When I say I have an idea my husband usually says "Uh Oh"!  I would very much welcome everyones feedback on this one.

There is nothing that upsets me more than knowing there are dogs sitting in the pound, thinking they are waiting for a nice home, wagging their tails at everyone that walks by, and then someone comes along and writes P.T.S (Put To Sleep) on their notes and seals their fate - something Lynne sees often I am sure.

I believe that it costs approx £220 for a kennel at reduced rescue rates for a month.  I thought we could set up "The Reprieve Club" where a group of say 11 - 15 people set-up an ongoing direct debit for between £10-£20 per month and we take a kennel permanently and guarantee a place for a dog from the pound on "death row" - we might even be able to squeeze two into one kennel if they were small.  Lynne could select  what she thinks would be the most easily homeable. Everytime that dog got homed or fostered, Lynne could go back to the pound and select another P.T.S dog for our dedicated kennel.  £10-£20 is the cost of a couple of packets of ciggies / a couple of good bottles of wine.  I'd gladly give that up knowing that I really was personally saving the lives of dogs that have been condemned.

"The Reprieve Club" could have it's own page on the RR forum and everyone would be able to following the progress of the inmates.  It would be very rewarding to see at the end of the year how many dogs passing through had been saved by this small group of people.  Those people would have been personally responsible for making that happen - making a difference.  Unlike most charity donations you would know exactly where your money was going.

Are there any members out there that would be prepared to commit to this idea?  £10-20 was just a suggested figure - £5 a month (£1.25 a week - not much more that a lottery ticket) and a few more of us would do it too.

P.T.S. could take on a new meaning for an RR dog ... from "Pound To Sanctuary".

Please let me have all your thoughts/feedback.

Thanks
Sharon

The excellence of Rescue Remedies (for me) is that many of the dogs who are re-homed dogs never go into kennels. I'm certain that being with his foster Mum, Helen, is the reason Ronnie has turned out so well, whereas our first Rescue Terrier (from Wood Green) came with behavioural problems caused by the kenneling.

Having said that, I'd happily contribute £5 a month to save those who would normally have gone to Lynne. If RR could be managed as a charity, every £1 donated could also earn tax back for RR from the government.

I really do hear where you are coming from, fostering has to be the best way to go for the benefit of the dog.  I know kennelling is not ideal, but there are also many dogs that are not adversely affected by it and isn't it worth giving them a chance, particularly if Lynne identifies a dog that has the right personality/characteristics with a very strong chance of being rehomed quickly?  That dog might then only be in "The Reprieve Club" kennel for a short time until a fosterer became available.  It would give them that halfway house?

Totally agree with you and I'm more than willing  to a regular amount each month. I'm more concerned that, at the moment, every donation isn't earning all that it might.  I'd be a lot happier if it could earn some of the tax the government 'stole' from me when they ended the 10p tax band.

You are not wrong there either.  Thanks for your support and welcome to "The Reprieve Club".  Very Happy

Loving the idea Smile

Although careful not to earmark all of the money already - a big chunk is still needed to vets bills food etc.....!

Yeah you are right and we may need to pay a bit more for a permanent kennel in July & August.  But let's see how many of us think this is a good idea, would definitely like to do it and how much they can spare - it could be achievable.  It's definitely something I would like to be a part of - help me sleep a little better at night  Very Happy
