I thought I'd say a quick hello to everyone after having a good read through the forums, with a much needed cup of tea  Smile

My name is Sarah and I live in Farnborough, with my boyfriend Chris, our housemate Dave, an African Grey called Tommy and Our cat (who thinks he's a dog) Seth.

We foster for the Cats Protection League, so usually have another cat running around as well.

Both myself and Chris grew up with dogs. Unfortunately, due to living in rented accomodation, neither of us have been able to have a dog for a number of years. Last year we were finally able to buy our own house and are now longing to offer a home to a furry friend. Unfortunately, this is proving difficult as we all work full-time, making us unsuitable for any dog in the eyes of most rescues.

Our house-mate Dave is a cat person and has never lived with a dog, but has just bought himself a dummies guide to dogs -  detailing different breeds and their traits along with basic training techniques etc. I thought it was really nice of him to make the effort  Very Happy

I've volunteered to help do dog walking on Sat/Sundays as and when I'm needed - Just so I can get a doggy fix.

I'm definately a German Shepherd girl at heart. I grew up with them and had a pair of them bumping me about when I was learning to crawl and sniffing the nappy that I'd just soiled. Over the years they passed on and others who needed a home took their place. Some of my fondest memories are of all those dogs...
letting me cover them in toilet roll bandages
putting their leads on and sitting in an up-turned bench trying to get them to pull me along
not leaving my side when playing in the garden
waiting for me at the garden gate every day after school
licking the tears off my face when I'd just been dumped
sleeping on my bed when my parents went out and left me on my own for the first time

Sarah

After re-reading what I hastily wrote one lunch-time, I just wanted to clarify that my comment about most rescues seeing us as being unsuitable to care for a dog, was not aimed at Rescue Remedies in the slightest.

We have been trying to find a dog who suits our circumstances for quite a while now. When we approched a certain rescue for an initial assessment interview, the interviewer could have put it better that we would be unlikely to find a suitable dog through them. It made me a touch on the bitter side. Then, when trying other rescues we found some of them won't consider you for any dog, if you work full time.

Now don't get me wrong - I do understand that there are dogs who do have separation issues and absolutely they do need that human contact otherwise you end up with an awful situation.  But, by the same token there must be dogs out there who'd like nothing better than to curl up on a sofa/bed for the majority of the working day Smile

Hi Sarah - a very big welcome to our pack!

I didn't think for a minute that you were referring to RR Very Happy I am living proof that working dog owners exist, having 3 RR dogs and working myself.  With the right level of commitment, lifestyle changes and of course the right dog it is perfectly doable.  Just might take a little time to find the right dog.  But you are in the right place to do so  Wink

Happy searching  Very Happy
