Homed Homing Requirement: Dewi (Pronounced Dawii) needs a quieter household as he isn't used the bustles of a busy household. He needs to be an only pet with no visiting pets. Needs a secure garden and to be introduced to a new environment and expectations.
His Story: Dewi has been loved and cared for all his life. He has a vaccination record since a pup, neutered, flea treated and wormed regularly. Only illness was a cut paw as a puppy and a hornet sting 6 weeks ago (patch on his side in the first pictures). One of his owners died a year ago and now his remaining owner is seriously ill in a hospice. Alyson, a friend bought him home but he hasn’t settled living with her Labrador and Husky. Alyson spent 3 days on the phone asking for help, over 50 calls, willing to drive him anywhere. We were the only ones who stopped to listen. Now booster vax, chipped and neutered.
Advert: Dewi is a lovely boy who obeys the following commands: give kisses, sit, roll over, give paw, high five, beg, fetch, drop, leave, come here, lie down, go to bed and when you open the back door at night tell him 'go and wee wee' and off he goes. He has always been told "woof woof watch house" when left for quite a few hours a day, never mess or damage.
Dewi is a rare tricolour CollieX with a white star. He could have terrier or Staffie mix - a true crossbreed. He is good with children, loves to play fetch and is loving to them though never lived with them. He walks well on a lead and meets dogs well outside but is not really interested. Dewi is a very loving and obedient dog. Only pet in his home. Beautiful boy who meant everything to his owners and will to his new owners too!

Dewi has come into our heart. People that are new in Rescue Remedies won't know that I have a deep love for Collies and Lurchers as I always had one or two in our house before we used kennels. On meeting dear Dewi I immediately recognised Mr Dewi is a Collie x Staffie just like our dear Hughie. Dewi has the sensitivity of the Collie, the intelligence and trainability, the body size and Collie shaped head with of course the Staffie influence. He has the tri colouring also of Welsh Collie. He also has the common Collie trait of sensitivity around approaching his collar. At the moment, really since his owner left to go into hospice Dewi is 'lost'. Alyson offered him a bridge through into life beyond his cosy home and loving previous owners. Today Dewi came into rescue and was completely swamped by the new impressions, faces and car journey. There was fear there in him and this will be evident for a time to come as he learns to trust and adjust to the new raw experiences he is being exposed to. You will see in the pictures below the fear in his posture and in his eyes. Believe me had Alyson taken him to the pound as she was nearly forced to do, he would have been put to sleep, as he needs to be gently approached, handled and given time with a great deal of reassurance. However actually his fear is more about exposure to dogs but this can put up a barrier to the stranger/person in his presence also. Kennels isn't the place for Dewi but he will adjust. Lets hope it will be soon. Here is Dewi having a walk in Swindon where we met, he didn't pee or lay a parcel..too nervous.
The second dog ever (first being Twiggy) who was too nerve-racked to travel next to me in the car and immediately went into the floor well which would have interfered with the accelerator and brake pedal sweetheart! ..So he went into the enclosed crate in the back which is a shame as I use my journeys to befriend our dogs. Made the mistake of taking his lead off and could not get him to come out on arrival at the kennels. He was so aware of the dogs barking in the kennels and actually was having an on going conversation with one of them and really scared of me approaching him (I am better here thank you). I had to close the gate, lift the carrier out with him in it, and try to coax him out. Eventually got Dewi to come out, only for him to run into the foot well. We then were playing hide and seek, passenger seat to drivers seat; passenger seat to drivers seat. 40 minutes later and I managed to win his trust and use distraction to click a lead on and he immediately came like a lamb. I had hoped I could have used his word commands but in this situation nerves got the better of him.
A couple of pictures of him in the paddock just to prove we made it, with it getting dark
Dewi actually walked well up the corridor passed the dogs. I made a point of going into his kennel twice after and he greeted me like a long lost friend. Found out he is not microchipped so will sort that in the next few days as a matter of urgency..crucial for a nervous dog to be chipped as they can slip their lead or suddenly pull the lead out of your hand and thats it. Dewi has our disc on now. Alyson wormed and flea treated him yesterday. Will get a harness on him and leave it on for easy of management tomorrow. Sweet dreams Dewi new day tomorrow then you begin to meet lots of new friends. _________________ You can't train the terrier out of a terrier..they are their own persons!
Dewy stayed safely at the back of his kennel today and then, when he had access, his bed. I meant to take some chicken with me but forgot and neither my 2nd grade dog biscuits nor tinned food were good enough treats to tempt him to come say hi. I sat the other side of the hatch but he wasn't upto moving anything other than a nosy peek with his head. After some time I realised the let them come to you wasn't going to work with Dewy.
So I went round to the front of the kennel where his bed is, looped a lead over his wary head then he happily followed me through the hatch (bet he thought I was mad) where he was wary the first time the harness went over his head but happy when I put it on the right way the 2nd time. Leads on properly and off we went without a murmur at the other dogs. By now Smiler was nearly back from his walk so we merely passed them without a worry and had a nice walk he had the longest pee and the decided to 'go' in the middle of crossing the road
. Back in the kennel I left his harness on, we played ball for a little while then I left him. He's feeling rather insecure but hopefully he'll settle, really lovely boy with an extra disc on that says 'spoilt'!
Dewy is still feeling rather vulnerable but came forward to me in his kennel for some sausage before retreating, I then tried a 'Barbara Woodhouse' voice 'Walkies' (wonder how many are old enough to remember her!) while showing him the lead and bless him he crawled to me on his belly. Once the lead is on he's happy and ready to go so I introduced him to Anne and they got acquainted waiting for me and enry to get ready.
Dewy is settling and wanting to come out for walkies now. New walker Lauren walked him today and I do think he's beginning to enjoy his walks and might even be getting used to our strange accent.
It didn't take him long to realise that he could trust me - he happily took my liver cake and was quite happy for me to put the lead on his harness and then his collar
I wanted to make sure that all the dogs got out of the kennels yesterday so some got a shorter walk than others, Dewi was one of those, so i put him on the extending lead. He was bounding along in the field, sniffing etc and seemed to have a lovely time.
Dewi is a credit to his previous owner - he just looks a bit bemused to be in kennels now (understandably) - he will make a lovely addition to someones family as he is such a sweet boy , and a well behaved one at that
Dewi is a little dream of a dog. No problem, no pulling and to me just looks like a little mix of a dog. He is ready for his next home and would slip into a family with no probs

I have seenDewi come in frightened and nervous when he was first in the kennels but now he has settled really well and he is a little gem. We have a lovely walk yesterday and I got loads of kissess andhe walks very well on the lead and doesn't bother with the other dogs at all. He deserves to be back in a loving home environment which he sadly lost through no fault of his own and once there, he will seem like he has always belonged
Dewi has found his feet and knows the routine. He almost puts his harness on himself pushing his head through it before you have even realised. He loves going out walking with his RR friends and is a happy, relaxed dog ready made for a new home.
