This is Clive (aka Bruiser).

He is a Chihuahua x Jack Russell of about 9 months old who came to us from a home who had bred the parents (pure Chuhuahua mum and Chihuahua x Jack Russell dad) thinking that they could make lots of money off the puppies.
Reality is harsh though and sadly that wasn't the case. Sad

The whole litter became another statistic in the unwanted dog population.

The woman of the household had mental problems and decided that she wanted to keep all of the puppies and the parents. The dogs never went out of the house or garden and when she finally made the decision to rehome the puppies they were only happy if in their environment.

Unfortunately the woman was married to a man who was very harsh with the dogs and one roar from him would send them running to hide in the flowerbeds. He also lost his temper with them frequently if they got in his way and smacked and kicked them if they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. If they barked whilst he was in the garden then he would turn the hose on them and so as you can imagine the puppies have turned out to be very neurotic.

When Clive arrived last night he was very scared, visibly shaking with fear and growling in fear at any person. These puppies have not seen another person other than the couple who had them and their carer.
They have never had a collar and lead on and only know their 'pack'.

This morning he was a bit more cheerful and let me pick him up with his soft blanket and as you can see by the pics, once that initial part of being lifted up by someone new is over, then he is quite happy to sit and have a cuddle.
We are still working hard with boosting his confidence levels with new people and he is still very unsure what my motives are! But it has been less than 24 hours.

Clive will be neutered, vaxed and chipped prior to rehoming.

He is good with cats and other dogs and would suit a quiet home with no children. Over 16's only please!

An experienced home is essential and one that is happy to allow him to come round in his own time.

Things are going ok here with Clive.
We did have another addition yesterday in the form of Clive's brother, Midge!
He was due to go to a different rescue, but due to him taking a nip at someone it was decided that he needed to go to a rescue who had more time and patience and no time limit.

Midge is smaller and was supposed to be the more confident out of the two, but Clive seems to have overtaken that idea and is happy to wander around and about us and the other dogs and Midge is happiest upstairs out of the way. This is fine and he can come round in his own time.

However, every day he has to have some form of interaction and here are the results...

This evening Clive's confidence grew thanks to a certain Pomeranian getting all the fuss and due to jealousy decided that Emma possibly wasn't quite so scary as originally thought...

What a result Emma ! You certainly have worked wonders already . This is so pleasing to see.

Both boys are booked in for Tuesday to be castrated, vaxed and chipped on Tuesday.

Work is slow with Midge because Clive is so jealous! Everytime I go near to Midge then Clive leaps on him and starts to hump him. I have also noticed that at night time when he thinks nobody is looking then he will grab hold of Midge and drag him about. If Midge tries to creep into my room quietly then Clive will run up to him, hold onto him and hump him. He doesn't do this if he stays outside the bedroom door. It is very annoying!

Now that Clive is confident around me I have started to discipline him as he is getting way too big for his boots. Before he got away with alot because I was waiting for his character to come out, but now he is learning boundaries, commands and what is acceptable and what isn't. He takes it all in his stride and shows no malice if he is told off.

He is more Jack Russell than his brother. He is far more confident and cheeky and likes to investigate everything, whereas Midge is the one who is a typical handbag dog. I insist on Midge sitting on my lap for at least half an hour and this has worked. He started off as a shaky and very scaredy boy, but now he will actually fall asleep on my lap. As soon as he is placed on the floor he runs upstairs, but more because Clive chases him up there. Neutral

However, when I am working upstairs he is happy to come and say hello and wander about and check out what I am doing.

As soon as those vaxs are done then the boys will start coming to work with me as by then it will be way overdue for them to experience life outside of a house and garden!

Two bits of good news today. Smile

Firstly we have progressed so well with Midge! He still demands to be carried downstairs Rolling Eyes

but he can just be scooped up now and carried about with no blanket needed. He happily sleeps on the bed (of course!) and is an affectionate and loving boy.
Both are eating well now.

The second bit of good news is that Midge is now reserved to go to a new home post castration. Smile

The ops are done...they are vaxed, chipped and snipped...time for some socialising!

The boys came to work with me today and this is the first time that they have been able to run free round a big field and be able to explore an interesting environment and start to learn the routine of being a Furry Friends dog.

They have met Rolo the Springer Spaniel properly now. So far Rolo has been most put out about having two young whipper-snappers around. Not least because they have goaded him into reaction! Clive is a little wind up merchant, but how surprised were the pups when suddenly Rolo was THERE with no Emma to hide behind! As it goes Rolo was a good boy and pretty much ignored them.
Rachel's dog Stan couldn't really be bothered with them and Lucy (recently returned Staffie cross currently living with Rachel and Stan) felt the need to protect her old friend Annie (my Yorkie cross) when Clive became a little too friendly and started to hump her. Annie told him off, Lucy made Clive realise that really was not acceptable behaviour by telling him off good and proper. Clive behaved after that. Smile

Both boys met all the staff and were fairly well behaved. There was no silly behaviour from either of them and they happily trotted past everyone with no rushing about or panicking which I was expecting.

All in all a good day and both boys are very tired now and ready for their bed. Smile
