the small ones over if they get in his way i.e. someone knocking on the door, Patch likes to see who it is before everyone else and may knock a small child flying if in his way.
Patch is a funny boy, although he has a lovely comfy duvet to lie on he prefers to lie on the cool kitchen floor away from his bed even with the back door open whatever the weather. He's happy to wear his indoor coat though at night for this reason. Patch is clean in the house and has been let off the lead for short periods in an enclosed field and will come hurtling back to recall for the husband but not for the wife. He's not cat friendly though and can be easily distracted by squirells etc. when in the field, where his recall goes out of the window. Patch can be a little strong on the lead to start off with but soon settles and again better with the husband than the wife.
Patch will take his time and may leave his food but his weight is superb so no ill effects to this behavour. Patch loves his toys and quite happily plays on his own with them or with his foster carer.'
I found he was quite easy on the lead but he may still be settling _________________ www.furryfriendsrescue.co.uk
Patch was easy to walk again today He is still wearing his coat to keep him warm at the moment. Greyhounds have very little body fat and really can feel the cold more than other dogs.
He walked nicely past the other dogs in kennels and was calm passing a spaniel at a reasonable distance. He didn't react either when I walked other dogs past him.
I walked Patch today and he was a delight, he was in a very playful mode today and wanted to play with Zeb, he was easy to walk and enjoyed a cuddle and a rub when I took him back to his kennel. Look forward to seeing him next week x
Patch is really showing his character now Loves to play ball with the kennel staff and is also very ticklish He was very pleased to have a walk and briefly bounced like a kangaroo before settling into his sedate walking style. He is such a lovely boy and would make an excellent first greyhound either on his own or with a girlfriend or two. A couple of walks a day and a run in the garden is all he needs for exercise. He seems to already relate well to other dogs as well which is a bonus. He has been in a foster home so also has a good idea about home life. So much going for this boy - I do hope his new owners find him soon

Patch had a wonderful walk and run in the spring sun today
Our Welsh Prince is very ROYAL; easy to walk but brakes on when he bursts into flight he will whistle down the wind...

Patch was delighted to welcome me through his front door today with his collar and lead in hand. He 'jumps for joy' and then gleefully showed me the way out and was greeted by "oh whow oooos" as he was met by 2 greyhound fans who nearly took him home to join their 2 lurchers! Off we sped on our walk.
Greyhounds are just so easy to walk beside as they smell, then look, then smell and they are on a scent..then they stand again to gaze into the distance. Your eyes follow as you know they are tuned into some distant bird or just waiting for some hint of movement. Patch is so graceful and his character is divine.
Always wanted to help a retired racer..we have helped 3 Greys in the past two were homed as pups; the other was a retired racer but coming out of its home. Having had so many lurchers through my home at last the magnificant...here before me a Welsh Prince to behold!
Its been a long road to find your home Patch; are we nearly there?
