Hi
I have recently joined your forum after rescuing a patterdale Terrier x from the RSPCA.. his name is Ben and he's 5 yrs old...I suspect he maybe crossed with a Parson's jack Russell due to his coat... but not sure.

I took Ben on after finding living without a dog depressing and totally impossible for my sanity... I lost my beloved little Scraggy-dog (Yorkshire terrier) in Oct 2008 after over 16 wonderful years.  I was hoping to rehome more than 1 dog ...

Ben is proving a real handful!  Ben's previous owners had left Ben at the RSPCA telling them he was good with dogs, cats and children over 2 ... I don't think it could be futher from the truth!!  After a consultation with a behaviourist and a trip to the vets (to rule out underlying issues) we were told he has 'nervous aggression'... he has managed to bite me twice and my poor Hubby 6 or 7 times but only after getting himself into a worked up frenzy (i.e seeing another dog, cat, cyclist etc).  We are following the behaviourist recommendations (avoiding dogs by walking in the opposite direction, taking total control in the home etc).  The plus points are he's a cute as a button and reasonably good in the home (not at all aggressive and easy to train) with just separation anxiety issues...

Just wondered if this was 'normal' settling behaviour for rescued Patterdales .... if anyone has experience of nervous aggression .... I am keen to try and get him socialized but know I have to take it really easy with him...

Thanks

Teresa & Benny-Boy

Hello and welcome.

You have certainly come to the right place. We may come at these problems from a different angle to the behaviourists!! LOL

We do run Terrier Rescue and i think would be excellent for you to go and have a look at the tips and info on there.

Lynne very Terrier experienced and has such a love and understanding of the terrier breeds.

Thanks for the 'welcome' and the links (Dee  Very Happy )... I'm sure Ben and I will be with you all for a long time!  Just feel bad that his issues currently prevent me from rehoming another poor unfortunate! crybaby

I certainly don't think that you should feel bad for saving just one dog at the moment!  Just think how it would have worked our for the lovely Ben if he had not be taken in by someone willing to put in the time and effort needed to help him to overcome his current issues. If the time comes when he can cope with a companion there will be plenty of dogs out there dreaming of joining a caring home like yours.
I can say from experience that the team at RR know their terriers!  I hope their top tips come in handy.
Best wishes to Ben for the future!
