Buddy will always be our Buddy.
Sadly his nerves unsettled him in moments, we thought we could judge, but those nerves ran deep in places even he could not understand. Today we said goodbye to those nerves. Our dialogue with him is now based on trust. The currency of our deep and lasting friendship with Our best Buddy is the gift of loving kindness.
Buddy's thread below:we have such wonderful memories of him
Homing Requirements: Buddy needs terrier experienced home, he so needs confidence behind him. No young children. Wary of visitors/ new people but will build trust but can bite if pushed too quickly. Only pet environment.
His Story: Buddy grew up in a tweeny family, but they were busy and following a separation it was clear Buddy had his own needs. Buddy is chipped, neutered and vax'd.
Advert: Buddy is a tri-colour; broken to wire coated 'Jack'; a real head turner. Born in 4th of July! 04. He has found himself in rescue due to a marriage break up. His family weren't confident around dogs generally and tended to restrict his socialisation should his terrier ways came to the fore i.e. visitors. Buddy was also kept away from dogs outside but has socialised well in dogs company when gently introduced. In fact his confidence has gone from strength to strength. He now meets dogs well though may occasionally grumble under his breath.
Terriers; you love their character and work with it or shy away. We are delighted to have this little man with us. Terrier people have a sense of humour and lack "the blame consciousness"..lots of forgiveness and less analysis goes along way. 'OK so you don't like that my lad, we'll manage it slightly different next time..come on lets have a walk!' So Buddy is looking for a terrier experienced owner who lightens his concerns. Its like he grew up leading his nervous family. An owner that understands Buddy so wants to have fun; so wants to love and trust, but is a little wary until trust in developed..no worries lets play!

Buddy came into our kennels on the 14th October. He had a great 2 days in foster but bit his fosterer who had just met him and in Buddy's eyes being a little too intimate attempting to removed his harness after a lovely walk together. Buddy obviously was more nervous than his body language was displaying. His fosterers were very understanding but felt a little out of their depth as new information handed over on surrender of Buddy was that he had to be muzzled when visitors entered the house or kept away. Also he had seldom been walked. Buddy needs an experienced family who can build his trust within familar and progress to less familiar.
When I met Buddy his was standing shaking at the back of the kennel with a full bowl of food standing untouched at the front. He came towards me on entry and attuned to my conversation with him readily. Sure he would love to go for a walk! Had no difficulty putting a lead onto his harness..no overt wariness on his part and off we went. Had a lovely walk over the fields and I was able to stroke his back gently by the time we returned. I wasn't intrusive or in anyway 'testing' him just enjoying each others company relaxing in the sunshine. He met Sue kennel owner on return and put his paws on her knees and she 'gently put out her hand for him to smell and "t'was a very pleasant encounter".
Buddy is what we would call an intermediate Jack..his legs are midlength between short Jack and long Parson's Jack '. He has wonderful colouring with a slightly broken coat giving him a whiskerty beard _________________ You can't train the terrier out of a terrier..they are their own persons!
have just walked Buddy. Possibly he is finding kennels sufficiently daunting that it is keeping him quieter than he would normally be.
He walked nicely on the extender, happy to sniff but not desperate to hunt the hedgerows. He ignored the sheep and recalled nicely on the extender. He was unreactive to the dogs in the kennels (and it got very noisy at times). Not interested in food, but happy to go for a walk. doesn't react to traffic. Initially wary (but not hostile) about being touched he was quite happy after a minute or two to be touched. His harness was twisted, and after putting the lead on his collar, so I wouldn't have to chase him if he moved away or grab him , I undid it and adjusted it.
When he is unsure he becomes very still, but if you are looking for it, it is easy to give him a second or two, speak reassuringly and go on with what you are doing.
I thought he was the easiest walk of the day.
Had a nice little potter with Buddy. He walked very well agin, is more interested in treats. He got a bit overexcited and started to grab the lead, but stopped when told No firmly.
Julie took Buddy for a training session today. He was very good and has obviously received good basic commands. He enjoyed it but in the paddock he was determined to get to the dogs! _________________ You can't train the terrier out of a terrier..they are their own persons!
Little Buddy moved kennels today as we are grouping our terriers together. He had a fun ride in the car ending up on my lap. I was part assessing him re. his acceptance of touch. He was very tolerant and I stroked him and touched him generally without concern in fact he seemed happy to experience cuddles. I took him for a walk on arrival yes it was getting dark but less dark than the photos suggest. It helps to have a dog that glows in the dark...must be his halo!
I then removed his harness with respect and no trouble. I decided I would put a muzzle on him to change his collar as I knew there would be a lot of size adaption with on and off adjustments. I wanted him to be free of his harness which he was worn continually for 2 weeks. I also wanted a broader clean collar with a good 'D' ring on it for ease for vol. dog walkers to attach a lead; the kennel staff use slip leads. No problems or indication he would have bitten.
Lovely terrier but does need to get more used to firm confident touch as his can physically jump when you do make contact. _________________ You can't train the terrier out of a terrier..they are their own persons!
Buddy was great to walk today. When we set off, he kept looking up at me as if to say 'is it ok to carry on?' and when I chatted away to him he relaxed and was fine. I stroked him loads of times and he seemed to enjoy it.
We met a border terrier and they got on really well. I chatted with the owner for a while and when we left, the border terrier came back to Buddy for another sniff.
He was such an easy JRT to walk and such a handsome boy too
Walked Buddy today. HE was very good, initially grabbing the lead, but stopping when told to. He trotted along very amicably, periodically touching my lead, and then when I stopped putting his feet on my knees so I could give him a good scratch. As he finds going back up the corridor quite stressful, I tucked him under one arm, and he behaved impeccably, staying calm and seeming to enjoy the cuddle.
Buddy has a lovely walk and then jumped in the car and off we went to kennels anew. _________________ You can't train the terrier out of a terrier..they are their own persons!
I walked Buddy for a short while today, but he put the brakes on when we got to the woods and didn't want to go any further. I think he must have been scared by the army training noise, so we walked up and down the drive to the kennels instead and I gave him lots of treats and cuddles and left him with a kong in his kennel.
He seems to be a bit quiet, nervous and lacking in confidence - everything's changed for him lately so he's bound to be a bit unsure. I will spend more time with him tomorrow and hopefully we can stay out a bit longer.
He's such a lovely boy - looking forward to getting to know him better.
Buddy loves to play! Karen and I played with him for a while in the paddock this morning as we thought the rain would be too heavy to take him out for a walk. He was a bit keen to have a closer look at Mac though (they are in neighbouring kennels and Mac constantly bounces up and down to have a look at Buddy!)
The rain subsided and I took Buddy out into the woods - he was reluctant to go further than the drive yesterday, but no such thing today. He was very easy to walk, constantly looking back to check up on me, came to me when called and was a real pleasure to be with. I did notice once when he came back for a treat that he cowered when I was holding out the treat, so I waited until he stopped cowering before giving it to him. I still think that this little guy lacks a bit of confidence.
When we got back to the kennel, he put both paws on my knee while I rubbed him dry
We took buddy out today, at first he was very nervous and kept sitting down then trying to go back to the kennels but with some persuasion and being made a fuss of he was happily running along but always looking round for reassurance. He's a really sweet dog and very cute too, he enjoyed the drying off to and had a little play with his ball back at the kennel, bless him!
Buddy was desperate to get out for his walk today and was really excited when I went to get him. He was jumping up and down a lot and grabbed the lead a few times - he let go when told to though.
After he'd settled down, Buddy was very easy to walk. He doesn't dash off or weave from side to side and constantly looks back to check you're still there. He responds very well to praise and always comes back for treats, so he should be quite easy to train. He does snatch treats however, so we worked on 'gentle' today and by the end of the walk, he was much better - not perfect by any means, but he learns quickly.
Buddy still seems to be quite nervous and would really benefit from some training, boundaries and routine. He is really keen to please and would like a home soon, please
