Posted: Tue Sep 01, 2009 5:12 pm Post subject: Monty Staffie DOB 04-05 Richmond Surrey Fostered
Homing Requirements: Monty came in with a severe ear problem. He has since has radical ear surgery and his ear is now much improved but carries a cauliflower ear. Monty will not get insurance for his ear but then little can go wrong now. Monty so loves his walks but can get frightened initially with other dogs but will get used to them with handler reassurance. Monty is desperate to trust and once friends; friends for life. He doesn't go back of challenged but needs low dog density. Great people dog and will be delightful with children he is so gentle. He is a little mouthy but in a 'can't get close enough to you' Staffie way little nibbles and lots of licks. Can be left and vehemently housetrained. Concerned travelling in a car!
His Story: Monty arrived in a Welsh pound chilled and joyous..had no idea what a dangerous place he was in. Hey look, he came out the other side! Monty is neutered, chipped and vax'd.
Advert Monty's a Staffie lovers dream. Monty is such a great character; probably only 5-6 years old so lots of life ahead of him. He has gone through the wars with his terrible ear on arrival and his skin broke down with stress of kennels. Monty has had a ear operated on; healed well. He will probably always have a cauliflower ear which is just a thickening of his ear from years of shaking his head and trying to get at his irritation. He is neutered and had a full dental.
Monty is a people dog and nothing is going to stop Monty finding his home and find it we will! In fact can't wait to meet his new owners and just know they will be as great as he is and equally as lucky. Monty who loves his walks. Everything about Monty is emotionality and when he meets dogs he start little nervous barks. Monty is a favourite..its that sparkle in his eye despite all; its that skip in his step regardless. Hurrah Monty you'll soon be on your way!

Monty in repose...what a clown. Adoreable chap who started taunting with the dogs behind bars then after he had finished his parade duties and all was in order he went to meet the chaps behind bars and have a little chat about their welfare and check their boots! Just to jolly up their spirits what!

I met Monty today and he is just as lovely as his pictures show. But he has had some kind of skin problem so is off to the vets for a once over. Such a lovely nature though - you just wouldn't know he was suffering. Off his food this morning but that didn't stop him demolishing Lynne's lunch

Lordy Monty what is going on with you. Alyson mentioned that he had developed a 'cauliflower ear' and needed vet care. When we began to exam him we were shocked. He has leisons all over his body, legs, undercarriage. His left ear is vastly thickened and swollen closed. YET! he isn't scratching or nibbling and hence the staff hadn't picked it up..on close examination all have been . So flew off to the vets who examed his lesions under an ultraviolet light (?) and then began talking tests and lab cultures. Asking if they could offer a rescue rate; it was a possibility but when asked what a guessimate bill for the 'investigations', which was including light anaethetic, we were told £150 then proceed with advised treatment (When Christmas?!). All seemed very slow for the situation Monty and Alyson's staff faced i.e. possibily highly contagious condition e.g. rampant ring worm.
A degree of urgency filled my brain! We took the antibiotics and jumped in the car and I was on the phone to our vets Wendy... 'Yes bring him now we'll fit you in to a full surgery ?do you think he will allow me to clean his ear out without GA "Yes" I said knowing the sweetheart riding in the back of the car.
Arrived at our Twickenham vets and was ushered in next consultation. What a difference. Immediately examining the ear, cleaning it out, in with the canura, then iodined the outer crust 'ouch' the ear became red raw..1/3 of it. Not a WHIMPER. (Well YES from ME I did whimper a lot!)
On to the skin ohh ahhh oh dear not sure...On with the stronghold to hit possible mites for sarcoptic mange; prescription for Malaseb baths daily; injection of steriod to lessen reaction; agreed with antibiotics already received; sample slipped into a container to test for ringworm results should be back Friday or Saturday. Lots of treats and Monty came out smiling, as ever, but on the road to achieving as fast a recovery as can be hoped for. Now you see why we LOVE our vets! Could charge us £300 and I'm happier..in fact entire bill was ...drum roll £57
Lovely walk by the river then delivered back into Alyson 8pm that night ready for a hearty meal. _________________ You can't train the terrier out of a terrier!
